Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reform in Sunday School Teaching The present book is based on nine articles contributed to The Primitive Methodist Leader in the latter part of 1905. In acceding to a desire expressed by many that they should be issued in a more permanent form, I have taken the opportunity not simply to revise but considerably to expand them. Criticisms have been examined and misunderstandings removed by re-statement. Several points have received a fuller development. Special mention may be made of the stress laid on the fact that revelation is a process in history as settling for us the lines on which the study of the Bible may be most successfully pursued. I have also sketched briefly the theology of the leading prophets and of Paul, to help such teachers as are unfamiliar with the subject to see how it may most profitably be taught. A religious journal has warned its readers against attaching undue importance to my views on Sunday School Reform for the reason that "it is confessedly difficult for theological professors and educationalists to realise the actual conditions and needs, as well as the limitations, of Sunday School work." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sunday School Teacher The purpose of this book is not strictly pedagogical, but relates rather to the practical work to the Sunday school teacher. Severely trained in the vocation of the secular teacher, afterwards called for many years to the work of a Sunday school specialist, the writer has noted that most of our Sunday school teachers have little time or Inclination for a study of the science of teaching. As busy week day workers in home and office, store and farm, their limitations are such that they cannot hope to compete in pedagogic equipment with those whose life work is to teach. Nor should it be expected of them, in view of the wide differences between the secular and the Sunday school teacher. What the latter needs and covets is the art rather than the science of teaching. This need has been kept steadily in mind in the preparation of this little book, which is the outgrowth of fellowship with hosts of Sunday school teachers whose sincere ambition is to teach skillfully the Holy Scriptures. That it may prove helpful to these faithful servants of the Church is my earnest prayer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Sunday School in Principle and Practice The Sunday school no ilongei' lies among the negs ligible factors of life. Men and women do well to study its history and its present activities, not alone because such study is prescribed as part of the preparation for service in the institution, but be cause the school has become one of the most im portant forces in modern affairs, and particularly because to this school we must look, at least in large measure, for the solution of our great problem Of religious education. It occupies a pro-eminent place as a character-forming institution in an age which is slowly coming to recognise the supreme place of character and the regnancy of righteous ness. It owes its place to two causes, the force of necessity on the one hand, and the fact that it is fitting itself to meet that necessity on the other. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of the Sunday School The primary aim of this book is to study the development of the Sunday-school with a View to determining whether or not it will be able to meet the serious and steadily increasing demands of the present age. Its past development reveals its capacity for progressive adaptation. We look back that we may the better go forward. We View the past that we may appreciate the present. We see in the sacrifices that our fathers have made for the progress of the school the call to make its continued progress certain. Over a century and a quarter Of definite progress in the Sunday - school demands that none of the effort Of the past shall be lost, that returns shall come from all the life investment Of the fathers and Old-time teachers, and to see to it that when the story of this present transitional era shall be written it may be worth the telling. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sunday-School Teacher and the Program of Jesus The following pages have been prepared both for reading and study by Sunday-school teachers and officers. It is hoped that the suggested topics for discussion and the bibliographies appended to the chapters will render the book useful in teacher-training groups. The necessity and value of teacher training is now recognized. One part of the teacher's training needs greater emphasis. This the authors have attempted to supply. It is their hope that many Sunday-school teachers in reading this book will gain a new conception of the teacher's responsibility, and will see more clearly than before the relation of their work to the supreme task of the Christian Church. The authors have collaborated in the entire work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reformation of the Sunday School Books like this need to be published, and ought to be circulated and read. Even where we do not accept every position, anything is better than stagnation; and it is quite clear that no time should be lost in making bur Sunday Schools more efficient, and more able to bear the strong light which is being turned on them. They will have to count much more even than they have done, as the centres of the religious training of our young people; and this can only be by the exercise of sanctified common sense. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Work of the Sunday-School: A Manual for Teachers No apology is needed for sending forth another book concerning the work of that institution which is receiving the increasing attention of the Christian world, and which is doing so much for the establishment of Christ's kingdom in the earth. This little volume is an attempt to give hint, at least, as to where strategic work may be done for the ushering in of our Lord's kingdom. Most of the chapters deal with the prime factors and forces which have commanding place in shaping the destiny of the Church. This book does not pretend to touch even a majority of the important themes relative to the Sunday-school. It treats a few of the supremely significant factors. The preparation of these chapters has been a work of rare delight amid the press of a busy pastorate. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pedagogical Bible School: A Scientific Study of the Sunday School, With Chief Reference to the Curriculum It is a real pleasure for me to accede to Mr. Haslett's request that I write a word of introduction to his book. A good part of the work was done while the author was attending my seminary and taking lectures in Clark University. While I cannot say that I agree with Mr. Haslett in all points, I do believe that the spirit and method of his work mark a noteworthy advance in Sunday-school work and are emphatic protests against many abuses and antipedagogical methods now widely in use. The writer takes the standpoint of the religious and moral nature and needs of the child, has studied the Sunday-school and the literature upon it for years with great diligence and has here written a book sure to benefit all Sunday-school workers who read it. The plain precepts of common sense seem to suggest that in a large general way the order of the books in both the Old and the New Testament as they stand are genetic and pedagogic. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching Problem: A Message to Sunday School Workers The unexpectedly cordial reception accorded to The Organized Sunday School has been followed by numerous suggestions and requests that a similar message be prepared for the teacher. Hence this little book, which, while addressed especially to the teacher, is, after all, equally suggestive to the superintendent and possibly to the pastor. In its preparation it is assumed that the teacher is what he should be morally, spiritually, in habit and in life. That he should measure up to this standard is a basal principle, as is also the proposition that if he is anything else his sacred office should promptly be declared vacant. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Sunday School in Utopia: A Manual of Psychology and Method for the Sunday School Teacher This Book has grown out of the author's experience. For nearly fifteen years he has been directly connected with Religious Education, as Sunday School teacher, Superintendent, Diocesan Director of Religious Education, and Master of Method in a Church Training College for Schoolmasters. Everything that is written has been tested by experience. The title of the Book is suggested by the second part of Mr. E. Holmes' Book - What Is and What Might Be.' In view of the uncertainty of the future of Religious Education in the Day Schools, the author believes that the responsibility thrown upon the Sunday School will be greater in the future than ever before. He believes that England will be what the next generation makes it, and that the next generation will be largely what we make it. Therefore the conscientious Sunday School teacher is to-day performing one of the truest acts of National service. The Book consists of three parts. Parts I and II deal with psychology and pedagogy respectively, and Part III is a short Appendix. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Principles of Teaching as Applied to the Sunday-School One of the most hopeful signs of improvement in the work of the Sunday-school is the noticeable increase in recent years in books and pamphlets on the training of Sunday-school teachers. The scope of work which is now regarded as essential for teachers in the Sunday school has gradually enlarged. Knowledge of the Bible alone is no longer regarded as the only qualifi cation for those who instruct the youth of the church in morals and religion. Not only must they be familiar with the Scriptures, the subject-matter to be taught, but Sunday-school teachers should also be familiar with the best and most practicable principles of teach ing and with certain facts about child life and child development. A thorough knowledge of the Bible, and how to teach it, and a familiarity with pedagogy and with child psychology, are some of the needs of the teacher in the Sunday-school today. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sunday-School Teacher-Training Y day and by night it is the thought of the great host Of American Sunday-school teachers, many of whom I know and all Of whom I love, that comforts and cheers me in my work. If one can help at all to solve the problem that confronts and hinders them, it will be labor well spent. And behind these teachers now teaching is another even greater host. It is the young people of the church who are to teach and train when we are gone. What can be done for them? If teacher-training means much to the teacher at work, it means much more to the young man or woman whose life work is yet to begin.
