Lire l’introduction, c’est comprendre d’emblée que cet ouvrage n’est pas un énième commentaire sur l’islam et sa capacité, réelle ou supposée, de s’adapter au monde moderne. Razika Adnani, pour qui la réforme de l’islam n’est plus une question de choix, mais de responsabilité, s’interroge sur les obstacles qu’il faut surmonter pour concrétiser ce projet. Ainsi les musulmans doivent-ils revoir leur position au sujet des deux questions principales. Ainsi doivent-ils se libérer d’un héritage lourd de concepts qui entravent la pensée et bloquent la raison. L’importance de cet ouvrage réside dans les réponses qu’il donne aux questions posées par l’islam aujourd’hui. Razika Adnani est convaincue qu’il ne suffit plus d’affirmer « cela n’est pas l’islam »... Pour elle, il est essentiel d’interroger l’histoire de l’islam, de connaître les doctrines théologiques, les concepts et les idées. Avec un discours accessible, elle va au-delà d’une analyse historique classique et nous livre un diagnostic original de l’état de la pensée musulmane. Pour construire sa réflexion, l’auteur forge de nouveaux concepts comme islam révélé et islam construit, charia pratique, salafisme traditionnel et salafisme moderne, réforme tournée vers le passé et réforme orientée vers l’avenir. Que l’on s’intéresse ou non à la religion, ces sujets nous concernent tous. En ce sens, ce livre est indispensable. EXTRAIT En Occident et notamment en France, pour expliquer la montée du salafisme et du radicalisme islamique, la plupart des études pointent les difficultés sociales, politiques et économiques. Selon ces théories, ces difficultés ne favoriseraient pas l’intégration des Français d’origine étrangère. Concernant les musulmans, cette situation les conduirait à se réfugier dans le salafisme et le radicalisme. Cette explication se heurte à la réalité : la majorité des personnes touchées par ce phénomène vivent dans les pays musulmans où l’individu vit dans son milieu culturel et historique et n’est pas confronté au problème de l’intégration. Les problèmes socio-économiques des premières générations d’émigrés musulmans ne les ont pas empêchés de ressentir le désir de s’intégrer ou de manifester leur volonté de le faire. En 2005, elle quitte l’enseignement pour se consacrer définitivement à la réflexion et à la recherche. Book excerpt: In the last few years, the fields of Sephardic and Mizrahi Studies have grown significantly, thanks to new publications which take into consideration unexplored aspects of the history, literature and identity of modern Middle Eastern and North African Jews. However, few of these studies abandoned the Diaspora/Israel dichotomy and analysed the Jews who moved to Israel and those that settled elsewhere as part of a new, diverse and interconnected diaspora. Contemporary Sephardic and Mizrahi Literature argues that the literary texts produced by Sephardic and Mizrahi Jews who migrated from the Middle East and North Africa in the 1950s and afterwards, should be considered as part of a transnational arena, in which forms of Jewish diasporism and postcolonial displacement interweave. Through an original perspective that focuses on novelists, poets, professional and amateur writers – from the Israeli poets Erez Biton and Shva Salhoov to Francophone authors such as Chochana Boukhobza, Ami Bouganim and Serge Moati – the book explains that these Sephardic and Mizrahi authors are part of a global literary diaspora at the crossroads of past Arab legacies, new national identities and persistent feelings of Jewishness. Some of the chapters emphasise how the Sephardic and Mizrahi past and present identities are narrated, how generational and ethno-national issues are taken into account and which linguistic and stylistic strategies the authors adopted. Other chapters focus more explicitly on how the relations between national societies and different Jewish migrant communities are narrated, both in today’s Israel and in the diaspora. The book helps to bridge the gap between Hebrew and postcolonial literature, and opens up new perspectives on Sephardic and Mizrahi literature. It will be a valuable resource for students and scholars of Jewish and Postcolonial Studies and Comparative Literature

Book excerpt: This book provides a detailed analysis of the political arguments about the place of Muslims in contemporary France, and also discusses the ideas put forward by a range of Muslim thinkers. France has become the setting for one of the most important conflicts in the modern world. On the one hand, it possesses a rigidly organized, centralized state, whose bureaucrats and civil servants are animated by a code of secular activism. On the other hand, France is also the home for Europe's largest Muslim minority, variously estimated at numbering between four and six million people. This means that in terms of simple numbers, France can be counted as the world's fifteenth Islamic power. Previous conflicts with religion have left a deep impression on French political culture: from the sixteenth and seventeenth-century conflicts between Catholics and Protestants played to the formation of the collaborationist Vichy government in 1940. In recent decades, Muslims have been stigmatized as an irreconcilable minority unable to adapt to the secular culture of the majority of French citizens. This work draws out the political implications of the current conflict. It is based on events and publications produced in a single five year period, beginning with the shock of the 2002 Presidential elections, in which Le Pen was the second most successful candidate, ranging through the legislation of March 2004 which banned the Islamic headscarf from French state schools, and which sparked off a series of bad-tempered exchanges between left and right-wing French nationalists, anti-racism campaigners, secularists, anti-clericals and a variety of Muslim authors.

Située au cœur de l'Eurasie, traversée par les routes les plus anciennes, son rayonnement culturel a souvent dépassé les frontières des pays qui la composent aujourd'hui. Confronté à la "modernité" depuis environ deux siècles, le monde turco-iranien a abordé cette nouvelle étape de son histoire en empruntant des voies différentes: certains pays se sont inspirés de l'exemple occidental, d'autres ont été marqués par la colonisation russe, l'expérience soviétique voir chinoise. Paradoxalement, alors qu'une partie des pays de la région ont effectué les expériences de laïcité les plus poussées (Turquie et républiques ex-soviétiques en particulier), d'autres ont exploré la voie de l'islam politique le plus radical (Iran et Afghanistan). Dans cette perspective, ces contrées ont été en quelque sorte le laboratoire du monde musulman dans son ensemble. Cet ouvrage est issu d'un colloque organisé en novembre 2005 à l'Institut universitaire d'études du développement (IUED) de Genève en l'honneur de Mohammad-Reza Djalili.
