Book Synopsis Réflexions Stratégiques Sur Haïti by : Luc Rémy
Download or read book Réflexions Stratégiques Sur Haïti written by Luc Rémy and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Policing Public Opinion in the French Revolution by : Charles Walton
Download or read book Policing Public Opinion in the French Revolution written by Charles Walton and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-02-02 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1789 Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, French revolutionaries proclaimed the freedom of speech, religion, and opinion. Censorship was abolished, and France appeared to be on a path towards tolerance, pluralism, and civil liberties. A mere four years later, the country descended into a period of political terror, as thousands were arrested, tried, and executed for crimes of expression and opinion. In Policing Public Opinion in the French Revolution, Charles Walton traces the origins of this reversal back to the Old Regime. He shows that while early advocates of press freedom sought to abolish pre-publication censorship, the majority still firmly believed injurious speech--or calumny--constituted a crime, even treason if it undermined the honor of sovereign authority or sacred collective values, such as religion and civic spirit. With the collapse of institutions responsible for regulating honor and morality in 1789, calumny proliferated, as did obsessions with it. Drawing on wide-ranging sources, from National Assembly debates to local police archives, Walton shows how struggles to set legal and moral limits on free speech led to the radicalization of politics, and eventually to the brutal liquidation of "calumniators" and fanatical efforts to rebuild society's moral foundation during the Terror of 1793-1794. With its emphasis on how revolutionaries drew upon cultural and political legacies of the Old Regime, this study sheds new light on the origins of the Terror and the French Revolution, as well as the history of free expression.
Book Synopsis The Newspaper Press in the French Revolution by : Hugh Gough
Download or read book The Newspaper Press in the French Revolution written by Hugh Gough and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-10 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the ancien régime collapsed during the summer of 1789 the newspaper press was free for the first time in French history. The result was an explosion in the number of newspapers with over 2,000 titles appearing between 1789 and 1799. This study, originally published in 1988, traces the growth of the French Press during this time, showing the importance of the emergence of provincial newspapers, and examining the relationship of journalism with political power. Concluding chapters discuss the economics of newspapers during the decade, analysing the machinery of printing, distribution and sales.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third volume in a much praised series on The French Revolution and the Creation of Modern Political Culture examines the way in which the Revolution has been portrayed in European thought and its impact upon the development of political philosophy in the nineteenth century. Opening with the influence of Burke and other contemporaries of the Revolution and the ensuing debate over the question "Why the Terror?", this volume explores such diverse themes as the legacy of the Revolution on the political and social evolution of Germany, England, Italy and Russia; the crisis it brought about in the Catholic Church; and the difficulties encountered in determining the end of the Revolution. By showing that the upheaval in European politics and philosophy caused by the French Revolution continued to shape nations, peoples and thought, the texts brought together in this volume permit a better understanding of the event's extraordinary complexity.

Book Synopsis Publishing and Cultural Politics in Revolutionary Paris, 1789-1810 by : Carla Hesse
Download or read book Publishing and Cultural Politics in Revolutionary Paris, 1789-1810 written by Carla Hesse and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024-03-29 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1789, French revolutionaries initiated a cultural experiment that radically transformed the three basic elements of French literary civilization—authorship, printing, and publishing. In a panoramic analysis, Carla Hesse tells how the Revolution shook the Parisian printing and publishing world from top to bottom, liberating the trade from absolutist institutions and inaugurating a free-market exchange of ideas. Historians and literary critics have traditionally viewed the French Revolution as a catastrophe for French literary culture. Combing through extensive archival sources, Hesse finds instead that revolutionaries intentionally dismantled the elite literary civilization of the Old Regime to create unprecedented access to the printed word. Exploring the uncharted terrains of popular fiction, authors' rights, and literary life under the Terror, Hesse offers a new perspective on the relationship between democratic revolutions and modern cultural life.
