Robert Edmond Jones's innovations in set design and lighting brought new ideas to the stage, but it is greater understanding of design - its role at the heart of theater - that has continued to inspire theater students. The volume includes "A New Kind of Drama," "To a Young Stage Designer" and six other of Jones's "reflections."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Reflections on the Art of Acting” is a small book — a tiny book. It makes a singular and clear point about acting that hasn't been well articulated in the history of writing about acting. I describe, define, and delineate “the double”. The actor — the character.“Reflections on Acting” is a mini-memoir as I use a few stories from my life in the theater to illustrate my conviction that acting is a rare art — even as it is ubiquitous as advertising, entertainment, and diversion. I write to argue to my readers, both in the theater and outside, that we can live deliberately and improvisationally at the same time. Paradox is the center of the art of acting. In “Reflections on the Art of Acting” I use the Tao Te Ching as a goad to my thinking. The poetry of the Tao Te Ching allows me to write in a slightly elevated way, every now and then. This book is small , but it is highly concentrated.I was hugely affected by Eugen Herrigal's Zen in the Art of Archery. Joe Chaikin's The Presence of the Actor has inspired me to think about what I do and what I teach.Obviously this little book has to be presented as an art object. It should appeal to a much wider audience than theater teachers, students, and professionals. Setting my writing against the Tao Te Ching has allowed me to articulate artistic ideals in the training and practice of acting. I have also given non-actors some keys to creative concentration. I hope to inspire my readers to the notion that an examined life might do without judgment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Talma on the Actor's Art No one an read Talma's subtle yet simple description of the qualities and the course of study essential to the actor, without a conviction that acting is one of the most fascinating of the arts. To the actor the whole field of human nature is Open. Whether in the ideal world of the stage or in the actual world of social intercourse, hismind is continually accumulating impressions Which become a part of his artistic being. This experience is common to the students of 'other arts, 'ibut the actor has this advantage, that all he learns is embodied in his own personality, not translated through some medium, like the painter's canvas or the novelist's page. At the same time, this purely personal art is subjected to the most severe tests. It is easier to detect a aw in an actor's impersonation than an improbability in a book. The man enacts the character before many - a false intonation jars immediately upon the ear, an unnatural look or gesture is promptly convicted by the eye. The co-operation of sensibility and intelligence of which Talma speaks, has thus to be conducted under the most exacting conditions. There must be no suggestion of effort. The essence of acting is its apparent Spontaneity. Perfect illusion is attained when every effect seems to be an accident. If the declamation is too measured, the sense of truth is at once impaired 3 if, on the other hand, it falls only the shadow of a shade below the level of appropriate expres sion, the auditor's sympathy is instantly checked. The union of grandeur without pomp, and nature without triviality, is of an artistic ideals the most difficult to attain; and with this goal before him no actor can feel that his art is a plaything. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theatre is often called the mirror of life; and as actors we provide the reflections of reality. This thesis examines what I feel my responsibility is as a black female artist; how I explore the possibilities of character within that responsibility; and how the development of the role of Skoolie, in Kia Corthron's Come Down Burning served as the catalyst for the establishment of my personal creative process. Chapter One states my philosophy about acting, and what I believe to be my responsibility as a theatre artist; it also explains how I became an actor, and early experiences that prompted my career. Chapter Two discusses my journey in graduate school, how I discovered my strengths and weaknesses as an actor during my matriculation; and how those discoveries informed my long and short-term goals. Chapter Three reveals the struggle of the black actor, and how that struggle affected both the choosing and preparation of my thesis role. Chapter Four describes the black female circumstance, while outlining the extensive research that I completed for my thesis role. Chapter Five displays my use of theory in performance, including an explanation of the development of my creative process established through the preparation of my thesis role. Chapter Six explores the aesthetic value of truth in performance, and how my philosophy about acting has been solidified through the process of developing my thesis.
