Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cosmetic surgery represents an extreme form of modern grooming. It is the fastest growing medical specialty, yet misconceptions abound about those who undertake it and their reasons for doing so. With a grounded approach, engaging 30 women through in-depth interview, this study explores how they chose cosmetic surgery as an option. Their accounts frame a theoretical discussion, in which Northrop proposes that cosmetic surgery is initiated within the vulnerable and divisive relationship between the self and its poor body image. Poor body image and the attempt at its reparation are examined conceptually through shame and narcissism. With compelling case studies and a multi-disciplinary approach, Reflecting on Cosmetic Surgery demonstrates that shame constitutes a framework through which we formulate appearance norms and learn the art of becoming socially embodied. Shame concerns the self, but manifests in response to perceived social phenomena. Through the evaluation and amendment of body image with cosmetic surgery, notions of self and social worthiness are played out. Northrop argues convincingly for a review of the way in which we view narcissism and proposes that shame, and the discomforts arising from it, are implicated in its occurrence. This book will appeal to students and scholars across the social sciences, and particularly in women’s studies and gender studies.

Book excerpt: REFLECTIONS OF THE HEART offers a personal look at the experiences of individual patients in a facial plastic and cosmetic surgeon's practice. The opening chapter by Dr. Jim English provides fascinating insights on his 25 year career in his chosen field of endeavor. The sixteen subsequent chapters present individual women's experiences with their surgical procedures. Each patient reveals thoughts about her own surgery in face-to-face interviews with Dr. Betty Hubbard, a certified health education specialist. The women are from different age groups and backgrounds including secretaries, doctors, teachers and sales representatives. These are stories of self-disclosure told with introspection and honesty. Some are humorous and some are sad but all reflect each woman's sincere desire to help others who have questions about facial plastic and cosmetic sur- gery. Each story includes Dr. English's comments on the individual patients. Before and after photographs illustrate transformations in appearance as well as the emotional changes that resulted. The last section of the book provides valuable information about the most common facial plastic and cosmetic procedures chosen by women. Whether you are simply curious about the motives and experiences of people who undergo surgical enhancement or contemplating having a procedure(s) yourself, this book will give you in-depth in-sight into their surgical experiences.

Book excerpt: Practices of cosmetic surgery have grown exponentially in recent years in both over-developed and developing worlds. What comprises cosmetic surgery has also changed, with a plethora of new procedures and an extraordinary rise of non-surgical operations. As the practices of cosmetic surgery have multiplied and diversified, so have feminist approaches to understanding them. For the first time leading feminist scholars including Susan Bordo, Kathy Davis, Vivian Sobchack and Kathryn Pauly Morgan, have been brought together in this comprehensive volume to reveal the complexity of feminist engagements with the phenomenon that still remains vastly more popular among women. Offering a diversity of theoretical, methodological and political approaches Cosmetic Surgery: A Feminist Primer presents not only the latest, cutting-edge research in this field but a challenging and unique approach to the issue that will be of key interest to researchers across the social sciences and humanities.

Indeed many of the procedures performed by todays aesthetic plastic surgeons have their origins in places and cultures as remote as ancient Egypt and Rome. Written with candor and compassion, Cosmetic Surgery Today presents clear descriptions of the latest techniques, including face lifting, nose correction, liposuction, breast augmentation, reconstructive surgery, procedures specifically for male patients, hair transplantation, and many more. Before-and-after photos clearly show what is involved in each procedure. Cosmetic Surgery Today provides the background necessary for an intelligent, informed discussion about aesthetic surgery that will interest not only potential patients, but also medical professionals in other fields, journalists, stylists, make-up artists, and anyone interested in this much-discussed, but often poorly understood field. Packed with accessible, practical information, this unique resource is a fascinating exploration of the true nature of beauty and well-being and the vital role aesthetic surgery can play in achieving it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One major by-product of the aging baby-boom generation has been a surging interest in cosmetic surgery. Out-patient cosmetic surgery clinics have sprouted up in droves all over the U.S., and the number of cosmetic procedures performed in 2005 increased by over 95% from the previous year. Although procedures like facelifts and abdominoplasties (the 'tummy-tuck') are considered minimally invasive, the anesthetic protocols and regimens here are often overly complex and unnecessarily toxic. Major complications involving anesthesia in this (and any other) surgical milieu can range from severe post-operative nausea and vomiting (PONV) to neuromuscular spasticity to mortality. The mortality spectrum of things may be rare, but there have been many cases in which perfectly healthy cosmetic surgery patients require emergency intervention due to a severe complication involving anesthesia. In recent years, many new anesthetic protocols have been developed to reduce the incidence of PONV and other complications, while ensuring that effective pain management and level of 'un-awareness' during surgery is always maintained.

Book excerpt: Given the wide-ranging nature of the literature one must study in plastic surgery training, a solid grounding in many fundamental principles and procedures is an absolute prerequisite to becoming a competent plastic surgeon. And yet, until now there has been no single source that collects these fundamental topics in one volume; rather, the information has had to be gleaned from the introductory chapters of multiple comprehensive textbooks. The present volume takes a new approach, and provides the trainee an opportunity to learn these fundamentals more efficiently and comprehensively through a single book. This work will prepare the trainee to confidently advance to the more specific core topics in reconstructive and aesthetic plastic surgery. Key Features: Highly efficient presentation and organization of all fundamental plastic surgical topics 21 chapters cover such topics as patient safety; normal and abnormal wound healing; local anesthesia and nerve blocks; soft tissue infections and antibiotics; implants and biomaterials; basic surgical techniques; grafting of fat, skin, bone, and other tissues; flaps; burns; and much more. Each chapter closes with a summary of key points. Ideal for all surgeons in training, Fundamental Topics in Plastic Surgery is a complete introduction to the science and technical expertise of aesthetic and reconstructive plastic surgery.

Book excerpt: Interest in the use of stem cells in aesthetic procedures has been increasing rapidly, reflecting the widespread acknowledgment of the tremendous potential of stem cell fat transfer. This is, however, the first book to be devoted entirely to the subject. The book opens by reviewing the history of the development of pluripotent stem cells and the results of research into the biochemistry and physiology of stem cells. Adipose tissue anatomy and survival are discussed and the wide range of aesthetic procedures involving stem cell fat transfer are then described in detail. These procedures relate to the face, breast, buttocks, legs, hands, penis and Poland syndrome. In addition, potential risks and complications are identified. The book has been written by leading experts and will be an invaluable source of information for students, beginners and experienced surgeons in a range of specialties.
