Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Standard Oil Company emerged out of obscurity in the 1860s to capture 90 percent of the petroleum refining industry in the United States during the Gilded Age. John D. Rockefeller, the company’s founder, organized the company around an almost religious dedication to principles of efficiency. Economic success masked the dark side of efficiency as Standard Oil dumped oil waste into public waterways, filled the urban atmosphere with acrid smoke, and created a consumer safety crisis by selling kerosene below congressional standards. Local governments, guided by a desire to favor the interests of business, deployed elaborate engineering solutions to tackle petroleum pollution at taxpayer expense rather than heed public calls to abate waste streams at their source. Only when refinery pollutants threatened the health of the Great Lakes in the twentieth century did the federal government respond to a nascent environmental movement. Organized around the four classical elements at the core of Standard Oil’s success (earth, air, fire, and water), Refining Nature provides an ecological context for the rise of one of the most important corporations in American history.

Book Synopsis The Refinery of the Future by : James G. Speight
Download or read book The Refinery of the Future written by James G. Speight and published by William Andrew. This book was released on 2010-12-21 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As feedstocks to refineries change, there must be an accompanying change in refinery technology. This means a movement from conventional means of refining heavy feedstocks using (typically) coking technologies to more innovative processes that will coax the last drips of liquid fuels from the feedstock. This book presents the evolution of refinery processes during the last century and as well as the means by which refinery processes will evolve during the next three-to-five decades. Chapters contain material relevant to (1) comparisons of current feedstocks with heavy oil and bio-feedstocks; (2) evolution of refineries since the 1950s, (3) properties and refinability of heavy oil and bio-feedstocks, (4) thermal processes vs. hydroprocesses, and (5) evolution of products to match the environmental market. Process innovations that have influenced refinery processing over the past three decades are presented, as well as the relevant patents that have the potential for incorporation into future refineries.• Comparison of current feedstocks with heavy oil and bio-feedstocks. • Evolution of refineries over the past three decades. • Properties and refinability of heavy oil and bio-feedstocks. • Thermal processes vs. Hydroprocesses. • Evolution of products to match the environmental market. Investigates the engineering and plant design challenges presented by heavy oil and bio-feedstocks Explores the legislatory and regulatory climate, including increasingly stringent environmental requirements Examines the trade-offs of thermal processes vs. hydroprocesses

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Refining Industry of the United States: With List of Refineries, Capacity and Investment and the Oil Jobbers of America There need be no fear about the future supply of crude. There need be little apprehension on the part of refiners of a gasoline substitute that will put the refiner out of business. Other liquids may be found that will explode in inter nal combustion engines, but there is scarcely any likelihood of a competitor of gasoline.
