Les émanations de gaz provenant de nos sites d'enfouissement représentent 26 p. 100 du méthane de source humaine au Canada. Selon les estimations, plus de 25 Mégatonnes (Mt) de CO2 équivalent sont produites dans les sites d'enfouissement canadiens. Les gaz d'enfouissement peuvent être nocifs; toutefois, on peut aussi les convertir en une source d'énergie sûre, qui peut contribuer à la production d'électricité, à l'alimentation des industries et au chauffage des immeubles. Trente-trois sites d'enfouissement canadiens (1997) recueillent ces gaz nocifs, une initiative qui réduit les émissions de CO2 équivalent de 6 Mt par an. En plus de la réduction des gaz à effet de serre, la collecte et l'utilisation des gaz d'enfouissement ont aussi l'avantage de limiter les odeurs, de contrôler les dommages causés à la végétation et de réduire la responsabilité des propriétaires, les risques d'explosion, d'incendie, d'asphyxie et de smog, tout en fournissant une source possible de revenu et de profit. Les bulletins techniques qui mettent en valeur la réussite de six entreprises canadiennes qui utilisent le gaz d'enfouissement pour la génération d'électricité et de chauffage. En plus de capter une énergie précieuse, ces installations réduisent leurs émissions de gaz à effet de serre et contribuent à la lutte menée par le Canada contre le changement climatique.
