This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rate of reduction of iron ore-graphite composite pellets under inert and reducing atmospheres has been investigated in a tailor made thermo-gravimetric packed-bed reactor. A very low overall apparent activation energy estimated from experimental data indicates that the reduction is not chemical kinetics controlled. A kinetic model has been developed to quantify the temporal evolution of different iron oxide phases and metallic iron. The rate-dependent parameters (frequency factors and activation energy) have been estimated from experimental data by applying an optimization tool (Genetic Algorithm). The predicted phases at various degrees of reduction were verified by X-ray diffraction and metallographic investigation. A simplified thermal model has also been developed to show the role of heat transfer on the kinetics of the reduction process under inert atmosphere. The reduction kinetics of the composite pellets in the packed bed under reactive atmosphere is not heat transfer controlled and might possibly be controlled by CO-gas mass transfer through the pellets.
Book Synopsis Kinetics of Iron Ore Reduction by Coal and Charcoal by :

Book excerpt: In the present investigation, an attempt has been done to study the simultaneous effects of the major processing variables on the extent of reduction of iron ore pellets surrounded by coal or charcoal fines in an externally heated cylindrical steel container (diameter 5cm and height 10cm) placed in muffle furnace. The project goal is to compare the reduction potential of coal and charcoal in reduction of iron ore pellets. Wood charcoal contains very low levels of gangue, sulphur and volatile matter therefore, presenting itself as a very desirable reductant for the reduction of iron ore. The variables studied are time and temperature. The reduction was done at temperatures 8500C, 9000C, 9500C and 10000c. The percentage (degree) of reduction of pellets was calculated at 15, 30, 45, 60 and 90 minutes, after the furnace reached the predetermined reduction temperature. The experiments were statistically designed such that the effect of each variable can be quantitatively assessed and compared. The results showed that, there is an increase in degree of reduction with increase in time and temperature and use of charcoal instead of coal also increased the degree of reduction due to higher fixed carbon content of charcoal. The percentage of swelling showed a random variation with time and temperature. The activation energy for the reduction of iron ore pellet was found to be higher in case of coal as compared to that of in case of charcoal; this indicates that reduction of iron ore by charcoal will be more favorable in case of charcoal.

Download or read book Reduction Kinetics of Iron Ore Pellets and the Effect of Binders written by and published by . This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reduction of Iron Ore Pellets with a particular percentage of binders i.e. 2% of Dextrine and 2% of Bentonite was carried out for the temperature range 900 to 1050°C. In reduction kinetic study the most satisfactory model was to taken, the slope of the initial linear region of fractional reduction vs. time curve was measured, which gives the rate constant (k). Ln k vs. 1/T plots were straight line from which Activation Energy was calculated. Pellets having different percentages of binders were reduced and compared to find the effect of binders.

Book Synopsis Sustainable Utilization of Metals by : Bernd Friedrich
Download or read book Sustainable Utilization of Metals written by Bernd Friedrich and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-05-23 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The high demand for advanced metallic materials raises the need for an extensive recycling of metals and such a sustainable use of raw materials. "Sustainable Utilization of Metals - Processing, Recovery and Recycling" comprises the latest scientific achievements in efficient production of metals and such addresses sustainable resource use as part of the circular economy strategy. This policy drives the present contributions, aiming on the recirculation of EoL-streams such as Waste Electric and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), multi-metal alloys or composite materials back into metal production. This needs a holistic approach, resulting in the maximal avoidance of waste. Considering both aspects, circular economy and material design, recovery and use of minor metals play an essential role, since their importance for technological applications often goes along with a lack of supply on the world market. Additionally, their ignoble character and low concentration in recycling materials cause an insufficient recycling rate of these metals, awarding them the status of “critical metals”. In order to minimize losses and energy consumption, this issue explores concepts for the optimization concerning the interface between mechanical and thermal pre-treatment and metallurgical processes. Such new approaches in material design, structural engineering and substitution are provided in the chapters.
