Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2017 in the subject Health - Public Health, grade: 5.0, Sophia University Yotsuya Campus (Graduate School of Global Studies), course: Global Studies, language: English, abstract: This paper argues that the lack of a continuous, serious and robust government-driven and coordinated information dissemination program in Liberia on the importance of antenatal care among a highly illiterate population constitutes significant impediment to the overall goal to reducing maternal mortality and contributes to the high rate of maternal mortality. The argument is founded on two fundamental observations. These observations include: the high illiteracy rate in Liberia and its contribution to maternal mortality and, the underutilization improved and expanded maternal health facilities and services. We see these two points as mutually reinforcing and that one will not fare well in the absence of the other. We conclude with five precursory recommendations and emphasize that if any policy to reduce maternal mortality in Liberia is to be successful, holding all other factors constant, such policy must include a deliberate program for increasing information dissemination for maternal education. The author, Baba Sillah, is a post-graduate student at the Sophia University, Tokyo, Japan. He formerly served as Assistant Minister/Special Assistant to Minister of Foreign Affairs of Liberia.

UNICEF's flagship publication, The State of the World's Children 2009, addresses maternal mortality, one of the most intractable problems for development work.The difference in pregnancy risk between women in developing countries and their peers in the industrialised world is often termed the greatest health divide in the world. A woman in Niger has a one in seven chance of dying during the course of her lifetime from complications during pregnancy or delivery. That's in stark contrast to the risk for mothers in America, where it's one in 4,800 or in Ireland, where it's just one in 48,000. Addressing that gap is a multidisciplinary challenge, requiring an emphasis on education, human resources, community involvement and social equality. At a minimum, women must be guaranteed antenatal care, skilled birth attendants and emergency obstetrics, and postpartum care. These essential interventions will only be guaranteed within the context of improved education and the abolition of discrimination.

Investments in the continuum of care can have significant returns for improved and equitable access, health, poverty, and health systems. 3. Book excerpt: The Pro-Poor Agenda for Prosperity and Development 2018 to 2023 (PAPD) is the second in the series of 5-year National Development Plans (NDP) anticipated under the Liberia Vision 2030 framework. It follows the Agenda for Transformation 2012-2017 (AfT). It is informed as well by lessons learned from the implementation of the Interim Poverty Reduction Strategy 2007 (iPRS) and the Poverty Reduction Strategy (2008-2011). The fundamentals underpinning the PAPD are: i) Liberia is rich in human and natural resources; but ii) is deprived of development largely because its human capital lacks the knowledge to transform the natural resources into wealth—whether through farming, mining, fishing, or other productive ventures that require technology or financial investments. Consequently, Liberia is relatively rich in natural capital but relatively poor in relations to its peers in both human and produced capital. Moreover, because of a legacy of entrenched inequality in access to development opportunities, widespread infrastructure deficits and pervasive poverty have become the binding constraints to future growth and prosperity.

Book excerpt: Cardiovascular disease (CVD), once thought to be confined primarily to industrialized nations, has emerged as a major health threat in developing countries. Cardiovascular disease now accounts for nearly 30 percent of deaths in low and middle income countries each year, and is accompanied by significant economic repercussions. Yet most governments, global health institutions, and development agencies have largely overlooked CVD as they have invested in health in developing countries. Recognizing the gap between the compelling evidence of the global CVD burden and the investment needed to prevent and control CVD, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) turned to the IOM for advice on how to catalyze change. In this report, the IOM recommends that the NHLBI, development agencies, nongovernmental organizations, and governments work toward two essential goals: creating environments that promote heart healthy lifestyle choices and help reduce the risk of chronic diseases, and building public health infrastructure and health systems with the capacity to implement programs that will effectively detect and reduce risk and manage CVD. To meet these goals, the IOM recommends several steps, including improving cooperation and collaboration; implementing effective and feasible strategies; and informing efforts through research and health surveillance. Without better efforts to promote cardiovascular health, global health as a whole will be undermined.
