Book excerpt: The High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard is the latest video coding project developed by the Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding (JCT-VC) which involves the International Telecommunication Unit (ITU-T) Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) and the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) standardization organizations. The HEVC standard is an optimization of the previous standard H.264/AVC (Advanced Video coding) with the bit-rate reduction of about 50% at the same visual quality. The most complex and time consuming process in the HEVC encoding is the motion estimation. The process involves finding the best matching block in the current frame by comparing it with a reference frame. Unlike, H.264 which had fixed sized blocks, HEVC has variable sized blocks which reduce the number of bits required by certain blocks in the frame where there is no motion change. But still the process of finding the best match is very time consuming and imposes computational complexity. Various algorithms like three-step search, diamond search and square search have been developed to reduce the computational complexity of the motion estimation module. The complexity can be further reduced by using an early termination technique to end the search process once it reaches a certain threshold. In this thesis, an algorithm is proposed for early termination of the search points by calculating a threshold. The algorithm is based on the predicted motion vector and the sum of absolute differences of the predicted motion vector for the search points. It is observed that if the prediction to the starting point is precise, then it can be used to calculate a threshold value and if any search point goes below the threshold, it can be declared as the best match. The experimental results based on the proposed algorithm tested on various video sequences show a reduction of the encoding time by about 5% to 17% with negligible Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) loss ( less than 1 dB) as compared to the existing algorithm. The algorithm is more efficient for SD and HD resolution videos. The bit-rate increase is from 2% to 13.8 %. Metrics like Bjontegaard (BD)-PSNR and BD-Bit-rate are also used.

The HEVC standard is based on the previous widely used H.264/AVC (Advance Video Coding) standard [10] but includes many new tools and improvements in different key areas which has resulted in achieving a 50% bitrate reduction compared to its predecessor amidst maintaining the same visual quality [11] at a cost of increased complexity. Among the different vital blocks of a video codec the motion estimation and motion compensation blocks are considered as the key and the most complex section. The calculations involving the derivation of motion estimation followed by predictor picture derivation leading to a residual image which is in turn followed by motion compensation using the previously encoded motion information is responsible for consuming a large part of the encoding time and device resource. Since the video signal largely consists of real world objects which have regions of homogeneous motion, the encoder tries to make use of these regions of common motion to bring about a reduction in bitrate. To achieve this reduction the encoder adapts the technique of motion merging which exploit the redundancies among the motion information data obtained through motion estimation. Although the present algorithm used in HEVC is capable of making use of these redundancies they still impose a large computational and encoding time overhead on the codecs affecting the device performance. The thesis proposes an algorithm which selectively performs the motion merging allowing the formation of larger blocks of homogenous motion which reduces the bitrate and also utilizes the typical characteristics of video signal to reduce the encoding time at a cost of little loss of quality. The experimental results based on the proposed algorithm on several test sequences suggest a reduction in encoding time by 14-24%, reduction in bitrate by 2-7% at a little loss of quality by 2-6%. Metrics such as BD-PSNR (Bjontegaard Delta Peak Signal to Noise Ratio), BD-bitrate (Bjontegaard Delta bitrate) are used.

Lot of research is going towards reducing the complexity of this codec, at the same time, maintaining the visual quality that it produces and maintaining the reduced encoding time from its predecessor. As an effort to decrease the encoding time further, there can be several approaches. Parallel processing is taking a dominant role in many places, especially in Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) and multi-cored processor based applications. Because of the ability of the parallel programming to utilize the multiple cores efficiently at the same time, in place of serial programming, this has been used in many applications which demand quicker completion. If areas that are parallelizable are identified in any codec [38] (HEVC in this case), the encoding time can be drastically reduced by writing an efficient algorithm. In parallel programming, it is very important that the parallelized portion has the least amount of dependencies; otherwise it will lead to reverse effects of what is actually expected. Thus, the success lies in identifying the region of the codec that contributes more towards encoding time and that has least dependencies, and optimizing that portion of the codec. In this thesis, thorough analysis is done to identify the hot spots in the codec implementation, HM16.7, of High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) developed by the JCTVC team. This hotspot analysis is implemented using Intel's most powerful tool, Intel® vTune Amplifier. The results of this hotspot analysis will be functions and loops that use most of the CPU time. Once this is identified, the respective function is targeted to be optimized using Parallel programming with OpenMP. Iterative runs are carried out on the modified code to check whether the code has been reasonably optimized. The final optimized code is tested for encoding videos using metrics such as PSNR (Peak Signal to Noise Ratio), R-D plot (Rate Distortion) and computational complexity in terms of encoding time. Through optimization of the HEVC HM16.7 encoder, there is an average reduction of ~24.7% to ~42.3% in encoding time with ~3.5 to 7% PSNR gain and ~1.6% to 4% bitrate increase.

Regarding the algorithm of ME, the diamond search (DS) is used in the encoding process through several video resolutions. A time saving around 46.75% is obtained with an acceptable distortion in terms of video quality and bitrate compared to the reference test model HM.16.2. Our contribution is compared to other works for better evaluation.

This enhancement is primarily due to the introduction of flexible quad-based-tree partitioning structures for motion estimation (ME) and image transformation. However, finding the optimum coding structure, which is done by an exhaustive rate-distortion optimization (RDO) process, is what contributes to increasing the computational complexity. In this thesis, we propose a set of early termination algorithms to reduce the HEVC video encoding complexity by predicting both the split decisions of Coding Units (CUs) and the coding modes of Prediction Units (PUs). A video sequence-dependent approach is used in which frames belonging to the video being encoded are utilized for generating a classification model. At each CU depth level, features representing the given CU are extracted from both the current and previously encoded CUs. The feature vectors (FVs) are then utilized for generating dimensionality reduction and classification models. These models are in turn used at each coding depth to predict the split and mode decisions of subsequence CUs. In this work, we use stepwise regression, random forest feature importance, and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) for dimensionality reduction. Moreover, polynomial networks, random forests, and J48 decision trees are used for classification. Using seventeen video sequences with four different spatial resolution classes, the proposed solution is assessed in terms of the classification accuracy, Bjontegaard Delta bitrate (BD-rate), BD Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (BD-PSNR) and computational complexity reduction (CCR). On average, the CU early termination scheme achieved a CCR of 38.5% with an average classification accuracy of 78.1% at a negligible cost of 0.539% and -0.021 dB in terms of BD-rate and BD-SNR, respectively. The PU early termination scheme attained an overall CCR of 20.9% with an average classification accuracy of 86.5% at the cost of a BD-rate of 0.248% and a BD-PSNR of -0.01 dB. When jointly implemented, an overall CCR of 50.1% was achieved with a BD-rate increase of 2% and a BD-PSNR decrease of 0.079 dB."--Abstract.

While the HEVC is based on the same architecture of the widely used H.264/AVC (Advance Video Coding) standard [8], it includes many new coding tools, and almost all the encoder blocks are optimized with respect to their counterparts in the H.264/AVC standard. This allows the new standard to achieve up to 50% bitrate reduction compared to its predecessor with the same visual quality at the cost of increased complexity [1]. Like H.264/AVC, mode decisions with Motion Estimation (ME) remain among the most time-consuming computations in HEVC. In an inter-prediction mode decision, a fullsearch algorithm searches for every possible block size and refines the results from integer-pel to quarter-pel resolution. Thus, a full-search algorithm guarantees the highest level of compression performance. However, the considerable computational complexity for a mode decision decreases the encoding speed. In this thesis a fast adaptive termination [20] algorithm is proposed that terminates early the mode decision in inter-prediction for HEVC. Based on Rate Distortion (RD) cost, all the inter prediction modes are classified as skip or non-skip modes, and to select the best mode minimum RD cost of these two modes are predicted. For skip mode, the mode decision is predicted in early stage while in non-skip mode different stages are proposed to speed-up the mode decision. Experimental results based on several video test sequences suggest a decrease of about 25%-40% in encoding time is achieved with implementation of the Fast Adaptive Termination algorithm for interprediction mode decision with negligible degradation in peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR). Metrics such as BD-bitrate (Bjøntegaard Delta bitrate), BD-PSNR (Bjøntegaard Delta Peak Signal to Noise Ratio), SSIM (Structural Similarity) and computational complexity are also used.

Of the 149 full papers submitted, 36 were selected for oral presentation and 33 for poster presentation; of the 34 special session papers submitted, 24 were selected for oral presentation and 2 for poster presentation; in addition, 5 demonstrations were accepted from 8 submissions, and all 7 submissions to VBS 2017. All papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 198 submissions. MMM is a leading international conference for researchers and industry practitioners for sharing new ideas, original research results and practical development experiences from all MMM related areas, broadly falling into three categories: multimedia content analysis; multimedia signal processing and communications; and multimedia applications and services.

Book excerpt: This book discusses efficient prediction techniques for the current state-of-the-art High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard, focusing on the compression of a wide range of video signals, such as 3D video, Light Fields and natural images. The authors begin with a review of the state-of-the-art predictive coding methods and compression technologies for both 2D and 3D multimedia contents, which provides a good starting point for new researchers in the field of image and video compression. New prediction techniques that go beyond the standardized compression technologies are then presented and discussed. In the context of 3D video, the authors describe a new predictive algorithm for the compression of depth maps, which combines intra-directional prediction, with flexible block partitioning and linear residue fitting. New approaches are described for the compression of Light Field and still images, which enforce sparsity constraints on linear models. The Locally Linear Embedding-based prediction method is investigated for compression of Light Field images based on the HEVC technology. A new linear prediction method using sparse constraints is also described, enabling improved coding performance of the HEVC standard, particularly for images with complex textures based on repeated structures. Finally, the authors present a new, generalized intra-prediction framework for the HEVC standard, which unifies the directional prediction methods used in the current video compression standards, with linear prediction methods using sparse constraints. Experimental results for the compression of natural images are provided, demonstrating the advantage of the unified prediction framework over the traditional directional prediction modes used in HEVC standard.

Book excerpt: The International Telecommunication Union (ITU-T), Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) and the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) standardization organizations working in a partnership known as the Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding (JCT-VC) came up with the latest video project known as the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard. This standard, also known as the H.265 standard, is based on the same architecture as that of the more widely implemented H.264/AVC (Advance Video Coding). The HEVC has incorporated many improvements like increased bitrate reduction, increased coding efficiency [7] and compression efficiency, but, at the cost of increased complexity. The motion estimation (ME) process in the encoder is the most time-consuming part in both H.264 and the HEVC. The purpose of this thesis is to make use of parallel programming to achieve faster encoding times with minimal losses. There are certain conditional statements in the HM 13.0 code, which run in a sequential pattern for a long time. Those statements which are having less or no dependencies are chosen as they are ideal for parallel programming. The xTZSearch and TZ8PointDiamondSearch patterns in HM13.0 consist of several conditional statements without dependencies. Running those statements in parallel allows the program to check for different conditions simultaneously and jump directly to the next step rather than checking them one-by-one. OpenMP is the API used to achieve parallel computing by making use of the multicore processor in the computer used to run the test sequences. As expected, there was a reduction of 10% - 25% in encoding time when compared to the original HM13.0. The proposed method was evaluated using different metrics like encoding time, percentage reduction in encoding time, BD-PSNR (Bjontegaard Delta Peak Signal to Noise Ratio), BD-bitrate (Bjontegaard Delta bitrate) and RD (rate distortion). Experimental results based on several video sequences suggest the negligible change in BD-PSNR and BD-bitrate with the implementation of the proposed method. It can be concluded that, with the help of parallel programming, the encoding time of the HEVC encoder can be reduced by a significant amount.
