This book was released on 2012-02-02 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report by the National Audit Office on progress by central government departments in reducing costs concludes that departments took effective action in 2010-11, cutting spending in real terms by 2.3 per cent or £7.9 billion, compared with 2009-10. The analysis of departments' accounts supports the Efficiency and Reform Group's estimate that Government spending moratoria and efficiency initiatives, including cuts to back-office and avoidable costs, contributed around half of the figure, some £3.75 billion. However, the report warns that departments are less well-placed to make the long-term changes needed to achieve the further 19 per cent over the four years to 2014-15, as required by the spending review. This is partly because of gaps in their understanding of costs and risks, making it more difficult to identify how to deliver activities and services at a permanently lower cost. Fundamental changes will be needed to achieve sustainable reductions on the scale required. It is unclear how far spending reductions represent year-on-year changes in efficiency, or whether front-line services are affected; and the departments' forward plans examined by the NAO are not based on a strategic view. Departments' financial data on basic spending patterns is sufficient to manage budgets in-year, but information about the consequences of changes in spending is less good. Longer term reform is a Cabinet Office priority and departments will need to look beyond short-term cost cutting measures and make major operational change. Cost reduction plans also need to build in contingency measures to cover unexpected risks.

This book was released on 2011-06-17 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Private Sector Strategies for Public Service Leaders No corner of the government or public sector has been spared from budget turmoil in recent years. Among budget cuts, increased requirements, and new threats and challenges, governments typically balance the scales through (1) increased funding and/ or (2) rationalizing services or service levels. This book gives you a third option. It’s called high performance, and it’s been implemented in the private sector—with great success—for more than two decades. This hands-on guide, written by the global consultants from Accenture, shows you how to apply these business principles in any public organization. Learn how to: Improve the outcomes you deliver—while lowering the cost to deliver them. Streamline your operations—by increasing speed, agility, and efficiency. Build a high-performance “anatomy” to strengthen your organization. Manage assets, decrease risks and losses, and deliver true excellence. Featuring case studies from the public sector, including federal, state, local, agencies, bureaus, and departments, this unique guide takes you inside government organizations, where high performance “anatomy” is already making a difference. You’ll discover low-cost techniques deployed by the Naval Air Systems Command and the IRS, as well as high-performance solutions for problems as diverse as homeland security, disaster response, health care costs, and dwindling resources. High Performance Government provides a proven method for adapting to the “New Normal” of lower budgets by showing you how to do even more with even less—creating a learning, working environment that reacts to change. This is how the top companies in the world increase productivity and profits through any market conditions. From Wall Street to Washington and Main Street, real success is driven by execution excellence. This book gives you the solutions you need to lower cost and create a leaner more efficient organization. Praise for Building High Performance Government “Building High Performance Government is a fast read with a big message. It explains how the inevitable downsizing of governments at all levels—federal, state, local—doesn’t have to also mean fewer or lower-quality services. This book highlights viable strategies already in use today to create better alignment and greater productivity in government.” —Graham Richards, Former Mayor of Fort Wayne, Indiana “Every level of government is experiencing a budget crunch these days, and that always results in slashing services. This book can help public sector leaders find another option—how to deliver on their core mission at a much lower cost.” —Sean O’Keefe, CEO , EADS North America, former Administrator of NASA, former Secretary of the Navy and former chancellor of Louisiana State University (LSU) “A solid read for federal, state, and local government leaders wondering how to ‘do more, without more.’ Building High Performance Government focuses on the main things that leaders can do to help their organization get more out of each tax dollar while also improving quality and speed—an absolutely essential requirement in today’s fiscally constrained environment.” —David Melcher, Senior Vice President, ITT Corporation; President, ITT Defense & Information Solutions, US Army Lieut enant General (Ret.) formerly the Army’s Military Deputy for Budget and Deputy Chief of Staff for Programs in the Pentagon

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Routledge Handbook of Social and Sustainable Finance brings together an international cast of leading authorities to map out and display the disparate voices, traditions and professional communities engaged in social finance activity. With a clear societal or environmental mission, foundations, individual and group investors, as well as public bodies around the world have become increasingly eager to finance and support innovative forms of doing business. Together, founders and established businesses alike are embracing new sustainable business models with a distinct stakeholder approach to tackle social or environmental problems in what they see as a failed economic system in crisis. As a result, the topic of social and sustainable finance is at the forefront of financial economic thought. This Handbook is divided up into three parts. The first, "The Landscape of Social and Sustainable Finance and Investments", comprises of chapters from a multitude of perspectives in an effort to grasp the entirety of the landscape. The second, "Challenges, Suggestions, Critiques and Debates", focuses on areas ranging from sociological underpinnings to critical takes on markets, and the identification of specialized business models. Amongst ethical considerations, topics include the scaling of impact, an analysis of sustainability as risk prevention and comparative analyses of various methods of justification and measurement. In the third and final section, "Markets and Institutions", contributions range from various perspectives on sustainable banking to environmental marketplaces, and finally on to practical cases and country specific observations. This volume is essential reading for both academics and students in economics and finance. It is also of interest to those who study environmental economics, microeconomics and banking.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book concludes a trilogy that began with Intelligent Cities: Innovation, Knowledge Systems and digital spaces (Routledge 2002) and Intelligent Cities and Globalisation of Innovation Networks (Routledge 2008). Together these books examine intelligent cities as environments of innovation and collaborative problem-solving. In this final book, the focus is on planning, strategy and governance of intelligent cities. Divided into three parts, each section elaborates upon complementary aspects of intelligent city strategy and planning. Part I is about the drivers and architectures of the spatial intelligence of cities, while Part II turns to planning processes and discusses top-down and bottom-up planning for intelligent cities. Cities such as Amsterdam, Manchester, Stockholm and Helsinki are examples of cities that have used bottom-up planning through the gradual implementation of successive initiatives for regeneration. On the other hand, Living PlanIT, Neapolis in Cyprus, and Saudi Arabia intelligent cities have started with the top-down approach, setting up urban operating systems and common central platforms. Part III focuses on intelligent city strategies; how cities should manage the drivers of spatial intelligence, create smart environments, mobilise communities, and offer new solutions to address city problems. Main findings of the book are related to a series of models which capture fundamental aspects of intelligent cities making and operation. These models consider structure, function, planning, strategies toward intelligent environments and a model of governance based on mobilisation of communities, knowledge architectures, and innovation cycles.
