Book excerpt: The book "Redox" provides vast insight into the oxidation-reduction reactions to its readers. The book consists of three sections that include redox in the coordination compounds, organic compounds and polymerization; redox in electrochemistry; and redox and fish welfare. The first section consists of three chapters that describe the role of redox reactions in several fields such as transition metal chemistry, degradation processes of toxic compounds and dyes in treatment of water and wastewater, the catalysis of oxidation of organic compounds by metal active sites, and synthesis of copolymers. The second section consists of two chapters. The role of redox reactions and reactivity description of compounds are discussed in the second section of the book. The non-aqueous redox flow batteries are described in this section. The third section extensively discusses the redox balance and fish welfare and consists of one chapter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Redox-Active Ligands Authoritative resource showcasing a new family of ligands that can lead to better catalysts and promising applications in organic synthesis Redox-Active Ligands gives a comprehensive overview of the unique features of redox-active ligands, describing their structure and synthesis, the characterization of their coordination complexes, and important applications in homogeneous catalysis. The work reflects the diversity of the subject by including ongoing research spanning coordination chemistry, organometallic chemistry, bioinspired catalysis, proton and electron transfer, and the ability of such ligands to interact with early and late transition metals, lanthanides, and actinides. The book is divided into three parts, devoted to introduction and concepts, applications, and case studies. After the introduction on key concepts related to the field, and the different types of ligands and complexes in which ligand-centered redox activity is commonly observed, mechanistic and computational studies are described. The second part focuses on catalytic applications of redox-active complexes, including examples from radical transformations, coordination chemistry and organic synthesis. Finally, case studies of redox-active guanidine ligands, and of lanthanides and actinides are presented. Other specific sample topics covered include: An overview of the electronic features of redox-active ligands, covering their historical perspective and biological background The versatility and mode of action of redox-active ligands, which sets them apart from more classic and tunable ligands such as phosphines or N-heterocyclic carbenes Preparation and catalytic applications of complexes of stable N-aryl radicals Metal complexes with redox-active ligands in H+/e- transfer transformations By providing up-to-date information on important concepts and applications, Redox-Active Ligands is an essential reading for researchers working in organometallic and coordination chemistry, catalysis, organic synthesis, and (bio)inorganic chemistry, as well as newcomers to the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides researchers in the fields of organic chemistry, organometallic chemistry and homogeneous catalysis with an overview of significant recent developments in the area of metal-ligand cooperativity, with a focus on pincer architectures. The various contributions highlight the widespread impact of M–L co-operativity phenomena on modern organometallic chemistry and catalyst development. The development of efficient and selective catalytic transformations relies on the understanding and fine control of the various elementary reactions that constitutes a catalytic cycle. Co-operative ligands, which actively participate in bond making and bond breaking together to the metal they support, open up new avenues in this area. In particular, buttressing a weak or reactive metal-ligand bond by flanking coordinating arms in a pincer ligand design is proving a versatile strategy to access robust metal complexes that exhibit unusual and selective reactivity patterns.

Book excerpt: Ionisation Constants of Inorganic Acids and Bases in Aqueous Solution, Second Edition provides a compilation of tables that summarize relevant data recorded in the literature up to the end of 1980 for the ionization constants of inorganic acids and bases in aqueous solution. This book includes references to acidity functions for strong acids and bases, as well as details about the formation of polynuclear species. This text then explains the details of each column of the tables, wherein column 1 gives the name of the substance and the negative logarithm of the ionization constant and column 2 gives the temperature of measurements in degree Celsius. This book presents as well the method of measurement and the literature references that are listed alphabetically at the end of the tables. Chemists will find this book useful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The water - dioxygen cycle is a fundamental yet complex process. Important intermediates often include peroxide and superoxide. It is well established the metal ions can profoundly affect both the rate and the mechanism of this cycle, often in a catalytic manner. We have thoroughly characterized peroxo complexes in aqueous solution in order to probe the mechanistic role played by the metal ion. In effect, we start in the middle of the water - dioxygen cycle with a well defined system. The early transition metals in their highest oxidation states have been used as the metal ions for these studies. These do ions rapidly form robust peroxo and superoxo complexes. We have examined the redox chemistry of these complexes. This chemistry is compared with that of the dioxygen analogues H2O2(or HO2) and HO2(or O2- ) for the purpose of assessing in a detailed manner the role of the metal ion. In a limited sense these studies are complementary to intensive research efforts by others on such topics as the use of peroxo complexes as oxygen transfer agents in synthesis, the development of singlet oxygen generators, the utilization of dioxygen in biological systems, the search for catalysts for the oxygen electrode component of fuel cells, and decontamination procedures that use hydrogen peroxide as the oxidant.
