Book Synopsis Socialism and the Experience of Time by : Julian Wright
Download or read book Socialism and the Experience of Time written by Julian Wright and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-06-30 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we make social democracy? Should we seize the unknown possibilities offered by the future, or does real change develop when we focus our attention on the immediate present? The modern tradition of social revolution suggested that the present is precisely the time that needs to be surpassed, but can society change without an intimate focus on today's experience of social injustice? In Socialism and the Experience of Time, Julian Wright asks how socialists in France from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century tried to follow a democratic commitment to the present. The debate about time that emerged in French socialism lay beneath the surface of political arguments within the left. But how did this focus on the present relate to the tradition of revolution in France? What did socialism have to say about social experience in the present, and how did this discussion shape socialism as a movement? Wright examines French socialism's fascination with modern history, through a new reading of Jean Jaurès' multi-authored project to write a 'socialist history' of France since 1789. Then, in four interlocking biographical essays, he analyses the reformist and idealist socialism of the Third Republic, long side-lined in the historical literature. With a sometimes emotional focus on the present times of Benoît Malon, Georges Renard, Marcel Sembat, and Léon Blum, a personal history unfolds that allows us to revisit the traditional narrative of French socialism. This is not so much a story of the future hope for revolution, as an intimate account of socialism, intellectual engagement, and the human present.

Book excerpt: Franz Rosenzweig's near-conversion to Christianity in the summer of 1913 and his subsequent decision three months later to recommit himself to Judaism is one of the foundational narratives of modern Jewish thought. In this new account of events, Benjamin Pollock suggests that what lay at the heart of Rosenzweig's religious crisis was not a struggle between faith and reason, but skepticism about the world and hope for personal salvation. A close examination of this important time in Rosenzweig’s life, the book also sheds light on the full trajectory of his philosophical development.

This book was released on 2017-08-29 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Nevin's vision of the church as "one, holy, catholic, and apostolic" grew out of his critique of the revivalism and sectarianism that prevailed throughout evangelical Christianity in the nineteenth century. He deepens his perception of catholicity as an expression of Christian wholeness, his response to the parochialism that ruled American religion and life. He grounds congregational life and mission in the Lordship of Jesus Christ, ordered by the whole Christian tradition, which comes into focus in the Apostles' Creed. This edition carefully preserves the original texts while providing extensive introductions, annotations, and bibliography to both orient the reader and to facilitate further scholarship. The Mercersburg Theology Study Series presents for the first time attractive, readable, scholarly modern editions of the key writings of the nineteenth-century movement known as the Mercersburg Theology. An ambitious multi-year project, it aims to make an important contribution to the academic community and to the broader public, who can at last be properly introduced to this unique blend of American and European Reformed and Catholic theology.

Book Synopsis Savage Kings by : Rev'd Dr Graham J Whelan OAM
Download or read book Savage Kings written by Rev'd Dr Graham J Whelan OAM and published by Rev'd Padre Graham J Whelan OAM. This book was released on 2022-01-10 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I heard a comment on and about the words ‘conspiracy theory’. The word ‘conspiracy’ means to plot for an evil purpose or evil-doing. If I am accused of ‘conspiracy’ by revealing evil plans or evil men – is this wrong? And if the ‘theory’ is proven to be fact, then all needs to be revealed. I remember from teleological ethical theory that what is ‘good’ to a good or righteous person is usually ‘good’ – but what is ‘good’ to an evil person is usually ‘evil’. Remember Hitler thought it was ‘good’ to exterminate the Jews – but it was ‘total evil’!What is ‘good’ to an evil man or even men is ‘total evil’.To truly understand good and evil there is the urgent need to understand the Truth of the Bible where the only True God reveals Himself. (Isaiah 45:5,6). Apart from understanding our lives in relation to the Bible, a prime reason for this Book comes from the wonderful revelations of Dr Judy Wood and her book “Where did the Towers go ?”.
