Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not every lie sounds untrue. Some lies are repeated so often they seem to be common sense. That's why lies about God are so dangerous. The Gospel According to Satan examines eight lies the enemy wants us to believe and provides eight lines of counterattack against them. The lies include: God just wants you to be happy; you only live once you need to live your truth; and just let go and let God. Jared C. Wilson reveals why these lies appeal to us, shows how they harm us, and provides ways to counteract them. We can renounce Satan's counterfeit gospel, but first we must see it for what it is. "Enumerates the major ways the Devil uses his cunning and calculating ways of luring us off the narrow road of God's grace. We will all do well to read this book and confront the lies we are being sold."--Kyle Idleman, senior pastor of Southeast Christian Church and author of Not a Fan and Don’t Give Up "A unique, compelling, and even witty look at the devil's current greatest hits--lies we urgently need to unmask." --Sam Allberry, speaker for Ravi Zacharias International Ministries and author of 7 Myths About Singleness and Why Does God Care Who I Sleep With? "One of the most thought-provoking writers in the Christian world today... He doesn’t just describe the tantalizing falsehoods of our age, he exposes how they've slithered into our hearts."--Matt Smethurst, managing editor at The Gospel Coalition and author of Before You Open Your Bible

Tragedy and pain inevitably touch our lives in some way. We long to feel whole, but more often than not, the way we've learned to deal with our wounds pushes us away from the very restoration we need most. Renowned psychologist Dr. Dan Allender and counselor and teacher Cathy Loerzel present a life-changing process of true connection and healing with ourselves, God, and others. With a clear, biblically trustworthy method, Allender and Loerzel walk you through a journey of profound inner transformation--from the shame and hurt of old emotional wounds to true freedom and healing. Drawn from modern research and their pioneering work at The Allender Center, they will help you identify your core trauma in one of the three outcast archetypes--the widow, orphan, or stranger--and chart your path of growth into the God-given roles of priest, prophet, or leader. This book will help you learn: What to do about feeling out-of-place and directionless How your coping mechanisms create a false sense of health How to embrace your divine calling and find lasting reconciliation How your heart wounds are your unique invitation to true strength and purpose. Book excerpt: Power has a God-given role in human relationships and institutions, but it can lead to abuse when used in unhealthy ways. Speaking into current #MeToo and #ChurchToo conversations, this book shows that the body of Christ desperately needs to understand the forms power takes, how it is abused, and how to respond to abuses of power. Although many Christians want to prevent abuse in their churches and organizations, they lack a deep and clear-eyed understanding of how power actually works. Internationally recognized psychologist Diane Langberg offers a clinical and theological framework for understanding how power operates, the effects of the abuse of power, and how power can be redeemed and restored to its proper God-given place in relationships and institutions. This book not only helps Christian leaders identify and resist abusive systems but also shows how they can use power to protect the vulnerable in their midst.

Book excerpt: Best known for having declared the death of God, Nietzsche was a thinker thoroughly absorbed in the Christian tradition in which he was born and raised. Yet while the atheist Nietzsche is well known, the pious Nietzsche is seldom recognized and rarely understood. Redeeming Nietzsche examines the residual theologian in the most vociferous of atheists. Giles Fraser demonstrates that although Nietzsche rejected God, he remained obsessed with the question of human salvation. Examining his accounts of art, truth, morality and eternity, Nietzsche's thought is revealed to be

Book excerpt: Interpersonal relationships are possible for humans because we are created in the image of a Trinitarian God. But if the Trinity is our model for relationships, why is the human condition rife with pain and evil? How are we to think correctly about fallen human relationships and our models for understanding them? Redeeming Sociology advocates a biblically informed model for human relationships—relationships rooted in the Trinitarian character of God, his governance of the world, and his redemption accomplished in Christ. Poythress examines how the breaking of relationships through sin leads to strife, murder, and oppression among human beings and sets cultures against one another. And he shows how these broken relationships are restored through the outworking of redemption in Christ. Though typical sociological models for interpersonal relationships may offer some valuable insights, they are handicapped by a fundamental misunderstanding of humanity. The biblical model that Poythress presents correctly diagnoses the problem of human relationships, so it can likewise prescribe a biblical solution that infuses new meaning and power into how we relate to others made in the image of God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Probing study of how literature can redeem the revelatory, redemptive powers of language. In this probing look at Alfred Döblin’s 1929 novel Berlin Alexanderplatz and the stories of W. G. Sebald, Redeeming Words offers a philosophical meditation on the power of language in literature. David Kleinberg-Levin draws on the critical theory of Benjamin and Adorno; the idealism and romanticism of Kant, Hegel, Hölderlin, Novalis, and Schelling; and the nineteenth- and twentieth-century thought of Nietzsche, Heidegger, and Derrida. He shows how Döblin and Sebald—writers with radically different styles working in different historical moments—have in common a struggle against forces of negativity and an aim to bring about in response a certain redemption of language. Kleinberg-Levin considers the fast-paced, staccato, and hard-cut sentences of Döblin and the ghostly, languorous, and melancholy prose fiction of Sebald to articulate how both writers use language in an attempt to recover and convey this utopian promise of happiness for life in a time of mourning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does the Bible say about marijuana? If it doesn’t directly address marijuana, how can Christians know what to make of the legalization of recreational cannabis and the advocacy of medical marijuana? In the past, Christians could easily answer the question of whether or not it was permissible to use cannabis by deferring to state prohibitions. We could simply say, “it’s against the law.” Today, that answer is no longer possible. Christians are now forced to do what they should have been doing all along: Think like disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ and bring to bear the wisdom of the sufficient Word of God. Since cannabis is not explicitly mentioned in the Bible, we must understand what it is and how it affects the user. We also must understand what the Bible says about discipleship, healing, suffering, and what it is to be human. Only then can we answer the critical questions regarding the recreational use and the medical use of cannabis. In Cannabis and the Christian, Todd Miles gives readers: Biblical wisdom applied to the question of recreational cannabis Biblical wisdom related to the medical use of cannabis A grid to think through other ethical questions that aren’t directly addressed in the Bible Confidence to respond to challenging issues standing on the sufficient Word of God

Book excerpt: Redeeming Beauty explores the richness of orthodox Christian tradition, both Western and Eastern, in matters of 'sacral aesthetics' - a term used to denote the foundations, production and experience of religiously relevant beauty. Aidan Nichols investigates five principal themes: the foundation of beauty in the natural order through divine creative action; explicitly 'evangelical' beauty as a quality of biblical revelation and notably at its climax in Christ; the legitimacy of making and venerating artworks; qualities of the self in relation to objective presentation of the religiously beautiful; and the difficulties of practising a sacral aesthetic, whether as producer or consumer, in an epoch when the visual arts themselves have left behind not only Church but for the greater part the public as well. The thought of theologians such as Augustine, Aquinas, Balthasar, Ratzinger, Bulgakov, Maritain and others is explored.

Book excerpt: In the last two decades, increasing openness towards Native people within the Church has become prevalent. Repentance and reconciliation between Non-Native and Native people was introduced in many Christian-conferences across North America. Many non-Native churches are becoming aware of the injustices of the past, concerning Native people, and are moved in their hearts towards them. They are endeavoring to make Native people feel welcome in their churches. They are beginning to recognize Native ministers/ministries and to realize the importance of their role within the Body of Christ. Objectives are weighed regarding how to reach the Native population with the Gospel of Christ. One of those objectives is to welcome traditions of Native culture within our churches. Although not all, numerous Christian organizations embrace this idea. Several non-Native ministries are confused about this matter. They welcome Native people and want to reach them with the love of Jesus, but are apprehensive with questionable elements of Native culture in general. By the same token, many Native ministers/ministries are deeply concerned when they see non-Native churches embrace those traditions. This book hopes to address this very issue and looks to answer the questions that many have regarding the redemption of Native culture through Christianity. This book is the result of my own spiritual journey and desire to communicate what I believe the Bible teaches about redemption and culture. It is my prayer that this book will also help you. Velma White is a Cree First Nations missionary who currently resides in Ft. Providence, Northwest Territories, Canada. She has achieved a Master's Degree in Theology. She ministers and travels to several Native villages across Northern and Western Canada with New Testament Outreach Ministries International. She is a worship leader and teaches at a Discipleship Training Bible School with N.T.O.M.I.

Book excerpt: Redeeming Truth is a follow-up volume to the first volume in this series, "Restoring Faith in Reason". "Restoring Faith in Reason" was published in 2003 and was the translation into English for the first time of the "Papal Encyclical Letter, Fides et Ratio". Where "Restoring Faith in Reason" considered the broad themes of the Fides et ratio, "Redeeming Truth" is a collection of essays focussing on the central proclamation of the Encyclical; that the truth which will set us free has come into the world and is present among us in its redeeming power. Into the midst of the crisis of our time, the authors and editors of this volume believe that the Encyclical is heard as a call for the fullest engagement of faith and reason with the needs of culture, in order that redeeming truth may be known again in the world. Central to all the essays in this collection is the question of redeeming truth, and each is designed to address this question fully. The essays are presented in a dialogue format with contributions under three headings of Philosophy, Truth and Nihilism. "Redeeming Truth" aims to serve a stimulus to open up further discussions and scholarly studies on the nature of redemption and truth.
