Book excerpt: Bulls in the China Shop is an engagingly anecdotal, lucidly written account of the tragicomic cultural and political misadventures that have plagues American commercial ventures over the past two decades in the People’s Republic of China. When diplomatic tensions between the two countries were eased in the 1970s, American businesses rushed to China, lured by the world’s largest national market. As they tried to introduce capitalism to China’s socialist society they soon discovered that the rules of business, as they understood them, did not apply. Chinese buyers placed huge orders for which they had no money to pay: Chinese marketing bore no relation to capitalist exigencies—playing cards were named “Maxipuke” (pu-ke: poker), designer men’s underwear, “Pansy”; million-dollar projects already underway were cancelled without warning. The Chinese, in turn, were astonished by the indiscretion of the Americans, who prized “directness” above all in negotiations and were at once brash and guileless in exposing weaknesses in their own bargaining positions. Like Mark Twain’s innocents, Americans were woefully ignorant of Chinese etiquette, and prone to embarrassing gaffes. And more: the Chinese found the American insistence on lengthy, detailed contracts fatuous, if not insulting. Bulls in the China Shop is a fascinating look at the uneasy commerce between American and China—between capitalism and socialism—and at the cultural, political, and historical significance of trade between the two nations.

Book excerpt: Healthier relationships and personal boundaries are just one word away with this inspirational guide on embracing the power of “no” Whether in love, work, family, or the world, the need to say no is sometimes imperative. And rather than accepting another transgression or being bullied, learning to set healthy boundaries is essential for our health and well-being. The Need to Say No includes helpful advice on how to say no without fear—and without injury to either party—so that you can set boundaries that lead to healthier relationships. Many people have to learn the skills to defend themselves from the inappropriate demands of others. Whether dealing with an abusive love partner, an inappropriate boss, a child that demands everything, or a societal condition that needs to stop, we have the power within ourselves to change the outcomes for the better: to be bullish without being bulldozed. The Need to Say No uses the metaphor of a bull to examine the behaviors of bullies and boundary violators, drawing from mythological, historical, and contemporary bull stories to identify ten archetypes of common aggressive personalities and how to deal with them effectively. Rich with quotes, illustrations, anecdotes, examples, tips, and more, The Need to Say No delivers a profound way to create peace at home, success at work, and real change in the world: by saying “no.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If we want to understand contemporary China, the key is through understanding the older generation. This is the generation in China whose life courses almost perfectly synchronised with the emergence and growth of the ‘New China’ under the rule of the Communist Party (1949). People in their 70s and 80s have double the life expectancy of their parents’ generation. The current eldest generation in Shanghai was born in a time when the average household could not afford electric lights, but today they can turn their lights off via their smartphone apps. Based on 16-month ethnographic fieldwork in Shanghai, Ageing with Smartphones in Urban China tackles the intersection between the ‘two revolutions’ experienced by the older generation in Shanghai: the contemporary smartphone-based digital revolution and the earlier communist revolutions. We find that we can only explain the smartphone revolution if we first appreciate the long-term consequences of these people’s experiences during the communist revolutions. The context of this book is a wide range of drastic social transformations in China, from the Cultural Revolution to the individualism and Confucianism in Digital China. Supported by detailed ethnographic material, the observations and analysis provide a panorama view of the social landscape of contemporary China, including topics such as the digital and everyday life, ageing and healthcare, intergenerational relations and family development, community building and grassroots organizations, collective memories and political attitudes among ordinary Chinese people.

Book excerpt: First in the gritty police series: “In the mold of Joseph Wambaugh . . . Characters that transcend cop-show stereotypes” (Booklist). Jack Warren, a young officer who’s been working in a virtually crime-free area, is now moving into Toronto’s notorious 51 Division. Suddenly, he’s entered a dangerous downtown world where drugs and prostitution are rampant—and he’s immediately thrown into a brutal war against a dealer intent on taking over the city’s trade. Warren soon discovers that no one is safe from the dealer’s quest for domination when the war turns horrifically personal. Working with the division’s elite major-crime unit, Warren learns there is an imperceptible yet enormous difference between the law and justice—and being a police officer and surviving in the 51. “Canadian policeman Pilkey writes from firsthand experience in his gritty procedural debut . . . Charts the stresses the dangerous job puts on Jack’s marriage, the us-against-them mentality that binds patrol cops, the off-duty cop parties to blow off steam, and the way the 51 can change good cops to bad.” —Publishers Weekly “Loaded with insider info and a cop’s-eye view of the city. Devotees of urban cop tales will eat this up.” —The Globe and Mail (Toronto)

Book excerpt: 2022 Edition! A lot is happening behind the scenes in the Rage Universe, and many stories are still left to be told. Most of these stories will be told in Worlds of Rage. • Serena: While Serena is settling at Deer Antler Inn, three mercenaries are planning to ask her a few questions about one of her pouches with a strange sign on it, and from the look on their faces, she’d better have the right answers. Will all this sit well with Helena, Clara, Jen, and Enyd; waitresses (among other things) at Deer Antler Inn who seem to have taken a liking to Serena? You’ll have to read this chapter to find out! • Arcana: Ennis, Baron of Mendor; Arlin, Count of Dubrios; Lorne, Count of Orbis; and Aldaro, Duke of Calbriga are plotting to dethrone King Kothas. To this end, Brann of Dubrios, Arlin’s right hand man, has been sent to recruit other rich and powerful lords in the Arthkan Kingdom, but something has happened to Brann, and instead of a new ally, the cabal seems to have made a new enemy. In order to gather as much information as possible, Ennis called Khain Alhazred, a powerful seer who can show images of the past, present and future. So far, the four lords know that Brann has joined a team of mercenaries who were going to Castle Arvenskar. It seems that on their way to the castle, the mercenaries encountered a tribe of picts, and that Brann gained the trust of his fellow mercenaries after the battle that ensued. Once at castle Arvenskar, Brann managed to have a meeting with its master: Lord Sibelius. • The Rage Universe isn’t limited to the European Kingdom of Arthkan. Events are beginning to unfold in Kusha, the African continent of the Rage Universe, which will ultimately have an impact on the Rage Series. The origin of these events will be told in the very first Rage Strip, Curse of the Panthermen, and it all begins in a tunnel, in the diamond mines of the Bathu City. M’jala, Bwerani and Hokwui are slaves working in the mines. After an accident which has set them free, Hokwui is slowly becoming the leader of a group of rebel slaves. M’jala and Bwerani are reluctantly following him. Meanwhile, outside of the mine… • Discover more Black and White and Color pages of Rage Bane of Demons, the original Rage Graphic Novel, in the Bonus Pages section!
