Book Synopsis Thermal Tolerance Determination of the Red-eared Slider, Trachemys Scripta Elegans by : Abigail Tatum
Download or read book Thermal Tolerance Determination of the Red-eared Slider, Trachemys Scripta Elegans written by Abigail Tatum and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Red-eared sliders (Trachemys scripta elegans) are considered one of the most abundant and successful invasive turtle species in the world. Currently, red-eared sliders are known to have reproducing populations on every continent with the exception of Antarctica. In areas where they have become established, red-eared sliders often outcompete and in some areas extirpate native turtle fauna. A key adaptation recognized in red-eared sliders is their ability to survive a wide range of environmental temperatures. Across their native range, the turtles are noted to survive long-term winter freezing temperatures, as well as prolonged exposure to summer temperature extremes. Although temperature plays an important role in shaping red-eared slider ecology and distribution, relatively little is known about their thermal requirements. This study is the first to use Critical and Chronic Thermal Methodology to define the red-eared slider's thermal niche. The chronic maximum temperature was 43°C ± 0.3, while the chronic minimum was 18°C ± 0.3. Critical Thermal Maximum increased in correlation to acclimation temperature, 41.8°C ± 0.3 at 15°C, 43.2°C ± 0.3 at 22°C, 44.1°C ± 0.5 at 28°C, and 45.7°C ± 0.2 when acclimated to 35°C. Critical Thermal Minimum also increased in relation to the acclimation temperature, -0.04°C ± 0.3 at 15°C, 2.7°C ± 0.1 at 22°C, 3.3°C ± 0.3 at 28°C, and 5.1°C ± 0.2 when acclimated at 35°C. Using the results of this study, the thermal polygon of red-eared sliders was able to be quantified and paves the way for future thermal studies in this species.

Book Synopsis The Red-Eared Slider Turtle , Trachemys Scripta Elegans by : Anzela Khan
Download or read book The Red-Eared Slider Turtle , Trachemys Scripta Elegans written by Anzela Khan and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Red-eared slider turtles (REST), Trachemys scripta elegans (Neuwied, 1839) are turtles that are commonly kept at homes as pets. They are semi-aquatic by nature, found in the warm waters and are strong underwater swimmers. They are basically omnivores. The younger turtles are more dependent on animal protein, while the adults lean towards a vegetarian diet. The males are a little smaller in size than the females, but they have sharp claws on the front legs. Their tails are also longer than those of the females. The male reaches it sexual maturity between 2-4 years and the female up to 3-4 years. The females come ashore and deposit 80-200 eggs. They may be silent carriers of Salmonella, which is very contagious for young children in the house. They are also found to carry protozoan and bacterial infections with them. The carapace is dark green with yellow markings, and the plastron (under shell) is yellow with some dark rings, blotches or swirls. Determine a turtles' age, have to count the scutes on a turtle's carapace. Pond turtles are found throughout most of the USA, Mexico and Central America. They are also found in South America, Australia and most of the parts of Asia.
Book Synopsis Herpetological Osteopathology by : Bruce M. Rothschild
Download or read book Herpetological Osteopathology written by Bruce M. Rothschild and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-05 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As scientific analysis of testable hypotheses has replaced the speculative approach to study of bone disease in recent and fossil amphibians and reptiles, the field has advanced from simply reporting observations to analyzing their implications. This process is predicated upon a reproducible data base which explains/diagnoses the nature of bony alterations and a secure review of the literature. Thereby hangs the rub. The herpetological literature are difficult to access (let alone read) and are scattered through many prominent and eclectic journals and in the lay literature. While older diagnoses often have not stood the test of time, the clarity of report descriptions usually allows confident identification of the underlying pathology.
Book Synopsis Biological Invasions and Its Management in China by : Fanghao Wan
Download or read book Biological Invasions and Its Management in China written by Fanghao Wan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-25 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book discusses invasive-species problems in agriculture, forests and aquatic ecosystems, highlighting the invasive mechanisms and management of the selected invasive species. Biological invasion has become a serious global ecological and economic problem that deserves particular attention from both government officials and scientists. This volume focuses on three key scientific areas: 1) population establishment and spreading mechanisms of the selected invasive species; 2) ecology adaptation, population growth, expansion and evolution of invasive species; and 3) impact of bio-invasion on the ecosystem structure and function at community and ecosystem levels. The presented research will result in techniques for better management of invasive species.
