Book Synopsis The Theory of Categories by : F.C. Brentano
Download or read book The Theory of Categories written by F.C. Brentano and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the definitive statement of Franz Brentano's views on meta physics. It is made up of essays which were dictated by Brentano during the last ten years of his life, between 1907 and 1917. These dictations were assembled and edited by Alfred Kastil and first published by the Felix Meiner Verlag in 1933 under the title Kategorienlehre. Kastil added copious notes to Brentano's text. These notes have been included, with some slight omissions, in the present edition; the bibliographical references have been brought up to date. Brentano's approach to philosophy is unfamiliar to many contemporay readers. I shall discuss below certain fundamental points which such readers are likely to find the most difficult. I believe that once these points are properly understood, then what Brentano has to say will be seen to be of first importance to philosophy. THE PRIMACY OF THE INTENTIONAL To understand Brentano's theory of being, one must realize that he appeals to what he calls inner perception for his paradigmatic uses of the word "is". For inner perception, according to Brentano, is the source of our knowledge of the nature of being, just as it is the source of our knowledge of the nature of truth and of the nature of good and evil. And what can be said about the being of things that are not apprehended in inner perception can be understood only by analogy with what we are able to say about ourselves as thinking subjects.

Book Synopsis The Police Officer's Guide to Operating and Surviving in Low-light and No-light Conditions by : Tony L. Jones
Download or read book The Police Officer's Guide to Operating and Surviving in Low-light and No-light Conditions written by Tony L. Jones and published by Charles C. Thomas Publisher. This book was released on 2002 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reminds the reader that many police shootings occur during diminished light, and with few exceptions, officers do not receive enough training in these conditions; in addition, recommendations are made for officers to use senses other than vision, teamwork, and technological innovations to increase an officer's chance of success when working in dim-light or no-light conditions. The majority of crimes and officer shootings occur at night in diminished light or no-light settings. The Federal Bureau of Investigation reports that during a 9-year period (1985-1994), almost 63 percent of police officer deaths occurred between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. During these hours, it is difficult for officers to accurately identify an alleged suspect's face easily or identify any weapons he or she may be in possession of. Add stress and an increased heart rate to an already tense situation and it is easy to understand the need for additional training under these conditions. The dark is fraught with peril and danger, but increased training can alleviate stress and increase proficiency. Moreover, officers can rely upon other senses and additional training can help facilitate decision-making under these difficult circumstances. Technological advances and team techniques can also be incorporated into officer training. Directional microphones, night vision and thermal imaging devices and infrared lights are a few of the technological advances that may aid officer shootings during dim-light or no-light environments.

Book excerpt: Features an audio read-along! With a simple, witty story and free-spirited illustrations, Peter H. Reynolds entices even the stubbornly uncreative among us to make a mark -- and follow where it takes us. Her teacher smiled. "Just make a mark and see where it takes you." Art class is over, but Vashti is sitting glued to her chair in front of a blank piece of paper. The words of her teacher are a gentle invitation to express herself. But Vashti can’t draw - she’s no artist. To prove her point, Vashti jabs at a blank sheet of paper to make an unremarkable and angry mark. "There!" she says. That one little dot marks the beginning of Vashti’s journey of surprise and self-discovery. That special moment is the core of Peter H. Reynolds’s delicate fable about the creative spirit in all of us.

The twentieth century brough new discoveries in physics and astronomy that led scientists to develop the Big Bang theory—a detailed idea that describes how our universe formed. According to this theory, the entire universe began in a single instant, in an unimaginably powerful explosion. That explosion created all time and space, all matter and energy—everything in the universe as we know it. This book tells the story of how scientists' observations of the stars led to the development of the Big Bang Theory.

Book Synopsis Besides Loving the Beasts by : H. S. Pabla
Download or read book Besides Loving the Beasts written by H. S. Pabla and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2021-08-19 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India is not India without its wild animals. However, conservation of wildlife leads to misery for millions of people. It conflicts with the constitutional guarantee of people's right to life and property. It amounts to knowingly causing death, injury or property damage, a crime under the Indian Penal Code. Successful conservation spells doom and gloom for more people. Preserving dangerous animals costs the country billions but we are dead against earning anything from this indulgence. All in the name of our love for wildlife. Wildlife corridors, the darling of the nature lovers of India, are like an expensive antibiotic with serious side effects and no guarantee of cure. We invite ever more devastating fires by preventing benign and benevolent forest fires. We have derecognized all protected areas and reserve forests through the Forest Rights Act. The way we do our wildlife conservation is perplexing. Such conservation is neither sustainable nor desirable. H.S. Pabla, former Chief Wild Life Warden of Madhya Pradesh, says that conservation of wildlife can be and must be done differently. It has to be based on commonsense, pragmatism, science and sensible laws.
