The day when the civilized world sets to work to pick out the criminals from the barbarians, the criminals responsible for the atrocities and infamies committed by the savage foe. The documents for the accusation furnished by the accused themselves - a most valuable contribution to the sombre study of German criminology - establish beyond doubt that it is on the leaders and not on the men that the heaviest responsibility will fall. The hanging evidence against several of the commanding German Generals in Belgium is overwhelming - their proclamations to their victims and their orders to their troops contain damning proofs that they are morally and legally responsible for the slaughter of hundreds of helpless civilians, men, women and children. Accusations of instigation to murder, even of the wounded, are brought against officers of all ranks by their men in their note-books - now in the hands of the Belgian, French and English authorities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Red Cross, in the Great War IT is the effort of this book to set forth the scope, char acter and effect of the work of the American Red Cross during the Great War. When the war closed more than thirty million Americans were enrolled in the organiza tion. Some of these were in foreign fields; most of them were at home. But, in one way or another, they were all helping. All of them working together made up the American Red Cross. Stories of special sacrifice or devotion cannot be given here and yet few organizations have so closely touched the great currents of human life. Detailed narratives will accordingly follow this book. I have sought here to sum marize the work of the thirty millions as a whole. To characterize the Red Cross work of any man or woman. Or to attempt to describe it with any regard to proper perspective, would be invidious if not impossible. I have therefore omitted the mention of names. The highest satisfaction any worker in the Red Cross can derive from his work is from the fact that the work itself was well done. The files of the War Council have been freely drawn upon in the preparation of this book. And I want to make special acknowledgment to every member of the force at headquarters. And to the special correspondents and staffs of our foreign commissions, who seemingly have vied with one another in supplying me, either orally or in writing, with material without which the scope of this book could not be what it is. Indeed it may accurately be said that the book itself is a product of the American Red Cross. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Red Cross in This War Two years ago the Red Cross member ship was hardly more than twenty-five thousand; today it is twenty-three million. Two years ago its income for war relief was trivial; this last year it was well over money given twice because given quickly, money skillfully expended by experts, with every penny vouched for and recorded with absolute accuracy and fidelity. And I believe that America is ready to refill the Red Cross treasury whenever the right moment comes to ask for it. America's heart has been deeply touched by the miseries of others. But do we Americans appreciate the seriousness of our own position? I think not. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Red Cross in Greece The American Red Cross has maintained a mission in Greece for a period of nine months. During that period the uniforms of the American Red Cross officer and of the American Red Cross trained nurse and social worker have become familiar to a large proportion of the Greek people; and the people of certain sections of the country have been able to observe with their own eyes the business upon which the American organization has been engaged. We need no introduction, for example, to the inhabitants of Eastern Macedonia and the larger Aegean islands; and the people in Athens, in a general way, know the purpose of the mission. But probably the Greek people as a whole have been somewhat at a loss to understand why the American Red Cross was here - what were the motives and objects of the mission; and, naturally, they have had little opportunity of learning what we have actually been doing in Greece - the nature and extent of our undertakings. It has, therefore, seemed to me, as head of the mission, proper to issue this statement about the American Red Cross Commission to Greece, and to review briefly, the work upon which we have been engaged and which has now been brought to a conclusion. For the mission will have failed in one of its objects if, as a result of our sojourn in Greece, the Greek people and the American people are not drawn together in closer bonds of sympathy, understanding and friendship. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Red Cross: The Treaty of Geneva, and Its Adoption by the United States In placing this pamphlet before the public it is the desire of the committee to make known, as far as possible, not only the nature and objects of the organization known as the Red Cross, as existing in other countries, but also the little which has thus far been attempted in our own. It has therefore been deemed advisable to embody in this a smaller pam phlet, issued by our president as early as the winter of 1878, entitled What the Red Cross Is, the design on her part being to introduce the work to the attention of the people and their representatives in Congress. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Red Cross in France He arrives at Boulogne, and before he lands he can count sixty-seven Red Cross ambulances packed on the further quay. He is met at the gangway by a man in a Red Cross uniform, who takes him in charge in his badly battered motor, and lands him at the front door of the head quarters of the e.r.c. At that Port. These head quarters are an old French hotel, converted for the purpose, every part of it full of the most incessant activity, and he takes his orders from the Commissioner. They amount substantially to this, that whatever the Red Cross wants in any direction anywhere he is to be ready to do it, or to help to do it, as far as he can. He takes a view of the stores, which contain everything under Heaven that soldiers, sick or wounded, can by any possibility need, from bedsteads to feather dusters, the Red Cross being ready to furnish everything that the War Office cannot be expected to furnish, and can in ten hours, as the author claims, in case of emergency supply to the sufferers what the War Office would take ten weeks to procure. He shows how the Red Cross accepts the services of men who are refused for the regular army for physical or other causes, or because not up to or far beyond the fighting age, and how eagerly and zealously all these perform the parts assigned them. He shows the wonderful work of the Red Cross ambulances, how they start out to meet the ambulance trains arriving from the front, going at breakneck speed over the rough roads, and how they return loaded with sick and wounded. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the American Red Cross in Italy American reader something of that finer and more dis criminating appreciation of Italian character that our workers in the field have invariably gained. The story of the Red Cross in Italy I shall tell in a strictly impersonal way. There will be no attempt to ap portion praise, and, indeed, as far as it is possible to do so, names will be omitted altogether. This procedure is not only in harmony with the spirit of modesty that has characterized the work of the Commission from the begin ning; it is also dictated by necessity. Only the Keeper of all records could justly distribute credits, and there is no doubt that on His books some of our humblest work ers will come in for the highest meed of praise. I have in mind one Red Cross worker who has been buried for ten months in what to the casual tourist would appear to be one of the most Godforsaken towns in Italy poor, dilapi dated, far from the railroad and out of touch with the world. Here, cut off from all communication with her kind, she has performed her modest task, taking no vacation, daily on the job from early morning until late in the evening. Happy in her work, she has come to love the simple people with whom her lot is cast, and should you commiserate her, she will reply with a smile: Human nature is pretty much alike wherever you find it. By her tact and devotion she has won the affection of the people and filled with courage and a new loyalty hearts that were wavering and made of a disloyal town one of the most loyal. There is no glory and no fame in obscure service like this. But such a faithful servant desires no glory. She is the spirit of the Red Cross in the field, and she has many names, many which I know, many that I could not give. Therefore I name her not. Let me simply, once for all, clean the score by paying tribute to her wherever in Italy she may be hidden, and to all the army of Red Cross workers in Rome and in the field, high and low, whose devotion has made the work in Italy a success.
