Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Art and technology have been converging rapidly in the past few years; an important example of this convergence is the alliance of neuroscience with aesthetics, which has produced the new field of neuroaesthetics. Irving Massey examines this alliance, in large part to allay the fears of artists and audiences alike that brain science may "explain away" the arts. The first part of the book shows how neuroscience can enhance our understanding of certain features of art. The second part of the book illustrates a humanistic approach to the arts; it is written entirely without recourse to neuroscience, in order to show the differences in methodology between the two approaches. The humanistic style is marked particularly by immersion in the individual work and by evaluation, rather than by detachment in the search for generalizations. In the final section Massey argues that, despite these differences, once the reality of imagination is accepted neuroscience can be seen as the collaborator, not the inquisitor, of the arts.

Book excerpt: Street-smart and straightforward police chief Cuddy Mangum and his refined homicide detective Justin Savile V are determined to keep their town's cultural, political and racial divisions stable...even peaceful. But when a young black activist is murdered while in the process of fighting for his brother's freedom from death row, the lines keeping Hillston, North Carolina, in balance start to crumble. Thrust into a dirty political campaign and torn between his morals and his love for the wealthy and beautiful wife of an up-and-coming politician, Cuddy must uncover the secrets that lie in his own backyard. From high-powered and elegant country club ballrooms to dark and dangerous bar room corners, Malone weaves a mystery of plot and place where the difference between good and evil and right and wrong sometimes become indistinct.

Book excerpt: Filled with poignancy, humor and eccentric revelations, The Delectable Mountains is a hilarious romp through the melodramatic tumult of growing up and falling in love. Life seems to have little to offer Devin Donahue at the age of 23. Graduation thrust him out of college against his will, and the love of his life just left him to marry his older brother. With a broken heart and no direction to speak of, Devin pounces on his first opportunity to skip town—an invitation to help run a summer theater in Colorado with his high-school sweetheart. Upon arrival, Devin is shoved into a torrential melodrama of barroom brawls, outrageous love triangles and the worst performance of Hedda Gabler ever produced. He is sucked into the action by myriad batty characters, including a maniacal political dramatist, an emaciated director riddled with d.t.'s and a bipolar actor whose luck—and money—are about to run out. All the while Devin must fumble through his own awkward attempts at love—and somehow manage to come out on the other side.

Book excerpt: Award-winning author Michael Malone's The Last Noel is a beautiful gift to American fiction. In a deeply touching tale, The Last Noel captures the exuberance and poignance of a lasting friendship between a man and a woman from very different backgrounds. Noni Tilden and Kaye King grow up and grow close as their lives come dramatically together through four decades of tumultuous change in a small southern town. The story begins in 1963 when Kaye first meets Noni on the eve of their seventh birthdays. On that Christmas Eve, Kaye climbs through her bedroom window to invite her to come sledding with him in a rare southern snowfall. Over the next thirty years on twelve days of Christmas, they meet to share the passion, the sacrifice and the romance of a lifetime. At once exquisitely written and tearfully joyful, The Last Noel is one of the great love stories of our time. Praise for The Last Noel: "Malone's latest novel reaffirms his brilliance in crafting carefully plotted fiction with a literary burnish, most often through Southern manners and intrigue."—Denver Post "A warm, engaging love story."—Booklist "Malone writes with such quiet authority and clear understanding of the world his characters inhabit that the story strikes deep emotional chords."—Washington Post Book World A Book Sense 76 Top 10 Selection

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "There's humor and action aplenty, but Four Corners is also a warmhearted look at how we love and forgive. Five hundred and forty-four pages never seemed so short"—People, 4 stars, People Pick The Four Corners of the Sky is master storyteller Michael Malone's new novel of love, secrets, and the mysterious bonds of families. Malone brings characters to life as only he can, exploring the questions that defy easy answers: Is love a choice or a calling? Why do the ties of family bind so tightly? And is forgiveness a gift to others...or a gift we give ourselves? In small towns between the North Carolina Piedmont and the coast the best scenery is often in the sky. On flat sweeps of red clay and scrub pine the days move monotonously, safely, but above, in the blink of an eye, dangerous clouds can boil out of all four corners of the sky...The flat slow land starts to shiver and anything can happen. In such a storm, on Annie Peregrine's seventh birthday, her father gave her the airplane and minutes later drove out of her life. Thus begins an enchanting novel that bursts with energy from the first pages, and sweeps you off on a journey of unforgettable characters, hilarious encounters, and haunting secrets. Praise for The Four Corners of the Sky: "Devoted Michael Malone fans have been waiting more than twenty years for another Handling Sin, perhaps the greatest road novel since Tom Jones. The wait is over..."— Bill Ott, editor-in-chief, Booklist "Secrets and intrigues among the honeysuckle: a sun-washed yarn of the New South, affectionately told." —Kirkus starred review "The Four Corners of the Sky is the best thing I have read in years and you can imagine how much I read. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this anthology of creative nonfiction, twenty-eight writers set out to discover what they know, and don't know, about the person they call Mother. Celebrated writers Samia Serageldin and Lee Smith have curated a diverse and insightful collection that challenges stereotypes about mothers and expands our notions of motherhood in the South. The mothers in these essays were shaped, for good and bad, by the economic and political crosswinds of their time. Whether their formative experience was the Great Depression or the upheavals of the 1970s, their lives reflected their era and influenced how they raised their children. The writers in Mothers and Strangers explore the reliability of memory, examine their family dynamics, and come to terms with the past. In addition to the editors, contributors include Belle Boggs, Marshall Chapman, Hal Crowther, Clyde Edgerton, Marianne Gingher, Jaki Shelton Green, Sally Greene, Stephanie Elizondo Griest, Jacquelyn Dowd Hall, Eldridge "Redge" Hanes, Lynden Harris, Randall Kenan, Phillip Lopate, Michael Malone, Frances Mayes, Jill McCorkle, Melody Moezzi, Elaine Neil Orr, Steven Petrow, Margaret Rich, Omid Safi, James Seay, Alan Shapiro, Bland Simpson, Sharon K. Swanson, and Daniel Wallace.

Distraught at the loss of her only remaining family member, she begins the arduous task of sorting out her mother’s affairs and coping with her grief. The more she digs into her mother’s tumultuous past, the more she realizes how little her mother shared. She follows one clue and traces her mother’s life when she served in the British Army in the London Theatre of War. Through Harmonie’s narrative, the story turns to the war-torn streets of London. There, Helen’s relationships change her life. Would her sense of independence and courage be enough for her to survive failed romances, danger, and death—and Helen’s attempts to shed her Cockney roots and family secrets for a better life? Can Harmonie connect to the real spirit of her mother—and will she find peace in finally letting go of a woman she has only just begun to understand?

Book excerpt: "In nineteen sixty-one the Cold War glowed red-hot." Twenty-one year old college student Jimmy Donlin accepted a job offer for a trip "down south," filling a slot left vacant by a technician lost in the Bay of Pigs Invasion a few weeks earlier. Three weeks later he found himself low man on the totem pole of a nine man team of "independent contractors" and in way over his head. Camped on a sandy beach in Panama, their backs to a tangled rain forest, they are confronted by Cuban insurgents, Russian gunboats and a team of American photographers who thought Donlin's group was there to provide cooking and laundry services. Then their quarry showed up and events turned deadly serious.
