Book excerpt: The world of recycling can be conveniently divided into two parts: single and multistream. Single-stream recycling directs all recyclable material to one container and is separated at the recycling facility. Multi-stream recycling directs the recyclables to material-specific containers at the curb where the homeowner is required to properly sort. With both methods, contamination is a challenge and a barrier, but as the recycling industry shifts to the singlestream mode, the problems associated with contamination are magnified and make the process more expensive and redirects recycled material to landfills. Although technological advances have the potential to reduce contamination, smart machinery is one part of the solution. This study aims to examine the other part, the human factors that cause contamination within the individual systems and to devise both a more intuitive recycling process and a public education program to complement that process. However, the current, complicated array of potentially recyclable materials undermines the process, exacerbates contamination and erodes public confidence in the efficacy of recycling in general. Therefore, a recycling strategy that focuses significant emphasis on consumer output may be ultimately counterproductive. In this study, Newport News recycling audit's data is utilized to investigate the contamination issues in the community. Analyzing and comparing Newport News recycling audit's data to the Census demographic map has provided an idea of where the contamination indeed lies. Results of this analysis assist in developing guidelines and recommendations to mitigate recycling contaminations in these specific neighborhoods. The most effective approach proposed by this study include an extensive public education initiative and a manufacturer-based system that identifies recyclable material at its source.
