The purpose of this study was: 1) to hear the voices of African American male teachers in a selected urban school district; 2) to identify the factors that contribute to their job acceptance decisions; 3) to gain an in-depth understanding of why teachers chose teaching as a profession; 4) to determine and understand the nature of the professional lives of these teachers; and finally, 5) to advance our existing knowledge base in attracting African American males to our nation's classrooms. The data collection process consisted of one-on-one, open-ended interview questions with six highly qualified African American male public school teachers in a K-12 school district in the Southern region of the United States. The key themes which emerged through data analysis include: (1) nobility associated with the teaching profession; (2) compassion associated with the teaching profession; (3) stability associated with the teaching profession; (4) family and community influences; (5) life experiences and (6) I was not recruited: I chose this district. Ethic of Care and Critical Race theoretical frameworks were the foundation for the study.

This lack of representation has implications for understanding, interacting with and educating the growing population of students of African descent in public schools. In addition, all students benefit from experiencing African American males in classrooms for cultural and educational reasons. For these reasons, recruiting and retaining African American males for careers in education is imperative. This dissertation investigated the reasons African American males do not select careers in education given the history of this career and its prominence for people of African descent. Using Critical Race Theory (CRT) as a theoretical framework, this phenomenological study addressed barriers that African American men may face in pursuing a career in education. Six African American male educators (elementary, middle and high school levels) from three school districts in rural Arkansas were interviewed to ascertain their views on why African American males were not pursuing degrees and careers in education. A qualitative analysis of participant interviews explored economic, academic, social and cultural factors affecting black males in deciding to enter the teaching profession. Specifically, African American males described a lack of positive African American male role models, financial hardship as a deterrent to college enrollment, and expectation of inadequate professional salary. The study focused on five emergent themes that elucidate a more complete understanding of barriers faced by African American male educators: (1) Stereotypes of African American males; (2) Motivations to teach; (3) Barriers faced by African American men in becoming teachers; (4) Specific problems encountered in the classroom; and (5) Encouraging other African American men to teach. Unfortunately, over the past five decades, two major trends have become clearly evident in the Black community: (a) the decline of the academic achievement levels of Black students and (b) the disappearance of Black teachers, particularly Black males. Today, of the 3.5 million teachers in America’s classrooms (AACTE, 2010) only 8% are Black teachers, and approximately 2% of these teachers are Black males (NCES, 2010). Over the past few decades, the Black teaching force in the U.S. has dropped significantly (Lewis, 2006; Lewis, Bonner, Byrd, & James, 2008; Milner & Howard, 2004), and this educational crisis shows no signs of ending in the near future. As the population of Black students in K-12 schools in the U. S. continue to rise—currently over 16% of students in America’s schools are Black (NCES, 2010)—there is an urgent need to increase the presence of Black educators. The overall purpose of this edited volume is to stimulate thought and discussion among diverse audiences (e.g., policymakers, practitioners, and educational researchers) who are concerned about the performance of Black students in our nation’s schools, and to provide evidence-based strategies to expand our nation’s pool of Black teachers. To this end, it is our hope that this book will contribute to the teacher education literature and will inform the teacher education policy and practice debate.

The National Assessment of Educational Progress reports that 88 percent of African-American eighth graders read below grade level, compared to 62 percent of Caucasian eighth graders. The goal of the book is to afford each reader the opportunity to cultivate their educational outlook on African-American males and provide their schools with effective, culturally responsive reform. The overarching goal for this book is to bring enlightenment to a dark cloud that hovers over the success or lack of success of the African-American male student.

The study sought to determine: (1) the perception of A/A teachers concerning their K-12 teaching experiences when disaggregated by the number of years of teaching, (2) their perception of why they went into teaching when disaggregated by the number of years of teaching, (3) their perception of the need for A/A male teachers, and (4) their perception of value and accomplishments as A/A male teachers in the classroom. This study utilized a qualitative phenomenological design and was based upon Maslow's (1970) hierarchy of needs and Herzberg, Mausner, and Snyderman's (1959) motivation-hygiene theory. The conceptual framework was supported through the research literature of Moran, Woolfolk, and Hoy (2001), Kimbrough and Salomone (1993), Leong (1995), and Milner and Howard (2004), which focuses on the "motivational factors" leading to A/A males selecting teaching as a career. Utilizing a qualitative interview design, individual interviews, along with a focus group session, 14 participants were identified, with 7 participants agreeing to participate in this study. The researcher utilized the NVivo 8 program to categorize the data and identify recurring themes as well as to assist in analyzing, shaping, and managing the data generated from this research study. Findings in this study revealed that all participants agreed, regardless of their years of teaching, that there were not enough A/A males in K-12 education, that there was value in having A/A males as K-12 teachers, that they enjoyed sharing their experiences with their students, and that the level of pay served as a deterrent to A/A males going inot the teaching field. This study adds to the current body of literature by exposing additional motivational factors that influence A/A males to select teacher education as a career. Findings in this study may prove to be invaluable to teacher education programs and educational leaders as they redesign, promote, and seek ways to sustain A/A males in the teaching profession.

Book excerpt: In 2011, the U.S. Secretary of Education launched a national campaign urging black males to choose teaching as a career with the ambitious goal of adding 80,000 black male public school teachers by 2015 (Teach Campaign, 2011). This campaign, coupled with recent reports, suggests students should encounter a wide diversity of teachers (Boser, 2011; Byrd et al., 2011). Arguments have been made that teacher diversity should include gender, race, and socio-economic status (Angus & Oliveira, 2012). This study focused on an important aspect of this problem: African American males. This mixed-methods sequential descriptive study inquired about effective strategies for recruiting African American males into undergraduate teacher-education programs. The study employed multiple data collection methods: reviewing the literature, accessing institutional websites and other online recruitment materials; sending an inquiry letter, and interviewing those responsible for recruiting prospective teacher-education undergraduates. Four research questions guided the study. 1. What strategies are presented in the literature as best practices for recruiting males and African American males, in particular, as undergraduates into teacher-education programs? 2. What strategies do institutions use to recruit males and African American males, in particular, into undergraduate teacher-education programs? 3. What do program leaders perceive as effective strategies, and barriers to those strategies, for recruiting males and African American males into undergraduate teacher-education programs? 4. Based on the research results, what effective strategies and barriers to those strategies are identified for attracting African American males into undergraduate teacher-education programs? The literature review disclosed that the Call Me Mister programs were the most active and successful in attracting African American males into teacher-education. The websites of a random sample of undergraduate teacher-education programs (N=1,500) revealed that few traditional colleges and universities (2%) used their websites to attract undergraduate males (1%). The interviews (N=7) identified several effective strategies in use: offering institutional scholarships; finding other financial support; recruiting actively; forming community partnerships; achieving a critical mass; and seeking internal institutional support. Building upon these strategies, a series of recommendations are put forth for leaders of teacher-education programs to consider.

Parents who undervalue education, and a mass media that peppers youth with the quick, shallow rewards of hip-hop lifestyle, are steering alarming numbers of boys down a dead-end path." Erik Eckholm explained that "terrible schools, absent parents, racism, the decline in blue collar jobs, and a subculture that glorifies swagger over work have all been cited as causes of the deepening ruin of black male youth." They also appear to be a large part of the reason why "nationwide, the percentage of black male teachers is 2.4 percent," according to the National Education Association in 2008. Rather than becoming teachers, Bernard Carver explained that "a growing and alarming number of African American males are either become victims of negative circumstances (e.g., dropping out of school at an early age, being sent to penal institutions, or succumbing to urban violence) or becoming participants in activities that are counterproductive to their development (e.g., involving drugs and gangs)."Black males are generally alienated as students by and from the American public education, and, as a result, are also alienated as potential educators. Janice Hale explained that "African American [male] children do not enter school disadvantaged, they leave disadvantaged. There's nothing wrong with the children but there is clearly something wrong with what happens to them in school." For one, the absence of Black male role models in the classroom is serious obstacle to the education of Black boys. "In order to be a Black man, you have to see a Black man," wrote Jawanza Kunjufu, who estimated that Black men make up less than 2 percent of all public school teachers. "Without Black men role models, our boys learn to see school as for girls and sissies."In addition, Tawannah Allen wrote that "African American male students have traditionally received the most negative treatment by public educators" and, consequently, chronically underachieve academically. Welsing confirmed that "it is little wonder that 98% of all of the Black male children I talk with, who have reached the junior high school level, hate school. Schools and their personnel, like all other aspects of the racist system, do their share to alienate Black males from maximal functioning."
