Download or read book The Lost Words written by Pete May and published by Biteback Publishing. This book was released on 2012-10-15 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philip Howard's legendary 'Lost Words' column has been appearing weekly in The Times for many years, wittily illuminating a raft of the most obscure, esoteric words the English language has to offer. At the same time, his 'Word Watching' puzzles have provided readers with the chance to pit their lexicographical skill against his tongue-in-cheek multiple-choice conundrums. This unique collection, bringing together the very best of all these, is a feast for word lovers. Here we can lament the disappearance of words like 'accismus' (an insincere and feigned refusal of something that is earnestly desired), and wonder why we ever thought we could do without 'zoilus' (a censorious, malignant or envious critic). And, once we have completed our journey through the dictionary entries time has forgotten, there's more fun to be had, as we ponder whether having a 'tirrit' means one is in possession of a trumpet, throwing a fit or the proud owner of a type of bird, and if the charge of being 'spissid' is a comment on one's girth, sobriety or resemblance to a javelin, either literal or metaphorical. Endlessly fascinating, Lost Words continues Philip Howard's amusing and informative tour of words that enrich the English language and would otherwise have been lost forever.
Download or read book Q Fever written by Jim C. Williams and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1991-10-23 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Q fever is a zoonotic infectious disease caused by Coxiella burnetii, which infects a broad range of hosts. This volume presents critical reviews of the biological aspects of C. burnetii. Topics covered include C. burnetii's place in the microbial world through a comparison with other microorganisms that are phylogenetically related or share phenotypic traits; intrinsic properties of Coxiella with respect to infectivity, virulence, and pathogenecity; past and current methods for the isolation, amplification, and purification of C. Burnetii; obligate acidophily; metabolic capabilities, with emphasis on intermediary metabolism, macromolecular synthesis, and protein export; and human immune responses to bacterial components during acute and chronic infection by C. Burnetii. Other fascinating topics about C. Burnetii include antigens, virulence factors, and biological response modifiers; ultrastructure; genetics; cloning and expression; and C. burnetii in the U.S.S.R. and China. Epidemiologists, molecular biologists, microbiologists, and other researchers interested in Q fever and C. burnetii should consider this book an essential reference resource.

Book Synopsis Report on antimalarial drug efficacy, resistance and response by : World Health Organization
Download or read book Report on antimalarial drug efficacy, resistance and response written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2020-08-31 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Resistance to antimalarial drugs challenges our ability to save lives threatened by malaria, and to eliminate the burden that malaria places on individuals and societies. This burden is substantial, with malaria having caused an estimated 228 million cases and 405 000 deaths in 2018 (1). The Global technical strategy for malaria 2016–2030, adopted at the World Health Assembly in 2015, highlights the potential of antimalarial drug resistance to seriously weaken the effectiveness of malaria responses and erode the gains achieved (2). Monitoring antimalarial drug efficacy and resistance is important for the early detection of resistance, which in turn enables timely action to prevent its spread and limit the impact on global health. Measurement of drug efficacy and resistance in malaria is complex. Studies of clinical and parasitological outcomes are the main sources of information on which national malaria control programmes base treatment policy; however, other studies are needed to confirm drug resistance if suspected." -- Introduction.

Book Synopsis Herpes Simplex Virus by : Barry T. Rouse
Download or read book Herpes Simplex Virus written by Barry T. Rouse and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although upstaged by the tragic appearance of the human immunodeficiency virus, herpes simplex viruses (HSV) types 1 and 2 continue to be major human pathogens against which we lack acceptable vaccines or other means of immunological control. The virus is large and complex, coding for 70 or more proteins. Although many mysteries remain to be unraveled, our knowledge base regarding genomic organization, gene expression and regulation, pathogenesis, and immune recog nition of component parts is quite considerable. Indeed, meet ings devoted entirely to herpesviruses are conspicuous by their frequency and excellent, yet sometimes exclusive, attendance. The purpose of this volume is to compile in a single book a series of reviews by leading investigators that deal with various aspects of virus-host interactions and which hopefully will pro vide clues as to how to best manage HSV from an immunobio logical perspective. Ultimately, one anticipates that a full under standing of virus-host interaction will lead to strategies useful for the prevention and control of HSV. The state of current progress with conventional vaccines is presented, as is a chapter on intracellular immunization. This latter novel approach to virus infections comes at approximately the bicentenary of Jenner's introduction of a successful conventional immunization strategy.
