Download or read book Recreating Men written by Bob Pease and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2000-02-02 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most central issues for women′s prospects for equality is whether man can and will change. Changing the social relations of gender will involve changing men′s subjectives as well as their daily practices. This book asks whether this is possible. Bob Pease examines how men, who are supportive of feminism, are responding to the feminist challenge, through an exploration of their experiences and dilemmas in trying to live out their feminist commitment and resist hegemonic forms of masculinity. The book is driven by practical as well as theoretical concerns, and aims to develop strategies that will promote the process of change towards equality in gender relations. Drawing on a critical postmodern theoretical framework, Pease argues that it is possible for men to reposition themselves in patriarchal discourses and to reformulate their interests in challenging gender domination. Recreating Men is an invaluable reading for academics and students of gender studies, and of interest to students of sociology, psychology and political sociology.

Download or read book Age Matters written by Toni M. Calasanti and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-11 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of original chapters is designed to bring attention to a neglected area of feminist scholarship - aging. After several decades of feminist studies we are now well informed of the complex ways that gender shapes the lives of women and men. Similarly, we know more about how gendered power relations interface with race and ethnicity, class and sexual orientation. Serious theorizing of old age and age relations to gender represents the next frontier of feminist scholarship. In this volume, leading national and international feminist scholars of aging take first steps in this direction, illuminating how age relations interact with other social inequalities, particularly gender. In doing so, the authors challenge and transform feminist scholarship and many taken for granted concepts in gender studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As new forms of family and 'non-traditional' families grow in number, there is a need to understand these 'new' arrangements and models of parenthood. This ground-breaking book discusses, using a comparative and a sociological perspective, examples of the relationship between changing gender identities and processes of family formation in the Western experience. It aims to show that, in the 21st century, it is possible to form a family without sex, without children, without a shared home, without a partner, without a working husband, without a heterosexual orientation or without a biological' sexual body. 'Diversity in family life' will help readers discover and understand the characteristics, advantages and drawbacks of these new models of parenthood, and their political implications in terms of social movements, characteristics and demands.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marriage and the Counsel of God is the product of over twenty-two years of biblical study and pastoral counseling. The text and accompanying workbook have proven themselves an effective means of preparing couples for marriage, of supporting those already married, and of recovering marriages that are failing. The text focuses on the biblical model for marriage found in Genesis and Ephesians while following an outline of basic Christian beliefs (e.g., the Ten Commandments, the Apostles' Creed, the Lord's Prayer, baptism, Holy Communion, and confession/absolution). The essential elements of these beliefs are considered for their import in the Christian life in general and regarding marriage in particular. Abundant Scripture references are provided, as well as examples from real-life situations. These and other helpful resources are also given in indices for quick reference. The book and workbook are written in clear, nontechnical, and engaging language and so are aimed for students and teachers of counseling, for counseling professionals, for pastors, and for the public in general.
Book Synopsis Storying the Ecocatastrophe by : Helena Duffy
Download or read book Storying the Ecocatastrophe written by Helena Duffy and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-05-31 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do writers and artists represent the climate catastrophe so that their works stir audiences to political action or at least raise their environmental awareness without, however, appearing didactic? Storying the Ecocatastrophe attempts to answer this question while interrogating the potential of narrative to become a viable political force. The collection of essays achieves this by examining the representational strategies and ideological goals of contemporary cultural productions about climate change. These productions have been created across different genres, such as the traditional novel, dance performance, solarpunk, economic report, collage, and space opera, as well as across different languages and cultures. The volume’s twelve chapters demonstrate that rising temperatures, erratic weather, extinction of species, depletion of resources, and coastal erosion and flooding are an effect of our abusive relationship with nature. They also show that our use of nuclear power, extraction of natural resources and extensive farming, including heavy reliance on pesticides, intersect with intrahuman violence, as fleshed out by heteropatriarchy, racism, (neo)colonialism, and capitalism. They finally argue that human activity has indirectly contributed to other contemporary crises, namely the migrant crisis and the spread of contagious diseases such as Covid-19.
