Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Seaside Bone Lichen (Hypogymnia heterophylla) is currently listed as Threatened under the Species at Risk Act. There are seven known populations of Seaside Bone Lichen in Canada, all of which are located within approximately 40 km of each other on the southern coast of Vancouver Island. The total known population size is thought to be around 2000 to 3000 individuals. The main threats to Seaside Bone Lichen are climate change and removal of, or damage to, its host trees. All populations face the risk of destruction or damage of host trees via the increasing severity and frequency of winter storms predicted with climate change. Three of the seven populations are located in areas frequented by visitors who could potentially damage trees. One of these also faces the risk of tree removal. The remaining three populations are located on a military reserve, where trees potentially could be damaged by efforts to improve habitat for vascular plant species at risk, and/or by military exercises. The species is limited by its extremely narrow habitat requirements. Feasibility of recovery is unknown at this time as specific impacts of climate change on this species are not known, and it is unknown whether these impacts can be avoided or mitigated"--Executive summary, p. iv.
Book Synopsis Forest Ecosystem Classification for Nova Scotia by : Kevin Stewart Keys
Download or read book Forest Ecosystem Classification for Nova Scotia written by Kevin Stewart Keys and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide is part of the Nova Scotia forest ecosystem classification (FEC) system. It describes all currently recognized FEC Soil Types (STs) in the province along with related management interpretations. Although presented as a separate document, this guide is designed to be used in conjunction with provincial vegetation type and ecosite guides to support ecosystem based, stand-level forest management in Nova Scotia. Soil types were derived from 1,456 provincial FEC field plots sampled between 2000 and 2010. Data from an additional 102 non-FEC plots assessed by the Atlantic Canada Conservation Data Centre and NSDNR Wildlife Division were also used.--Document.
Book Synopsis Temperate and Boreal Rainforests of the World by : Dominick A. DellaSala
Download or read book Temperate and Boreal Rainforests of the World written by Dominick A. DellaSala and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Temperate rainforests are biogeographically unique. Compared to their tropical counterparts, temperate rainforests are rarer and are found disproportionately along coastlines. Because most temperate rainforests are marked by the intersection of marine, terrestrial, and freshwater systems, these rich ecotones are among the most productive regions on Earth. Globally, temperate rainforests store vast amounts of carbon, provide habitat for scores of rare and endemic species with ancient affinities, and sustain complex food-web dynamics. In spite of their global significance, however, protection levels for these ecosystems are far too low to sustain temperate rainforests under a rapidly changing global climate and ever expanding human footprint. Therefore, a global synthesis is needed to provide the latest ecological science and call attention to the conservation needs of temperate and boreal rainforests. A concerted effort to internationalize the plight of the world’s temperate and boreal rainforests is underway around the globe; this book offers an essential (and heretofore missing) tool for that effort. DellaSala and his contributors tell a compelling story of the importance of temperate and boreal rainforests that includes some surprises (e.g., South Africa, Iran, Turkey, Japan, Russia). This volume provides a comprehensive reference from which to build a collective vision of their future.
