Book Synopsis Population Dynamics in Variable Environments by : Shripad Tuljapurkar
Download or read book Population Dynamics in Variable Environments written by Shripad Tuljapurkar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demography relates observable facts about individuals to the dynamics of populations. If the dynamics are linear and do not change over time, the classical theory of Lotka (1907) and Leslie (1945) is the central tool of demography. This book addresses the situation when the assumption of constancy is dropped. In many practical situations, a population will display unpredictable variation over time in its vital rates, which must then be described in statistical terms. Most of this book is concerned with the theory of populations which are subject to random temporal changes in their vital rates, although other kinds of variation (e. g. , cyclical) are also dealt with. The central questions are: how does temporal variation work its way into a population's future, and how does it affect our interpretation of a population's past. The results here are directed at demographers of humans and at popula tion biologists. The uneven mathematical level is dictated by the material, but the book should be accessible to readers interested in population the ory. (Readers looking for background or prerequisites will find much of it in Hal Caswell's Matrix population models: construction, analysis, and in terpretation (Sinauer 1989) ). This book is in essence a progress report and is deliberately brief; I hope that it is not mystifying. I have not attempted to be complete about either the history or the subject, although most sig nificant results and methods are presented.
Book Synopsis Ecology of Tidal Freshwater Forested Wetlands of the Southeastern United States by : William H. Conner
Download or read book Ecology of Tidal Freshwater Forested Wetlands of the Southeastern United States written by William H. Conner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-06-24 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book draws together the latest findings on the hydrological processes, community organization, and stress physiology of freshwater, tidally influenced land-margin forests of the southeastern United States. It describes the land use history that led to the restricted distribution of these wetlands, and provides descriptions of the hydrology, soils, biogeochemistry, and physiological ecology of these systems, highlighting the similarities shared among tidal freshwater forested wetlands.
Book Synopsis Mammals of North America by : Roland W. Kays
Download or read book Mammals of North America written by Roland W. Kays and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2009-11-09 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The best field guide to North American mammals The best-selling field guide that "sets new standards" (New Scientist) and "makes all other field guides for mammals of the United States. . . and Canada obsolete" (Journal of Mammalogy) is now even better. Covering 20 species recognized since 2002 and including 13 new color plates, this fully revised edition of Mammals of North America illustrates all 462 known mammal species in the United States and Canada—each in beautiful color and accurate detail. With a more up-to-date species list than any other guide, improved facing-page descriptions, easier-to-read distribution maps, updated common and scientific names, and track and scat illustrations, this slim, light, and easy-to-use volume is the must-have source for identifying North American mammals. Roland Kays and Don Wilson have scoured the technical literature to pull out the key differences between similar species, and illustrated these whenever possible, making the guide useful to amateur naturalists and professional zoologists alike. Casual animal watchers will appreciate the overview of mammal diversity and the tips on identifying animals they can spy in their binoculars, while scientists will appreciate the exacting detail needed to distinguish similar species, including illustrations of shrew teeth, bat toes, and whale dorsal fins. The best-illustrated and easiest-to-use field guide to North American mammals Beautiful and accurate color illustrations of all 462 mammals found in the United States and Canada—including 20 species recognized since 2002 112 color plates—including 13 new ones Key identification information—fully revised—on facing pages The most current taxonomy/species list Fully revised, easy-to-read range maps Illustrations of tracks, scat, and whale and dolphin dive sequences
Book Synopsis Conservation Biology in Theory and Practice by : Graeme Caughley
Download or read book Conservation Biology in Theory and Practice written by Graeme Caughley and published by Wiley. This book was released on 1995-09-06 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an up-to-date and comprehensive look at the increasingly important subject of population management and conservation. Drawing on case studies of previous extinctions and near-extinctions, the authors discuss current theories for why species are driven into decline and how these declines can be reversed. Set in a real-world context of economics, legislation and treaties, this book is very much a practical guide for conservation action. An eminently practical book discussing the theory and practice of conservation as it is in the real world rather than in an imaginary ideal scenario. A synthesis of the very important contribution Graeme Caughley made to the science of conservation biology.
