This technology is applicable to the recovery of cobalt from copper reverberatory furnace slags, as well as to the recovery of nickel, cobalt, copper, and platinum group metals from furnace and converter slags in plants treating nickel sulphide concentrates. Pilot-plant testwork at Mintek has demonstrated recoveries of 98 per cent for nickel and over 80 per cent for cobalt, at power levels of up to 600 KW. Results of computer simulations and experimental tests are presented.

This book was released on 1997 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effective pyrometallurgical recovery of cobalt (and nickel, and copper) from non-ferrous smelter slags has been demonstrated using a DC arc furnace. This process can be applied to either furnace or converter slag (or existing slag dumps). For the case of a base metals smelter comprising a primary furnace and a converter ( with an existing recycle of converter slag), a number of possible flowsheets have been evaluated in terms of overall cobalt recovery, power requirement, and capacity. The process options under consideration include the reduction of furnace and converter slag to form an alloy, as well as an upgrading (blowing) stage where the iron content of the alloy is depressed. A comparison has also been made between the use of an existing converter and the use of a separate additional converter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 20 Mt reverberatory furnace slag dump at Nkana in Zambia contains a substantial quantity of cobalt. A 40 MW DC arc furnace has been built at Chambishi for the purpose of recovering cobalt from the slag. The technology was jointly developed by Mintek and Anglovaal Mining Ltd (Avmin), and the furnace was designed by Bateman Titaco. Testwork at the 150-250 kW scale was conducted at AVRL, and larger scale piloting was conducted at Mintek (in partnership with Avmin) in a 3 MW DC arc furnace. Approximately 840 tons of Nkana dump slag (ranging from 0.66% Co) was processed at power levels around 1-2 MW. Good overall cobalt extraction was achieved, and approximately 100 tons of cobalt-bearing alloy was produced (containing 5 to 14% Co). This testwork demonstrated that the Nkana dump slag could be processed in a DC arc furnace of suitable design, to produce a cobalt-bearing alloy suitable for further hydrometallurgical processing. Bateman Titaco were contracted to design and build the furnace, and the design team contained representatives from Avmin and Mintek. The project was conceived as a fast-track exercise, and many activities had to be run in parallel. Notable features of the furnace include an ABB power supply, a Concast conductive hearth, the refractory design, an copper cooling in the sidewalls. Power to the furnace was switched on during January 2001.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Slags have been produced as by-products from pyrometallurgical processes for thousands of years, and have generally been regarded as waste. Many of these slags are no longer seen as resides merely to be discarded, but as potential economic sources of metals, or as useful by-products in their own right. Slag cleaning can enhance the recovery of valuable metals in existing pyrometallurgical processes, or can produce economic value from recycling old slag dumps for example, a process had been developed and implemented industrially for recovering cobalt from copper smelting slag in a DC arc furnace. The relatively non-leachable behaviour of glassy slags allows them to be used as a very safe means of disposal of metallurgical waste streams, including many that are classified as hazardous. The high temperatures, reducing conditions, and good mixing that can be achieved in a DC arc furnace enable the effective functioning of this environmentally beneficial means of disposal. Lead blast furnace slag can be rendered safe for disposal by treating it using the Enviroplas process, which strips most of the hazardous lead from the slag (and traps the rest in an insoluble glass slag) and recovers economic quantities of zinc by absorbing (in a lead splash condenser) the zinc vapour that is fumed off in the furnace. Another example can be seen in the recovery of a chromium- and nickel-containing alloy from stainless steel plant dust, while producing a disposable residual slag. The examples presented here illustrate that it is possible to develop processes that are both economic and environmentally beneficial.
