Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of the Presbyteries of Inverness and Dingwall, 1643-1688: Edited, With an Introduction From the Original Script The editor, with the approval of the Council of the Society, has not always given the full minute in the following pages. Such portions - chiefly of a formal nature - as were in his opinion of no value from a historical or social point of View have been omitted. Again, such paragraphs as are within brackets only give the purport of the minutes to which they refer. Certain lists, however, of persons charged with the offence of supporting Montrose and the Royalist cause, which have been omitted from their proper places, have been given as an Appendix. Book Synopsis Gaelic in Scotland 1698-1981 by : Charles W. J. Withers

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surprisingly little is known of the geographical history of Gaelic: where and when it was spoken in the past, and how and why the Gaelic-speaking area of Scotland – the Gaidhealtachd – has retreated and the language declined. A hundred years ago there were 250,000 Gaelic speakers. Now there are 80,000. This book answers four broad questions: What has been the geography of Gaelic in the past? How has that geography changed over time and space? What have been the patterns of language use within the Gaedhealtachd in the past? And what have been the processes of language change? Emphasis is upon the changing geography of the spoken language from 1698 to 1981: from the earliest date for which it is possible to document the expanse of the Gaelic language area to the most recent census to record the numbers speaking Gaelic.

Book Synopsis Governing Gaeldom by : Allan D. Kennedy
Download or read book Governing Gaeldom written by Allan D. Kennedy and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-04-03 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional accounts of the Scottish Highlands tend to assume that they remained detached from the mainstream of British affairs until well into the eighteenth century. In Governing Gaeldom, Allan Kennedy challenges this perception through detailed analysis of the relationship between the Highlands and the Scottish state during the reigns of Charles II and James VII & II. Drawing upon a wide range of sources, Kennedy traces the political, social, ecclesiastical and economic linkages between centre and periphery, demonstrating that the Highlands were much more tightly integrated than hitherto assumed. At the same time, he reconstructs the development of Highland policy, placing it within its proper context of the absolutist pretensions of the late-Stuart monarchy. The result is a thorough reinterpretation which offers fresh insights into the process of state-formation in early-modern Britain. The volume has been awarded the Frank Watson Book Prize for 2015.
