This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of Tennyson, Ruskin and Browning The wind that goes blowing where it listeth, once, in the early beginning of this century, came sweeping through the garden of this old Lincolnshire rectory, and, as the wind blew, a sturdy child of five years old with shining locks stood opening his arms upon the blast and letting himself be blown along; and as he travelled on he made his first line of poetry and said, I hear a voice that's speaking in the wind, and he tossed his arms, and the gust whirled on, sweeping into the great abyss of winds. One might perhaps still trace in the noble familiar face of our Poet Laureate the features of this child, one of many deep eyed sons and daughters born in the quiet rectory among the elm-trees. Book Synopsis A Browning Chronology by : M. Garrett
Download or read book A Browning Chronology written by M. Garrett and published by Springer. This book was released on 1999-10-20 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several thousand letters to and from Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning have survived, together with other information on the composition and context of works from Barrett's 'lines on virtue' written at the age of eight in 1814 to Browning's Asolando (1889). The Chronology seeks to guide readers through this mass of material in three main sections: youth, contrasting early backgrounds and careers, and growing interest in each other's work to 1845; courtship, marriage, Italy, and work including Aurora Leigh and Men and Women (1845-61); Browning's later life of relentless socializing and prolific writing from his return to London to his death in Venice in 1889. The book provides not only precise dating but much matter on such topics as the Brownings' extensive reading in English, French and classical literature, their many friendships, and their sometimes conflicting political beliefs.
Book Synopsis Tennyson's Rapture by : Cornelia D. J. Pearsall
Download or read book Tennyson's Rapture written by Cornelia D. J. Pearsall and published by OUP USA. This book was released on 2008-01-29 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores Tennyson's representation of rapture as a radical mechanism of transformation--theological, social, political, or personal--and as a figure for critical processes in his own poetics. Offering a new approach to reading Victorian dramatic monologues, Pearsall probes the complex aims of these performances, showing how speakers' ambitions are both articulated in, and attained through, their consequential speech.
Book Synopsis The Reception of Alfred Tennyson in Europe by : Leonee Ormond
Download or read book The Reception of Alfred Tennyson in Europe written by Leonee Ormond and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-11-17 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alfred Lord Tennyson (1809-1892) has often been considered a particularly British writer in part as his official post as Poet Laureate inevitably committed him to a certain amount of patriotic writing. This volume focuses on his impact on the continent, presenting a major scholarly analysis of Tennyson's wider reception in different areas of Europe. It considers reader and critical responses and explores the effect of his poetry upon his contemporaries and later writers, as well as his influence upon illustrators, painters and musicians. The leading international contributors raise questions of translation and publication and of the choices made for this purpose along with the way in which his ideas and style influenced European writing and culture. Tennyson's reputation in Anglophone countries is now assured, following a decline in the years after his death. This volume enables us to chart the changes in Tennyson's European reputation during the later 19th, 20th and 21st centuries.

Book Synopsis Robert Browning's Language by : Donald S. Hair
Download or read book Robert Browning's Language written by Donald S. Hair and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1999-12-15 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the influences that shaped the language used by one of the nineteenth century's greatest writers? How did his religious beliefs, the books he owned, the paintings and music he loved, affect almost sixty years' output of poems, plays, essays, and letters? This book attempts to define Browning's understanding of the nature and use of words and syntax by considering not only a full range of texts from the 1833 Pauline to the 1889 Asolando, but also the ideas important to Browning, the historical context in which he lived, and the other artistic passions that played a part in his life. In this companion volume to Tennyson's Language, Donald Hair establishes Browning's place at the crossroads between empirical and idealist traditions and explains his "double view" of language, arguing that both Locke and the Congregationalists found language to be at the same time empty and a God-given essential. The Victorian age's anti-theatrical bias, which Browning came to share, and his reading of predecessors, principally Quarles, Bunyan, Donne, and Smart, also shaped his understanding of the diction of poetry. Hair conceives of Browning's language as a theoretical whole, encompassing words, genres, rhyme, syntax, and phonetics. He also links Browning's interest in music with his rhyming, the most essential and characteristic feature of his prosody, and relates his interest in painting to the interpretation of the visual image in the emblem and in typology.
