Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An introduction to the entire Convocation Records of the Church of England, offering an invaluable survey of this important source. The convocation records of the Churches of England and Ireland are the principal source of our information about the administration of those churches from middle ages until modern times. They contain the minutes of clergy synods, the legislation passed by them, tax assessments imposed by the king on the clergy, and accounts of the great debates about religious reformation; they also include records of heresy trials in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, many of them connected with the spread of Lollardy. However, they have never before been edited or published in full, and their publication as a complete set of documents provides a valuable resource for scholarship. The introductory volume presents both a chronological and a thematic survey of the English convocations from 1313 to the mid-nineteenth century, with a postscript bringing the account up to the present day. The chronological survey gives a detailed account of each individual convocation; the thematic survey explains the pattern of membership, the procedures and functions of the convocations and their relationship to other legislative institutions both at home and abroad. Detailed statistics, in tabular form, support the earlier sections, and the volume also includes a complete concordance to David Wilkins' Concilia Magnae Britanniae et Hiberniae, for which this edition of the convocation records is a partial replacement.

There is also a complete concordance to David Wilkins' Concilia Magnae Britanniae et Hiberniae, much of which has now been replaced by this collection of records.

This volume reconstructs the history of the convocation in the early years of Henry VIII and reproduces the abstracts made of the records from 1529 onwards, which were burnt in the great fire of London in 1666. Of particular interest are the notes of Peter Heylyn, which were only rediscovered in 1999, and have never been printed before. Also included are the canons and articles of religion passed by convocation in the sixteenth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new interpretation of English history and religion in the eighteenth century. The eighteenth century has long divided critical opinion. Some contend that it witnessed the birth of the modern world, while others counter that England remained an ancien regime confessional state. This book takes issue with both positions, arguing that the former overstate the newness of the age and largely misdiagnose the causes of change, while the latter rightly point to the persistence of more traditional modes of thought and behaviour, but downplay the era's fundamental uncertainty and misplace the reasons for and the timeline of its passage. The overwhelming catalyst for change is here seen to be war, rather than long-term social and economic changes. Archbishop Thomas Secker [1693-1768], the Cranmer or Laud of his age, and the hitherto neglected church reforms he spearheaded, form the particular focus of the book; this is the first full archivally-based study of a crucial but frequently ignored figure. ROBERT G. INGRAM is Assistant Professor at the Department of History, Ohio University.

Book excerpt: Exploring what the early English Protestants came to believe about the afterlife, and how they arrived at their positions, this much-needed book fills a gap in the scholarly literature. In surveying the authorised doctrinal works of the English church through the Reformation period, the progress of eschatological thinking is traced from the earliest days of change to the solidification of the formularies which remain binding across the worldwide Anglican Church today. Fresh observations are made on some well-known texts such as the Books of Common Prayer, Articles of Religion and official Tudor homilies, and these are complemented by commentary on surprisingly understudied documents of the period including primers, catechisms, and the paratexts of the early printed English Bibles. The result is a fascinating study of the English reformers’ navigation past both Roman Catholic and radical anabaptist beliefs, and it shows that their arrival at a relatively barren destination was due in part to a complete switch in theological priorities and in part to a fear of the implications of formally adopting some of the highly contested views. Establishment Eschatology will prove to be an important resource for students and scholars of England’s early modern religious and cultural history.

D. 1848: Edited and Annotated for the Diocesan Commission on Archives With the printing of these Records the documentary history of the Diocese is made more complete. Some acts of the earlier Conventions seem obscure until explained by the discus sions and conclusions of the Bishop and clergy in Convocation. While the Records have been recognized as of great historic value by all Connecticut Churchmen, and especially by those who have carefully studied the spotless history, as Bishop Williams styled it, of this the mother diocese of the American Church, there has been but one previous proposal to publish them. This was in 1851, when the lovable and erudite Rev. Dr. Alonzo B. Chapin, editor of The Calendar, contemplated issuing them with some historical notes after publishing extracts in the columns of The Calendar; and for this purpose had a copy made which apparently has disappeared. The historian of the Church in Connecticut, the revered and learned Dr. Eben Edwards Beardsley, consulted them while preparing his History and incorporated some extracts into his text. He also used them freely in his Life of our first Bishop, Dr. Samuel Seabury. At the annual meeting of the permanent Commission upon Parochial Archives held on April 10, 1899, it was resolved that the Convention have the existing Records of the Convocations of the clergy carefully printed with notes for preservation. No measures were then taken to bring the subject before the Convention. The consideration of the Records was resumed at the annual meeting of the Commission on May 13, 1902. The former resolution was unanimously reaffirmed and a member of the Commission appointed to present it to the Convention.
