Book excerpt: The convocation records of the Churches of England and Ireland are the principal source of our information about the administration of those churches from middle ages until modern times. They contain the minutes of clergy synods, the legislation passed by them, tax assessments imposed by the king on the clergy, and accounts of the great debates about religious reformation; they also include records of heresy trials in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, many of them connected with the spread of Lollardy. However, they have never before been edited or published in full, and their publication as a complete set of documents provides a valuable resource for scholarship. This volume contains the convocation records of the modern diocese, detailing day-to-day administration over the last century and a quarter, none of which has been published before. The verbatim accounts of proceedings in convocation give a clear insight into Manx social history during the period. There are also appendixes listing diocesan officials and giving an abstract of the tithe accounts from the commutation of tithes in 1839 to their complete abolition in 1946.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An introduction to the entire Convocation Records of the Church of England, offering an invaluable survey of this important source. The convocation records of the Churches of England and Ireland are the principal source of our information about the administration of those churches from middle ages until modern times. The introductory volume presents both a chronological and a thematic survey of the English convocations from 1313 to the mid-nineteenth century, with a postscript bringing the account up to the present day. The chronological survey gives a detailed account of each individual convocation; the thematic survey explains the pattern of membership, the procedures and functions of the convocations and their relationship to other legislative institutions both at home and abroad. Detailed statistics, in tabular form, support the earlier sections, and the volume also includes a complete concordance to David Wilkins' Concilia Magnae Britanniae et Hiberniae, for which this edition of the convocation records is a partial replacement.

Download or read book Viruses, Plagues, and History written by Michael B. A. Oldstone and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Here, my previous edition of Viruses, Plagues, & History is updated to reflect both progress and disappointment since that publication. This edition describes newcomers to the range of human infections, specifically, plagues that play important roles in this 21st century. The first is Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), an infection related to Sudden Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). SARS was the first new-found plague of this century. Zika virus, which is similar to yellow fever virus in being transmitted by mosquitos, is another of the recent scourges. Zika appearing for the first time in the Americas is associated with birth defects and a paralytic condition in adults. Lastly, illness due to hepatitis viruses were observed prominently during the second World War initially associated with blood transfusions and vaccine inoculations. Since then, hepatitis virus infections have afflicted millions of individuals, in some leading to an acute fulminating liver disease or more often to a life-long persistent infection. A subset of those infected has developed liver cancer. However, in a triumph of medical treatments for infectious diseases, pharmaceuticals have been developed whose use virtually eliminates such maladies. For example, Hepatitis C virus infection has been eliminated from almost all (>97%) of its victims. This incredible result was the by-product of basic research in virology as well as cell and molecular biology during which intelligent drugs were designed to block events in the hepatitis virus life-cycle"--

This book was released on 2021-09-30 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a definitive account of the Austro-Hungarian Royal and Imperial Army during the First World War. Graydon A. Tunstall shows how Austria-Hungary entered the war woefully unprepared for the ordeal it would endure. When the war commenced, the Habsburg Army proved grossly under strengthen relative to trained officers and manpower, possessing obsolete weapons and equipment, and with the vast majority of its troops proved inadequately trained for modern warfare. Well over one million Habsburg troops mobilized creating an enormous logistical challenge of forging an army from the diverse cultures, languages, economic and educational backgrounds of the Empire's peoples. Graydon A. Tunstall shows how the army suffered from poor strategic direction and outdated tactics and facing a two-front offensive against both Russia and Serbia. He charts the army's performance on the battlefields of Galicia, Serbia, Romania, the Middle East and Italy through to its ultimate collapse in 1918.
