Book excerpt: The court records of Cecil County, Maryland, provide a fascinating glimpse into the lives and concerns of our ancestors in colonial Cecil County. This volume contains abstracts from the petitions presented to the court during the years 1717-1732, a period when the county's basic infrastructure and organization were just being established. Every action coming before the court has been abstracted and the name of every individual mentioned in each original court record is included. In addition to the abstracts many of the texts have been transcribed in full and included in the Appendix. John F. Polk of Havre de Grace pursues family, Scotch-Irish and Maryland colonial history as a personal hobby. He currently serves as the Clan Historian for Clan Pollock International and publishes short articles on family history in the Clan Pollock newsletter. He is retired from a forty-five year career as a scientist and senior advisor for international research collaboration at the U.S. Army Research Laboratory. 2021, 6x9, paper, index, 184 pp.

Book Synopsis This was the Life by : Millard Milburn Rice
Download or read book This was the Life written by Millard Milburn Rice and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 1984 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is composed of extracts from the Judgment Records of Frederick County, Maryland, from the county's formation in 1748 to 1765. Since the Frederick County Court was the sole governing body of the county, as well as its civil and criminal court, the record of its actions covers every phase of colonial life. Here is reflected not only laws and customs, but humor and tragedy, compassion and cruelty-a daily record, in fact, of events in the life of the inhabitants of this important Maryland county. The records of the proceedings of the County Court (the Judgment Records) deal with a wide range of activities and issues, and therefore a substantial number of Frederick County residents appear in the records, which include orphan, bastardy, and custody cases; civil and criminal suits; and a host of petitions for apprenticeships, articles of indenture, appointments, surveys, and licenses.

Download or read book Stealing Freedom Along the Mason-Dixon Line written by Milt Diggins and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Slavery, freedom, and kidnapping in the mid-Atlantic. This is the story of Thomas McCreary, a slave catcher from Cecil County, Maryland. Reviled by some, proclaimed a hero by others, he first drew public attention in the late 1840s for a career that peaked a few years after passage of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850. Living and working as he did at the midpoint between Philadelphia, an important center for assisting fugitive slaves, and Baltimore, a major port in the slave trade, his story illustrates in raw detail the tensions that arose along the border between slavery and freedom just prior to the Civil War. McCreary and his community provide a framework to examine slave catching and kidnapping in the Baltimore-Wilmington-Philadelphia region and how those activities contributed to the nation’s political and visceral divide.
