Book excerpt: The differential cross sections for the production of photons in Z→[mu]+[mu]-[gamma] decays are presented as a function of the transverse energy of the photon and its separation from the nearest muon. The data for these measurements are collected with the CMS detector and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb-1 of pp collisions at √s=7 TeV delivered by the CERN LHC. The cross sections are compared to simulations with powheg and pythia, where pythia is used to simulate parton showers and final-state photons. These simulations match the data to better than 5%.

Book excerpt: This thesis describes a study of the tau-pair final state in proton collisions at a center of mass energy of 7 TeV using the CMS Experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Tau leptons usually decay to hadrons and their efficient detection is very challenging in a hadronic environment. A novel tau reconstruction algorithm that maintains tau detection efficiency for low background rates was developed. Events were then selected from the CMS 2011 data sample in three T T final states depending on the tau decays: mu + T (h), e+ T (h) , e+mu where T (h) denotes a hadronic tau decay. Those events were used to measure the Z-boson production cross section where Z yields T T . A search for the Standard Model and Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) Higgs bosons was also performed. No signal was observed in the Higgs search and stringent new bounds were set for the SM Higgs production and in the MSSM parameter space.

Book excerpt: The first measurement of the inclusive cross-section of the Z boson decaying to two tau leptons was measured with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The data sample in this analysis represents an integrated luminosity of 35 pb ̄1 of proton-proton collisions at a center of mass energy of sqrt(s)=7 TeV. Separate measurements were performed in four decay modes based on how the two tau leptons decay: to hadrons and an electron, to hadrons and a muon, to an electron and a muon, and to two muons. In all four final states, inclusive cross-section measurements were made both in the fiducial region of the ATLAS detector where acceptance is high and in the full phase space, restricted to the mass range of [66, 116] GeV. The measurements from the four individual channels were then combined to yield the combined Z --> [tau] [tau] cross-section of 970 ± 70 (stat.) ± 60 (sys.) ± 30 (lumi.) pb.

The measurements use data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of s√=13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1. The production of a Higgs boson in association with a W or Z boson is established, with observed (expected) significances of 4.0 (4.1) and 5.3 (5.1) standard deviations, respectively. Cross-sections of associated production of a Higgs boson decaying into bottom quark pairs with an electroweak gauge boson, W or Z, decaying into leptons are measured as a function of the gauge boson transverse momentum in kinematic fiducial volumes. The cross-section measurements are all consistent with the Standard Model expectations, and the total uncertainties vary from 30% in the high gauge boson transverse momentum regions to 85% in the low regions

Book excerpt: "This thesis presents the measurements of the differential production cross-sections of a Z boson in association with at least one charm-quark-initiated jet, where the Z boson decays leptonically into a muon-antimuon pair. Data recorded in proton-proton collisions by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) during the years of 2015 to 2018 is utilised, when the LHC was running at a center of mass energy of 13 TeV. The studied data corresponds to a total integrated luminosity of 139 fb^-1. The measurements are compared to simulated data produced at next-to-leading-order and normalized to theoretical predictions at next-to-next-leading order. The results show that predictions underestimate the total number of events by 50% but display a good modelling of all distribution shapes of the chosen observables in data. The discrepancy can be attributed to a problem in the normalisation but further studies need to be made to settle the issue"--

The analysis is performed using proton-proton collision data recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC at center-of-mass energies of 8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 19.7 and 2.7 inverse femtobarns, respectively. The Z bosons are reconstructed from opposite-sign electron or muon pairs. No statistically significant deviation from the standard model predictions has been found in the 200-2000 GeV mass range. Upper limits at 95% confidence level have been derived on the product of the scalar particle production cross section and the branching fraction of the Z decaying into electrons or muons, which range from 280 to 20 fb for resonance masses between 200 and 2000 GeV.

Book excerpt: In searches for SUSY in all-hadronic channels, events with jets and a Z boson form an irreducible background when the Z boson decays to a pair of neutrinos. For R-parity conserving Susy models, every decay chain involving a superparticle must result in at least one lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP), which can be neutral and noninteracting. The detector signature for the LSP is identical to that of the two neutrinos from the Z, which appear as an imbalance in the transverse momentum of the event. The characterization of these types of events is crucially important in any search for new physics performed in a multi-jets+missing transverse momentum channel. A method for estimating this irreducible background using events with a measured photon is presented, and the results for a search performed in the all-hadronic multi-jet channel are shown to be consistent with standard model expectations. Limits are set on the mass of expected new particles in various models.

The measurements use 20.3 fb-1 of proton–proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of √s = 8 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector. No deviations from the Standard Model expectations are found, and production cross section limits are set at 95% confidence level. Masses of the hypothetical aT and ?T states of a benchmark Low Scale Technicolor model are excluded in the ranges [275,960] GeV and [200,700]?[750,890] GeV, respectively. Limits at 95% confidence level on the production cross section of a singlet scalar resonance decaying to Z? final states have also been obtained for masses below 1180 GeV.

Book excerpt: A search has been performed for long-lived particles that could have come to rest within the CMS detector, using the time intervals between LHC beam crossings. The existence of such particles could be deduced from observation of their decays via energy deposits in the CMS calorimeter appearing at times that are well separated from any proton-proton collisions. Using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 18.6 fb-1 of 8 TeV proton-proton collisions, and a search interval corresponding to 281 h of trigger livetime, 10 events are observed, with a background prediction of 13.2+3.6 -2.5 events. Limits are presented at 95 % confidence level on gluino and top squark production, for over 13 orders of magnitude in the mean proper lifetime of the stopped particle. Assuming a cloud model of R-hadron interactions, a gluino with mass ≤1000 GeV and a top squark with mass ≤525 GeV are excluded, for lifetimes between 1 μs and 1000 s. Finally, these results are the most stringent constraints on stopped particles to date.

Book excerpt: We present next-to-leading order predictions for final states containing leptons produced through the decay of a Z boson in association with either a photon and a jet, or a pair of photons. The effect of photon radiation from the final state leptons is included and we also allow for contributions arising from fragmentation processes. Phenomenological studies are presented for the LHC in the case of final states containing charged leptons and in the case of neutrinos. We also use the procedure introduced by Stewart and Tackmann to provide a reliable estimate of the scale uncertainty inherent in our theoretical calculations of jet-binned Z gamma cross sections. These computations have been implemented in the public code MCFM.

Results are based on a data sample recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 inverse picobarns. The electron and muon decay channels of the W and Z are used. The total cross sections are measured for photon transverse energy>10 GeV and spatial separation from charged leptons in the plane of pseudorapidity and azimuthal angle>0.7, and with an additional dilepton invariant mass requirement of> 50 GeV for the Z-gamma process. The following cross section times branching fraction values are found: sigma(pp to W-gamma+X) B(W to lepton neutrino) = 56.3 +/- 5.0 (stat.) +/- 5.0 (syst.) +/- 2.3 (lumi.) pb and sigma(pp to Z-gamma+X) B}(Z to lepton lepton) = 9.4 +/- 1.0 (stat.) +/- 0.6 (syst.) +/- 0.4 (lumi.) pb. These measurements are in agreement with standard model predictions. The first limits on anomalous WW gamma, ZZ gamma, and Z gamma gamma trilinear gauge couplings at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV are set.
