Book excerpt: Excerpt from Young Ireland: A Fragment of Irish History, 1840-1850 I have written this book in the intervals of a busy life, because I believed it was the best and last service I could render to Ireland. It contains a memoir of the public affairs of that country during a period of abnormal political activity a period to which may be traced, as to their fountain-head, many of the Opinions now universally current among the Irish people. My first aim was to make a new generation familiar with the truthfulness, simplicity, and real moderation of the men with whom, it was said, a new soul came into Ireland. The Young Ireland party, as their enemies in the first instance named them, and as they came in the end to name themselves, after having been long misrepresented, have in latter times been vindicated and. Applauded more than enough, but they have never I think been understood. What they aimed to do, and what they accomplished; their actual motives and their means of action, as disclosed in their private correspondence, and interpreted by one who shared their counsels, are set down in this book for the first time and will be found I think worthy of study by statesmen and publicists accustomed to meditate on the afiairs of Ireland. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Four Years of Irish History, 1845-1849: A Sequel to "Young Ireland" Ireland, chiefly because of the unusual period which has elapsed since the publication of the first volume. The main cause of delay was the quantity of new materials placed at my disposal during last year. Describing transactions in which, for the most part, I had personally shared, I might perhaps have dis pensed with aid; but contemporary correspondence and diaries are like living witnesses, who come to correct or confirm a writer's individual impressions, and I gladly accepted, and have used largely throughout the narrative, the valuable materials in question. I felt the more bound to do so that one aim of this book is to negative long-received opinions, and disturb rooted prepossessions, and this is a task which is attempted in vain unless a writer rests his deductions on solid evidence. It will be more convenient to acknowledge these documents wherever they are used than to enumerate them here. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A book in the best tradition of popular history—the untold story of Ireland's role in maintaining Western culture while the Dark Ages settled on Europe. • The perfect St. Patrick's Day gift! Every year millions of Americans celebrate St. Patrick's Day, but they may not be aware of how great an influence St. Patrick was on the subsequent history of civilization. Not only did he bring Christianity to Ireland, he instilled a sense of literacy and learning that would create the conditions that allowed Ireland to become "the isle of saints and scholars"—and thus preserve Western culture while Europe was being overrun by barbarians. In this entertaining and compelling narrative, Thomas Cahill tells the story of how Europe evolved from the classical age of Rome to the medieval era. Without Ireland, the transition could not have taken place. Not only did Irish monks and scribes maintain the very record of Western civilization -- copying manuscripts of Greek and Latin writers, both pagan and Christian, while libraries and learning on the continent were forever lost—they brought their uniquely Irish world-view to the task. As Cahill delightfully illustrates, so much of the liveliness we associate with medieval culture has its roots in Ireland. When the seeds of culture were replanted on the European continent, it was from Ireland that they were germinated. In the tradition of Barbara Tuchman's A Distant Mirror, How The Irish Saved Civilization reconstructs an era that few know about but which is central to understanding our past and our cultural heritage. But it conveys its knowledge with a winking wit that aptly captures the sensibility of the unsung Irish who relaunched civilization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The historian A. T. Q. Stewart once remarked that in Ireland all history is applied history—that is, the study of the past prosecutes political conflict by other means. Indeed, nearly twenty years after the 1998 Belfast Agreement, "dealing with the past" remains near the top of the political agenda in Northern Ireland. The essays in this volume, by leading experts in the fields of Irish and British history, politics, and international studies, explore the ways in which competing "social" or "collective memories" of the Northern Ireland "Troubles" continue to shape the post-conflict political landscape. The contributors to this volume embrace a diversity of perspectives: the Provisional Republican version of events, as well as that of its Official Republican rival; Loyalist understandings of the recent past as well as the British Army's authorized for-the-record account; the importance of commemoration and memorialization to Irish Republican culture; and the individual memory of one of the noncombatants swept up in the conflict. Tightly specific, sharply focused, and rich in local detail, these essays make a significant contribution to the burgeoning literature of history and memory. The book will interest students and scholars of Irish studies, contemporary British history, memory studies, conflict resolution, and political science. Contributors: Jim Smyth, Ian McBride, Ruan O’Donnell, Aaron Edwards, James W. McAuley, Margaret O’Callaghan, John Mulqueen, and Cathal Goan.

Book excerpt: Thomas Wentworth landed in Ireland in 1633 - almost 100 years after Henry VIII had begun his break with Rome. The majority of the people were still Catholic. William Laud had just been elevated to Canterbury. A Yorkshire cleric, John Bramhall, followed the new viceroy and became, in less than one year, Bishop of Derry. This 2007 study, which is centred on Bramhall, examines how these three men embarked on a policy for the established Church which represented not only a break with a century of reforming tradition but which also sought to make the tiny Irish Church a model for the other Stuart kingdoms. Dr McCafferty shows how accompanying canonical changes were explicitly implemented for notice and eventual adoption in England and Scotland. However within eight years the experiment was blown apart and reconstruction denounced as subversive. Wentworth, Laud and Bramhall faced consequent disgrace, trial, death or exile.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ireland's Fight for Freedom: Setting Forth the High Lights of Irish History The world is asked to consider Ireland merely as "England's domestic problem." Certain circumstances, unyielding as iron, preclude the acceptance of any such view. Not even by the utmost stretch of amiable intent can a question that strikes at the very heart of international agreement be set down and written off as "domestic." That magic formula, "self-determination," has marched armies and tumbled empires these last few years, playing too large a part in world-consciousness to be limited by any arbitrary discrimination in the hour of victory and adjustment. Even as Poles, Czechs, Jugoslavs, Ukrainians, Finns, and scores of other submerged nationalities are struggling to the upper air of independence, so does Ireland appeal to the solemn covenant of the Allies with its championship of the "rights of small peoples" and its sonorous assent to "the reign of law, based upon the consent of the governed."
