Interactive instruction evokes the active involvement of each trainee in his or her own computer-controlled audio-visual instruction. It exchanges information with the trainee on a personal basis, processes the trainee s responses to generate appropriate rewards or remediation, and measures, evaluates, and documents the trainee s learning performance. Project investigators reviewed the interactive multimedia industry and surveyed American shipyards to determine what trades are being taught, and if Interactive multimedia are being used. The report provides an overview of interactive instruction, including its applications and cost-effectiveness; describes the characteristics of shipyard trade training; identifies commercial interactive courseware applicable to trade training; discusses the potential use of authoring systems by shipyards; provides guidance for the integration of interactive instruction into existing shipyard training programs; and concludes with detailed recommendations for the development of a two-lesson demonstration of interactive instruction for trade training to be presented to shipyard management and training personnel.

Book excerpt: The report describes the development and contents of an interactive videodisc (IVD) lesson that was produced by the National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) to demonstrate interactive multimedia as an effective technology tor teaching shipyard trade skills. Interactive instruction evokes the active involvement of the trainee in his or her own computer controlled, audio-visual instruction. Through a desk top PC, the instruction exchanges information with the trainee on a personal basis; processes the trainee's responses to generate appropriate rewards or remediation; and measures, evaluates and documents the trainee's learning performance. An earlier study by NSRP surveyed American shipyards to investigate their experiences with interactive multimedia for trades' training, and to determine if American shipyards would participate in a demonstration of interactive instruction for that purpose. Findings of the survey led NSRP to sponsor the development of an interactive lesson titled, "Fundamentals of Arc Stud Welding." This lesson (1) demonstrate the ca abilities and benefits of interactive instruction tor training shipyard skilled trade tasks, (2) shows how interactive multimedia can be used for both tutorial and simulation instruction, (3) illustrates the ease with which interactive courseware can be developed by shipyards, and (4) provides an interactive lesson for instructing the fundamentals of arc stud welding. The development process and contents of the interactive lesson are thoroughly described in the report.

Book excerpt: To achieve the quality and productivity gains necessary to compete successfully in a global market, shipbuilders must prepare employees to apply diverse principles to complex problems. Rote learning of facts is no longer a useful paradigm for training employees to accomplish a wide range of shipbuilding jobs. Imagine a classroom where the instructor has the ability to monitor the trainee's level of comprehension and motivation, even as the presentation is underway. This same classroom provides the instructor with instantaneous control over a complete suite of advanced instructional equipment and environmental conditions. Newport News Shipbuilding has used the interactive technologies provided by such a classroom, combined with group facilitation methods to significantly improve pass rates in a trades radiological control training program from 67% to 89%. One result of this improved pass rate is that retraining requirements in this program have been reduced by 67%. This report describes the use of this Advanced Technology Classroom (ATC) to meet customer requirements to upgrade classroom performance of radiological control employees. The customer's challenge, our review of the available technology, and the characteristics of the ATC will be discussed. The effects of organizational variables, normative change in the classroom, and relevant research concerning the use Of interactive instructional technology will also be covered. Finally, the implications of the ATC for other shipyard training will be addressed.

Despite the numerous studies and reports citing the efficiencies of delivering instruction in a multisensory format via a computer, shipyards have been slow to implement this technology into their business practices. The reasons for this are twofold. First the technology is still viewed as nascent and unproven. Second the business benefits are not well understood by decision makers. This paper focuses on understanding the business benefits of implementing interactive multimedia in a shipyard environment. Case studies and success stories will be referenced for the purpose of understanding how interactive multimedia training works within the shipyard. The main thrust of discussion is towards how to properly analyze the expected return on investment and strategy for implementation of interactive multimedia within a typical shipyard.
