Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of a Lifetime by John Goode of Virginia Having long since passed the limit of human existence allotted by the Psalmist, I propose to write my recollections of the times in which I have lived and of some of the more prominent men whom I have personally known. I am urged to this course by many valued friends whose judgment is entitled to the highest respect. It is not my purpose to write an autobiography, as I have not the vanity to suppose that the reading public would be particularly interested in my personal career. I shall therefore avoid as far as possible the use of the personal pronoun; but in making my bow to the public I have thought that it might not be inappropriate to present a brief personal sketch by way of introduction. I am a descendant of that John Goode who emigrated from England prior to 1660, and settled at a place called Whitby, just below Richmond on the James River. My kinsman, G. Brown Goode, a gifted and learned scholar, in his remarkable book called the "Virginia Cousins." has given a graphic account of that early settler and his numerous descendants. This book is well worthy of a careful perusal by all who take an interest in the study of family history. I was born in the county of Bedford, Virginia, on the 27th of May, 1829.
