The plaza is primarily a hub for movement to other areas of the city and rarely a destination in itself. Many plans have been developed to redesign the plaza, but little has actually been implemented due to funding and politics. The importance of City Hall and the potential it has for remaking the city qualifies this project and its importance for reclaiming lost space. An intervention that will reinstate the historic fabric of the city and reveal the historical traces of the site and city as a larger whole will help link the city to its history on many levels and bring new life to the desolate plaza. The city of Boston does not have a specific institution dedicated to the city and its history. Many city museums today encompass much broader elements in addition to the typical exhibition spaces of history museums. The Boston History museum will be dedicated to connecting visitors to the city as well as reconnecting Bostonians to its history, present, and future. The new museum will engage the public in new ways to become a more active and visible part of the city and be more readily accessible to both visitors and Bostonians.
