Book Synopsis The Philosophy of the Enlightenment (Routledge Revivals) by : Lucien Goldmann
Download or read book The Philosophy of the Enlightenment (Routledge Revivals) written by Lucien Goldmann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-11-02 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this reissue, originally published in English in 1973, French philosopher Lucien Goldmann turns his attention to the Enlightenment of the eighteenth century, the great age of liberalism and individualism and analyses the ‘mental structures’ of the outlook of the philosophes, who showed that the ancien regime and the privileges of the Church were irrational anachronisms. In assessing the strengths and limitations of individualism, Goldmann considers the achievements and limitations of the Enlightenment. He discusses the views of Hegel and Marx and examines the relation between liberal scepticism and traditional Christianity to point the way to the possible reconciliation of the two seemingly incompatible ‘world visions’ of East and West today.

Book Synopsis The German Novelle by : Martin Swales
Download or read book The German Novelle written by Martin Swales and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-23 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martin Swales explores the interrelation in the novelle of aesthetic theory and textual practice, suggesting that the characteristic mode of the novelle is a specific kind of narrative constellation advocated by theoreticians and practiced by writers. The author’s theory not only serves to illuminate our understanding of the novelle but also advances our knowledge of genre theory. Swales analyzes theoretical writings as if they themselves are literary texts that reflect the age in which they were written. By considering them in relation to seven principal topics, he shows how they share a central concern with cases that are exceptions to the normal social order. The response of each author implies the reluctance of society to have its premises called into question and to adjust in such a way as to accommodate these cases. Swales applies this theory to seven nineteenth-century novellen. Originally published in 1977. Download or read book The London Merchant written by George Lillo and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1965-01-01 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mrs. Millwood is beautiful, intelligent, and ambitious, but London gives her no means of support except to seduce men. Love for her leads eighteen-year-old Barnwell to deceit, theft, and murder. "What are your laws," Mrs. Millwood asks, "but the fool?s wisdom and the coward?s valor, the instrument and screen of all your villainies by which you punish in others what you act out yourselves, had you been in their circumstances? The judge who condemns the poor man for being a thief had been a thief himself, had he been poor. Thus you go on deceiving and being deceived, harassing, plaguing, and destroying one another, but women are your universal prey." First performed in 1731, The London Merchant became on of the most popular plays of the century. A chronicler of the age, Theophilus Cibber called it "almost a new species of tragedy."
