Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive introduction to school guidance and counselling services in Hong Kong. It draws extensively on current research in the field, with a special emphasis on how guidance and counselling could be systematically planned to meet the personal, social and educational and career needs of students. The chapters discuss how counselling could be infused into school activities by employing a team approach, wherein all staff members have specified roles to play. The book also focuses on the Confucian heritage practices in Chinese societies, such as the emphasis on examinations, the contestations between discipline and guidance, and the role of class teachers in school guidance.

Book excerpt: Purpose of the Study The purpose of this thesis is to survey the current practices in guidance services in the public secondary schools of British Columbia and on the basis of the survey findings, together with a review of the literature of guidance, to present recommendations for a feasible program of guidance services. More specifically, the objectives are: 1. To determine the practices that are currently being utilized in guidance services in the public secondary schools of British Columbia. 2. To examine and compare the guidance services presently being offered in the secondary schools, according to enrollment, with an established standard. 3. To offer recommendations which will afford a feasible program and pattern of development for guidance services in the public secondary schools of British Columbia. Procedures The study involved the public secondary schools in British Columbia containing grades eight through twelve. During the 1966- 67 school year there were sixty-three secondary schools in British Columbia. Each secondary school principal was mailed a questionnaire, developed by the writer, and designed to survey the following areas: I Organization and Administration II Individual Inventory Service III Information Service IV Counseling Service V Placement Service VI Follow-up and Evaluation Service Each of the sixty-three principals responded for a one hundred percent return of the survey instrument. In order to determine the differences in the current practices in guidance services between secondary schools in British Columbia, the data are presented in tabular form and the number of schools in each category responding to an item is expressed in percentage. The categories, defined by enrollment, include small (under 400 students), medium-size (between 400 and 800 students), and large (over 800 students) secondary schools. The questionnaire analysis noted those practices in which a majority of the secondary schools claim to follow and where a relationship was evident between school size and the frequency of the practice. Conclusions The following conclusions were drawn from the data analyzed in this investigation: 1. The variation in guidance services between schools is considerable and is largely the result of a disregard for the necessary administrative aspects. 2. The differences in guidance programs as indicated by school size are due to the availability of fewer guidance trained personnel in the smaller schools. 3. The Department of Education's role in promoting more comprehensive guidance services in the secondary schools of the Province could be enhanced by providing more assistance and direction to schools and school districts. Recommendations On the basis of the findings and conclusions of this study, it is recommended: 1. That the administrative aspects of the guidance services in each secondary school be assigned to one faculty member with training in guidance and counseling. 2. That each secondary school appoint a guidance committee which could then establish goals and objectives for the guidance services and provide definitions of roles for the guidance personnel. 3. That provision be made for regular in- service training of teaching faculty regarding their role in the school's over-all guidance services program. 4. That incentives be offered in order to attract qualified guidance personnel to schools and school districts which are presently unable to attract such personnel. 5. That the British Columbia Department of Education urge all counselors in all secondary schools to possess the minimum academic requirements for counselors as defined by the Department. 6. That the Department of Education assume a leadership role in providing directives and assistance to all schools in the development of their guidance services.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Career Development in the Schools describes a dynamic process that continues to evolve in its rationale and practice. In many schools and in a variety of scholarly writings, the status of career development is controversial. Some observers assert that career development should be seen as a by-product of all of the knowledge and activities that are incorporated in the educational experience. In this view, career development tends to be seen as a random process that happens in a natural, almost magical way, without specific direction or structured form. However, most career theorists would argue that the career development of students should be a major mission of the school—a process too important to be only a by-product of scattered learning and activities that are inherently uneven from student to student. The prevailing contemporary perspective contends that career development in the schools should be planned, have its own content derived from research and theory, be systematically executed, and use methods that are relevant to the developmental levels of students throughout elementary, middle, and senior high schools. To further such ends, several national models of content and practice have been formulated by the American School Counselor Association, the National Career Development Revised Guidance Project, and by other organizations to identify the components, competencies, and outcomes that students of different ages and aspirations need to acquire as they grow in maturity. Several of these models are discussed at length in the various chapters of this book.

Book excerpt: Guidance and Counselling in Schools: A Response to Change is a comprehensive account of the origins and basis of guidance and counseling in British schools, as well as the principles underlying developments in guidance and counseling. Emphasis is on principles as they manifest themselves within the existent structure, traditions, and potentialities of the British educational system. This book is comprised of 12 chapters and begins with a historical overview of vocational guidance in Britain and an assessment of its current and future prospects. The next chapter focuses on the selection examination at 11-plus in secondary education as a major act of educational guidance in Britain, paying particular attention to the criticisms against it and changes in public attitudes toward the selection examination. The influence of social class on educational opportunity is also discussed, along with the trend toward social democracy in education. The remaining chapters explore the practice of classifying children by streaming on the basis of ability and aptitude; teaching and evaluation in the classroom; child-centered education; the child study movement; and the limitations of counseling. This monograph should be of interest to parents, teachers, and students, as well as educational psychologists, school administrators, and policymakers.
