Book excerpt: Excerpt from Speeches and Addresses, on the Threshold of Eighty Mr. President and Gentlemen: It is very interesting that the twentieth successive dinner which you have given me on my birthday should coincide with this club coming of age. Twenty-one years of club life to those who have been members from the beginning is always full of charm. The club is the nearest association to the family possible without domestic ties. A man who has a sympathetic disposition and loves to mingle with his fellowmen upon a basis more intimate than is afforded in business will have among the living, and, in memory, those who have passed away, an invaluable asset of choicest friendships. In no place as in the club does human nature reveal itself at its best and at its worst. Members become natural with each other and their selfishness or their good fellowship increases with the years. I recall those who were present at that first birthday celebration, and each one of them since has had distinctive features. It has differed from all other affairs of the kind because of its publicity and its freedom of discussion. The influence of words uttered here or revelations made here have at times reached far beyond the limits of this city. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Speeches and Addresses: Delivered in the Congress of the United States, and on Several Public Occasions The friends of the late Henry Winter Davis have though it due to his memory, and to the remembrance of the public service which he fulfilled both in the congress of the United States and before the people of Maryland, especially in behalf of emancipation, that all such adequate and proper account of it as could be had should be put into some convenient shape, and published, as a contribution to the history of the times, as well as constituting a suitable record of that service. To this end they have collected all the reports and accounts of the speeches and addresses delivered by him, and, upon examination of them, it was resolved to publish all such as were regularly and correctly reported, and which he had gathered or retained precisely as they were printed and as he left them, without correction and without omission, expect in two instances alone, where direct allusion by name was made to persons, which allusions they believe Mr. Davis would have omitted if he had lived to correct these speeches for the press. In these collection have also been included such documents and reports as were wholly written by him, although the course recommended in such papers was not adopted, or the measures or men condemned thereby were approved, by the party he supported or by the people to whom he appealed. For it has not been thought admissible to correct any part of the account, nor to withhold any part of it, unless by reason of an insufficient and inadequate report it was plainly no true record of what was said. The imitative colonial propensity of mind still dwells with us. There is still work for the Puritan Spirit which would go its own way and think its own thoughts. It is not altogether our own church, even now in the world of ideas in art, and literature, and among certain elements of our society. Who, for instance, has not heard the profound saying that in this country nature does not lend itself to art Have we not, then, the glories of morning and of evening, the mists of dawn, the radiance of midday, the lightning of the noontide ocean, the infinite beauties of sea and sky, of river and mountain? When nature does not lend itself to art it is because there is no art able to borrow. Let the right men come in the right spirit and they will have no trouble with nature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Addresses and Speeches: On Various Occasions Some circumstances, connected with the progress and close of my late Congressional career, have induced me to comply, not altogether unwillingly, with the suggestion of friends, - that whatever I have said on public questions, should be placed within the convenient reach and reference of such as may care to know any thing about my course. I have ventured to think, too, that this volume would not be entirely unacceptable to the people of Massachusetts, and particularly to the people of Boston, to whom I enjoyed, and in whose service most of these Addresses and Speeches were made. They are given here just as they were delivered, and many of them printed, at the time, - with no other change than the correction of a few inaccuracies in matter of form, or, it may be, in matter of fact. They thus contain, - not what I might have said, or might now say, - but what I actually did say, on the subjects to which they relate, during sixteen or seventeen years of public employment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Speeches and Addresses: Political, Literary and Religious Many of my friends have asked me to publish in the more permanent form of a book some of the speeches and addresses that I have had the honour of making before a great variety of audiences during my career. This request I gladly comply with, and I use the first break in a life-long series of pressing business and political engagements to prepare the book for publication. While a man makes many enemies by frankly speaking his mind, as it has been my principle and my habit to do, he makes many friends also; and I certainly have every reason to be thankful both for the number and for the constancy of my friends. Speaking, as I have done, on many subjects, and in support of many causes, I could not hope to carry with me in all things those who agreed with me in many things; but among those whose good opinion I valued, there have been few who were not willing to believe that I was no less candid when I differed from them than when I happened to express opinions that they cherished. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Newton Booth, of California, His Speeches and Addresses Every man who during his lifetime has been a public servant and educator, whose speeches and writings have been of such high character and permanent interest as to deserve preservation, has written and spoken his own biography. The record of the main incidents in his career are, how ever, an aid to an understanding of character, while the portrayal of characteristics gives a better knowledge of the man. There have lived men who commanded respect and fame for intellectual qualities only; others who were ad mirable also for the cardinal virtues; and a smaller num ber possessing high qualities both intellectual and moral, and gifted besides with attributes that endeared them personally to multitudes. Such men are rare, and when they pass away many are eager to learn all that may be told of them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nation and the Empire: Being a Collection of Speeches and Addresses Do not let me be thought to suggest that Imperial affairs are necessarily of greater dignity and importance than local affairs, or that a man is better employed in con cerning himself with the former rather than with the latter. The word Imperial has an imposing sound, but not every question properly so described is necessarily Of the first importance. And on the other hand there may be local controversies, in any part of the Empire, which are of supreme moment to the welfare of that part, and even of the whole. I have no idea Of extolling interest in the one, or depreciating interest in the other. The point is, that Imperial and local affairs are different in Character, and that the same men are not generally, or Often, equally well qualified, by inclination and experience, to deal with both. A system, which makes successful activity in the one sphere the only avenue to influence in the other, involves enormous waste. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Addresses and Speeches on Various Occasions, From 1878 to 1886 Another Serial Number of our Proceedings is on our table this morning. It forms the conclusion of a new volume, which, thanks to the unwearied devotion of our Secretary, will soon be forthcoming. There is nothing more interesting in this number, - nor, indeed, in any Of the Serials or Volumes which have preceded it, I think, than the Extracts from the Journal of Thomas Hutchinson, Governor of Massachusetts, containing the record of his conversation with George III., in July, 1774, im mediately on the arrival of Hutchinson in England, after he was superseded in the Government Of Massachusetts by General Gage. We are indebted for this valuable paper to our Honorary Member, the historian bancroft, from whom it came to Mr. Frothingham; and the paper is verified by the Signature of Edward Everett, under whose direction - while he was our Minister at London - the copy was made by his Secretary Of Legation, Mr. Francis R. Rives, in 1843. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Masterpieces: Early Speeches, Springfield Speech, Cooper Union Speech, Inaugural Addresses, Gettysburg Address, Selected Letters, Lincoln's Lost Speech This biding his time to abolish slavery has almost ih explicably raised the question whether Lincoln really cared to put an end to the vile traffic, or whether he merely used the Emancipation edict as a war measure tactically directed against the South in rebellion. We need hardly argue the point with those who have raised it, since nothing, we hold, is plainer in the entire history of Lincoln's career than his sympathy for the slave and his abhorrence of an institution that kept him in a hated and cruel bondage. He was not, it is true, a negrophilist. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of Public Men: With Speeches and Addresses The Reminiscences and other articles in this book were written (with a few exceptions) between the years 1872 and 1876, when South Carolina was under Radical and Negro rule, before the State was "redeemed, regenerated and disenthralled" through the influence and by the efforts of General Wade Hampton. Hence the frequent allusions of the writer to the lamentable condition of South Carolina. The articles selected by the wife (unassisted) are of historic value, interesting to the surviving actors in the troublous times of Nullification, Secession and Disunion, and giving information to many of the present generation who are unacquainted with the history of that period. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Speeches and Addresses of William E. Russell In editing these Speeches and Addresses of the Hon. William E. Russell, the Editor has not attempted to make a complete collection of them, but has endeavored to select such as might have a more than temporary interest as well from their intrinsic merit as from the interest in the general subject. Many speeches of value in themselves have been omitted, owing to their temporary or local character. In pursuance of this plan, it has been thought best to omit all his municipal addresses and messages. In making the selection from over two hundred and fifty political speeches, the Editor has endeavored to form a series treating of the tariff in as many different phases as possible, and of its effect upon the various industries of Massachusetts and New England. He has also included some speeches which illustrate the marked personal characteristics and style of Governor Russell's campaign arguments. Many of the addresses, and substantially all the political speeches as published, have been collected from reports in the newspapers made at the time of delivery, and may to some degree lack the finish which would come from more elaborate preparation and revision. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Addresses, Speeches, Lectures, and Letters Upon Various Subjects The Addresses, Speeches, Lectures, etc., etc., which appear in this volume have been selected from many others, and are intended to be preserved in this form for the use of those who, years hence, may be inter ested in what is substantially a record of my feelings and views upon important subjects in very interesting periods of our national history. The addresses delivered at Fort Wayne, Ind., in 1861 and 1865 can hardly fail, at any time, to be inter esting, as they present the prevailing sentiment of the people of the Northern States at the commencement and the close of the civil war. The letters, which were written in London for the New York T rz'bnne, were copied by a great many newspapers, and very widely circulated and favorably commented upon in all parts of the country. They were written and the Cambridge lectures were delivered when financial and economic questions were engaging public attention - questions that have lost none of their interest - the definite solution of which seems to be far in the future.
