Book excerpt: Recent efforts to determine worldwide patterns of shoreline change have been stimulated by growing property losses from such coastal problems as erosion, flooding, and storm surges. Much of the damage stems directly from the growing intensity of construction and development along coastlines, among the most hazardous of the world's environments. But losses in many locations have been inexplicably large, raising speculation that changing patterns of shoreline erosion may be partially responsible. Although the 500-kilometer-long Oregon coast has been classified as retrograding-submergent and displays landforms deserving of such a classification, measurable retrograding within the past century has been confined to a relatively small part of the shoreline. Comparison of early maps and 1939 air photos with more recent imagery indicates that most of the sandy shore has been stable, with some evidence of isolated prograding.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patterns of beach erosion and accretion due to jetty construction are examined for the coast of Oregon. All jetty systems are included with the exception of those on the Columbia River, making a total of nine systems. All evidence indicates that these areas of the Oregon coast are experiencing a seasonal reversal in the sand drift, but with a zero or near zero net drift over a several years time span. Thus, shoreline changes resulting from jetty construction are not the usual examples of jetties blocking a net drift as found in southern California and elsewhere. In general, accretion of the shoreline took place adjacent to the jetties following their construction, both to the north and south. This accretion resulted mainly from the embayment formed between the jetty and the pre-jetty shoreline, the embayment becoming filled until the shoreline is straight and again in equilibrium with the waves such that there is a zero net sand drift. In some cases, as at the entrance to Yaquina Bay, the jetties are oblique to the trend of the shoreline and so produced a protected zone from the waves where accretion could occur. Sand for the accretion adjacent to the jetties was derived from beach erosion at greater distances from the jetties. The severity of the erosion depended on the total amount of sand required for the beach accretion to a new equilibrium, and the length of beach that was undergoing erosion. When only a short stretch of beach occurs to one side of the jetties, as at Bayocean Spit, then the resulting erosion was particularly severe, in that case leading to the breaching of the spit. A computer model is developed to simulate the shoreline changes that occurred following construction of the jetties on the Siuslaw River mouth. The model demonstrates deposition next to the jetty to fill the embayment created by the jetty, and erosion at greater distances from the jetty. The shoreline advances of the model agreed closely with the actual shoreline changes found in surveys following jetty construction.

Book excerpt: Tide gauges show that global sea level has risen about 7 inches during the 20th century, and recent satellite data show that the rate of sea-level rise is accelerating. As Earth warms, sea levels are rising mainly because ocean water expands as it warms; and water from melting glaciers and ice sheets is flowing into the ocean. Sea-level rise poses enormous risks to the valuable infrastructure, development, and wetlands that line much of the 1,600 mile shoreline of California, Oregon, and Washington. As those states seek to incorporate projections of sea-level rise into coastal planning, they asked the National Research Council to make independent projections of sea-level rise along their coasts for the years 2030, 2050, and 2100, taking into account regional factors that affect sea level. Sea-Level Rise for the Coasts of California, Oregon, and Washington: Past, Present, and Future explains that sea level along the U.S. west coast is affected by a number of factors. These include: climate patterns such as the El NiƱo, effects from the melting of modern and ancient ice sheets, and geologic processes, such as plate tectonics. Regional projections for California, Oregon, and Washington show a sharp distinction at Cape Mendocino in northern California. South of that point, sea-level rise is expected to be very close to global projections. However, projections are lower north of Cape Mendocino because the land is being pushed upward as the ocean plate moves under the continental plate along the Cascadia Subduction Zone. However, an earthquake magnitude 8 or larger, which occurs in the region every few hundred to 1,000 years, would cause the land to drop and sea level to suddenly rise.

Book excerpt: In 1968, the 90th Congress authorized this national appraisal of shore erosion and shore protection. To satisfy the purposes of the authorizing legislation, a family of 12 related reports has been published. They are: Regional inventory reports; Shore protection guidelines; Shore management guidelines; and Report on the national shoreline study. This report presents an inventory of the physical characteristics, historical changes, and ownership and use of the coastal shorelines of Washington and Oregon, including major bays and estuaries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of the physical changes of the Oregon coast (from the California boundary to the Columbia River) which have occurred since settlement are discussed. Included are changes of the beaches and the immediate backshore, of the active dunes near the shore, and of the estuaries. Some discussion is of a more general nature, to place the specific studies in the proper perspective. The time span, arbitrarily chosen, is the period since white settlement, a little more than a century. This is the time for which historical records are available to document the nature of the changes. The purpose is to describe, measure, and explain some of the Oregon coast changes within the limitations of time and resources available. Special emphasis is placed on the beaches, dunes, and tidal marshes in the estuaries, where changes have occurred and are occurring. Many aspects of these three categories and many lines of investigation had to be left unstudied. (Author).
