Book Synopsis Recent Sediments of Monterey Bay by : Thomas E. Yancey
Download or read book Recent Sediments of Monterey Bay written by Thomas E. Yancey and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The heavy mineralogy of the sand fraction for beach samples reported by Sayles (1966) and 10 new offshore samples from South Monterey Bay was determined optically. For each sample the percentage of the more diagnostic transparent minerals is plotted graphically in order of persistence: zircon, garnet, biotite, apatite, clinozoisite and epidote, lawsonite, green hornblende, oxy-horneblende, glaucophane, sphene, zoisite, augite, jadeite, hypersthene, enstatite, and tremolite and actinolite. Additional data on accessory transparent minerals, composite grains (rock fragments) and opaque minerals are listed with each graph. An updated bibliography is presented to include all new work on the geology and sediment of Monterey Bay. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few fields of research in the earth sciences have produced as much data and litera ture as the study of carbonate sediments and rocks. The past 25 years in particular, have seen a significant increase in studies concerning modern marine and fresh water carbonates. With the present worldwide interest in oceanographic research, marine carbonates have received the bulk of the attention, particularly with respect to shallow-water sediments. However, in terms of the variety of environ ments, compositions and modes of formation, non-marine carbonates probably encompass a wider spectrum than do marine types. Our purpose is to present a two-volume treatise on carbonate sediments and rocks, both marine and non-marine. We have confined ourselves to the discussion of modern (Holocene) environments, sediments and components, assuming that the compilation of these data will not only be relevant to those working with modern carbonates but will also serve as a necessary reference source for those interested in ancient analogs. The first volume, by MILLIMAN, deals almost exclu sively with marine environments, while the second volume, by MULLER and FORST NER, will concentrate on the non-marine carbonates.

Book Synopsis Suspended Matter in Monterey Bay, California by : Maria Kazanowska
Download or read book Suspended Matter in Monterey Bay, California written by Maria Kazanowska and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The distribution of suspended particulate matter in Monterey Bay, California, was characterized by the ratio of light scattering at 45 degrees to that at 135 degrees, by particle volume distributions, and by constituent distributions. X-ray methods were used to identify the mineral constituents. Distributions were highly variable with time and locations. Although high scattering ratios and high volume distributions were found in the same vicinity, there appeared to be a lack of correlation between their absolute values. Scattering ratios were found to vary greatly with depth. (Author).
