Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recent Researches Relating to the Etiology and Specific Treatment of Yellow Fever I say in my report: The mucous membrane of the stomach is always found to be more or less hyper emic; the congestion commonly is not general, but is confined to smaller or larger spots or districts, in which it is observed to proceed from one or more centers. From these centers it extends or radiates in a lesser degree, either gradually to be lost or to pass over to another congested district. It is owing to this peculiarity of the congestion that it presents no uniformity of °character, but is observed to spread irregularly over larger or smaller portions of the membrane (schmidt). Book excerpt: Excerpt from Yellow Fever: Etiology, Symptoms and Diagnosis The claims, by various authors up to 1890, of having discovered the specific cause of yellow fever, were all effectually disposed of by the investigations of Sternberg. Since that time several investigators have reported finding the specific causative agent; but it is notable that no two of the micro organisms for which this claim was made were identical, and since only one could be the specific organism, it is evident that the others could have no real claim to specificity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Yellow Fever and Its Treatment: New and Successful Plan Having been successful in the treatment of thirty-one cases of pernicious Malarial Fever, or more commonly known by the name of Yellow Fever, that had all the features of the disease, as it prevailed in J acksonville, Florida, in the months of August, September and October, of 1877, I thought proper I should make known to the pro fession and the public my course and plan of treat ment used and followed out at that time, believing it to be a humane act, though with some hesitancy, on the ground that some of my medical brethren, who have had experience in the treatment of this disease may entertain doubt that thirty-one case should have been treated without one death. However, let this be as it may, the facts as above stated are true. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Etiology of Yellow Fever: A Preliminary Note Taken in connection with Case 11, in which we have been unable to find any other source of infection than the bite of an infected mos quito, five days preceding the attack, the case of Dr. C. (case 10, Table III) becomes strongly confirmatory of the same origin. We will now briefly give the history of the third case of yellow fever that has occurred at Columbia Barracks during the period August 17 to October 13, 1900. In the light of Cases 10 and 11, we consider this case of sufficient importance to be here included, especially as it is one that might be possibly designated as a case of accidental infection by a mosquito. Book Synopsis Epidemic Invasions by : Mariola Espinosa
Download or read book Epidemic Invasions written by Mariola Espinosa and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-11-15 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early fall of 1897, yellow fever shuttered businesses, paralyzed trade, and caused tens of thousand of people living in the southern United States to abandon their homes and flee for their lives. Originating in Cuba, the deadly plague inspired disease-control measures that not only protected U.S. trade interests but also justified the political and economic domination of the island nation from which the pestilence came. By focusing on yellow fever, Epidemic Invasions uncovers for the first time how the devastating power of this virus profoundly shaped the relationship between the two countries. Yellow fever in Cuba, Mariola Espinosa demonstrates, motivated the United States to declare war against Spain in 1898, and, after the war was won and the disease eradicated, the United States demanded that Cuba pledge in its new constitution to maintain the sanitation standards established during the occupation. By situating the history of the fight against yellow fever within its political, military, and economic context, Espinosa reveals that the U.S. program of sanitation and disease control in Cuba was not a charitable endeavor. Instead, she shows that it was an exercise in colonial public health that served to eliminate threats to the continued expansion of U.S. influence in the world.

Book Synopsis Saving Lives, Buying Time by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Saving Lives, Buying Time written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-09-09 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than 50 years, low-cost antimalarial drugs silently saved millions of lives and cured billions of debilitating infections. Today, however, these drugs no longer work against the deadliest form of malaria that exists throughout the world. Malaria deaths in sub-Saharan Africaâ€"currently just over one million per yearâ€"are rising because of increased resistance to the old, inexpensive drugs. Although effective new drugs called "artemisinins" are available, they are unaffordable for the majority of the affected population, even at a cost of one dollar per course. Saving Lives, Buying Time: Economics of Malaria Drugs in an Age of Resistance examines the history of malaria treatments, provides an overview of the current drug crisis, and offers recommendations on maximizing access to and effectiveness of antimalarial drugs. The book finds that most people in endemic countries will not have access to currently effective combination treatments, which should include an artemisinin, without financing from the global community. Without funding for effective treatment, malaria mortality could double over the next 10 to 20 years and transmission will intensify.
