It examines three major themes througout this period: - Civil Rights, tracing the story of the black population from emancipation through to the 1960s. It asks of these and other minorities how far have different social groups in the USA achieved equality and freedom - Foreign policy, examining the reasons for and the results of the USAs transition from isolationism to worldwide involvement in many arenas. - Industrial growth and change, investigating the USA's development as an economic superpower and the problems and opportunities this has created at home and in the wider world. Modern America is written and edited by leading practitioners who have applied two decades of experience in history curriculum development to the challenge of helping students make the leap from middle to senior secondary schhol. It combines clear explanation with a source-based, enquiry-led approach. It offers a clear and penetrating narrative which gives students a deep insight into the issues required for understanding the development of the contemporary USA, thorough exam preparation through carefully designed tasks and a wide range of revision strategies including structured content summaries.

Book excerpt: In the wake of the Civil War, every aspect of American life was to be shaped anew by the energies of a nation now reborn. The remarkable story of the growth these energies achieved is told here--beginning with General Grant's historic ride into the little village of Appomattox and the Battle of Appomattox Court House, and taking the reader up through the extraordinary staccato of modern-day political events. In this newly expanded and completely up-to-date edition, Foster Rhea Dulles vividly depicts the individuals, episodes, and ideas that have guided the course of over a hundred years of American history: reconstruction in the South, the westward surge, Populism and Progressivism, the New Deal, the impact of the Vietnamese conflict, and the Negro revolution on the American conscience. The United States Since 1865 is a record not only of political and economic events, but of social and cultural developments as well. New directions in literature and the arts, the advent of Henry Ford's Model-T and pioneer motion picture theaters, the cultural élan brought to the White House during the Kennedy years--these too contributed to the making of modern America. Written for the general reader as well as the student of American history, this authoritative work--along with its companion volume, The United States to 1865--provides a highly readable and thoroughly up-to-date reassessment of America's heritage to her citizens and to the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recent History of the United States The period covered in this narrative falls between two eras. It is preceded by the age of national growth across the continent, in which one frontier after another was absorbed by society. It seems likely to be followed by an era of American permeation of the world. The Civil War and Reconstruction furnished much of its spiritual background, but belonged to the period that was gone. The World War was the natural outgrowth of the rivalries of the age itself. Separated from the past by one period of reconstruction, and from the future by another, the years 1877 to 1921 have a distinct unity as the period in which the new nation of the Western Hemisphere found itself and realized its powers. The years are substantially the age of Roosevelt, although they overlap a little at either end of the public life of that statesman. More than any other American, he seems to have personified his generation, and although others may have thought more deeply, or contributed more permanently to the advancement of American ideals, his virtues and defects are those that illustrate best the American character at the meeting of the centuries. I owe much of what is good in this book to the careful criticism of my wife, and the patient forbearance of my secretary, Miss Caroline W.Munro. To the generosity of my commanding officer in the World War, Colonel Charles W. Weeks, G.S., I owe my opportunity to see in action much of the vast machine with which the United States realized its determination to maintain its ideal of democracy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its original landmark publication in 1980, A People's History of the United States has been chronicling American history from the bottom up, throwing out the official version of history taught in schools -- with its emphasis on great men in high places -- to focus on the street, the home, and the, workplace. Known for its lively, clear prose as well as its scholarly research, A People's History is the only volume to tell America's story from the point of view of -- and in the words of -- America's women, factory workers, African-Americans, Native Americans, the working poor, and immigrant laborers. As historian Howard Zinn shows, many of our country's greatest battles -- the fights for a fair wage, an eight-hour workday, child-labor laws, health and safety standards, universal suffrage, women's rights, racial equality -- were carried out at the grassroots level, against bloody resistance. Covering Christopher Columbus's arrival through President Clinton's first term, A People's History of the United States, which was nominated for the American Book Award in 1981, features insightful analysis of the most important events in our history. Revised, updated, and featuring a new after, word by the author, this special twentieth anniversary edition continues Zinn's important contribution to a complete and balanced understanding of American history.
