This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume is indexed by Thomson Reuters CPCI-S (WoS).This volume brings together the most exciting ideas of international, and especially European, researchers concerning the latest developments in severe plastic deformation techniques and in the thermomechanical processing of materials for both structural and functional applications. The areas of interest include not only the conventional hot- and cold-deformation of metals but also recently developed severe plastic deformation processes for the production of ultra-fine and nanostructured materials. In particular, the following specific topics are covered: Multifunctional nanostructured coatings, Modelling and recrystallization, Nanostructured materials and Severe plastic deformation, Hot plastic deformation, Process Mechanics and Microstructure. It is to be noted that this volume honors Prof. Enrico Evangelista on the occasion of his 70th birthday. The professor has been working in the field of materials science for more than 30 years and been a faculty member of the Marche Polytechnic University of Ancona since 1982. He is a fellow of ASM International and has been very active in a range of research activities; publishing over 300 papers in collaboration with other highly-regarded scientists throughout the world. The quality of the present papers reflects the exacting standards of the professor. European and other researchers share findings and thoughts regarding severe plastic deformation techniques and the thermo-mechanical processing of materials for both structural and functional applications. The conventional hot and cold deformation of metals is explored of course, but also recently developed processes for producing ultra-fine and nanostructured materials. Of the 60 papers presented, 40 are represented here, exploring such topics as the nanoindentation of silicon, developing superplasticity in metallic alloys by applying severe plastic deformation, plastic flow and grain refinement under simple shear-based severe plastic deformation processing, engendering ultra-fine microstructures in titanium with powder metallurgy for improved ductility and strength, the influence of dynamic restoration in failure at elevated temperatures, and the role of boundaries in the control of deformation rate and strength of crystalline materials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manufacturing, reduced to its simplest form, involves the sequencing of product forms through a number of different processes. Each individual step, known as an unit manufacturing process, can be viewed as the fundamental building block of a nation's manufacturing capability. A committee of the National Research Council has prepared a report to help define national priorities for research in unit processes. It contains an organizing framework for unit process families, criteria for determining the criticality of a process or manufacturing technology, examples of research opportunities, and a prioritized list of enabling technologies that can lead to the manufacture of products of superior quality at competitive costs. The study was performed under the sponsorship of the National Science Foundation and the Defense Department's Manufacturing Technology Program.

Book excerpt: Stainless steels represent a quite interesting material family, both from a scientific and commercial point of view, following to their excellent combination in terms of strength and ductility together with corrosion resistance. Thanks to such properties, stainless steels have been indispensable for the technological progress during the last century and their annual consumption increased faster than other materials. They find application in all these fields requiring good corrosion resistance together with ability to be worked into complex geometries. Despite to their diffusion as a consolidated materials, many research fields are active regarding the possibility to increase stainless steels mechanical properties and corrosion resistance by grain refinement or by alloying by interstitial elements. At the same time innovations are coming from the manufacturing process of such a family of materials, also including the possibility to manufacture them starting from metals powder for 3D printing. The Special Issue scope embraces interdisciplinary work covering physical metallurgy and processes, reporting about experimental and theoretical progress concerning microstructural evolution during processing, microstructure-properties relations, applications including automotive, energy and structural.

Book excerpt: Metallurgy and Design of Alloys with Hierarchical Microstructures covers the fundamentals of processing-microstructure-property relationships and how multiple properties are balanced and optimized in materials with hierarchical microstructures widely used in critical applications. The discussion is based principally on metallic materials used in aircraft structures; however, because they have sufficiently diverse microstructures, the underlying principles can easily be extended to other materials systems. With the increasing microstructural complexity of structural materials, it is important for students, academic researchers and practicing engineers to possess the knowledge of how materials are optimized and how they will behave in service. The book integrates aspects of computational materials science, physical metallurgy, alloy design, process design, and structure-properties relationships, in a manner not done before. It fills a knowledge gap in the interrelationships of multiple microstructural and deformation mechanisms by applying the concepts and tools of designing microstructures for achieving combinations of engineering properties—such as strength, corrosion resistance, durability and damage tolerance in multi-component materials—used for critical structural applications. Discusses the science behind the properties and performance of advanced metallic materials Provides for the efficient design of materials and processes to satisfy targeted performance in materials and structures Enables the selection and development of new alloys for specific applications based upon evaluation of their microstructure as illustrated in this work

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the industrial manufacturing of metals, the achievement of products featuring desired characteristics always requires the control of process parameters in order to obtain a suitable microstructure. The strict relationship among process parameters, microstructure, and mechanical properties is a matter of interest in different areas, such as foundry, plastic forming, sintering, welding, etc., and regards both well-established and innovative processes. Nowadays, circular economy and sustainable technological development are dominant paradigms and impose an optimized use of resources, a lower energetic impact of industrial processes and new tasks for materials and products. In this frame, this Special Issue covers a broad range of research works and contains research and review papers.

Book excerpt: The papers collected in this special issue clearly reflect the modern research trends in materials science. These fields of specific attention are high-Mn TWIP steels, high-Cr heat resistant steels, aluminum alloys, ultrafine grained materials including those developed by severe plastic deformation, and high-entropy alloys. The major portion of the collected papers is focused on the mechanisms of microstructure evolution and the mechanical properties of metallic materials subjected to various thermo-mechanical, deformation or heat treatments. Another large portion of the studies is aimed on the elaboration of alloying design of advanced steels and alloys. The changes in phase content, transformation and particle precipitation and their effect on the properties are also broadly presented in this collection, including the microstructure/property changes caused by irradiation.
