Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recent Changes in the Citrus Industry of Israel In the next 8 years the present acres of bearing groves will provide the commercial production, which may be expected to approximate boxes of oranges, boxes of grapefruit, and boxes of lemons. There will not be any marked change in production until acreage yet to be planted begins to come into bearing in 1960. Then orange production may increase to about boxes per year. Restricted production Will limit the importance of the processing industry in the next 10 years unless unusual difficulties are encountered in marketing fresh fruit. At the production levels which Will prevail it may be expected that approximately boxes of oranges, boxes of grapefruit, and boxes of lemons Will be used for process ing. The most important product will be 65 Brix orange Jce concentrate which will be supplied to the British Ministry of Food for the child health program. About pounds of this product may be expected to be available for export in a normal year until 1958. Because of reduced citrus supplies, many citrus processing plants are canning other food items to utilize plant capacity. This is the most significant recent change. Experimentation is being carried on to develop a non-alcohol method of producing pectin and there is some experimentation in progress on frozen concentrates and dehydrated peel.
