Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zeolites and related microporous materials are used in oil processing and in the fine and petrochemical industries on a large scale. New applications of zeolites contribute to environmentally friendly processes and refined zeolites such as catalytic zeolite membranes and zeolites containing exhaust-pipe reactors are being introduced. Recent diversity in zeolite research has been fueled by the increase in number of microporous materials and the combination with interfacing science areas. The possibility to accommodate ions, large molecules or nanostructures in the crystalline matrix has been explored and the performance of electronic, acoustic and photonic modified response of the materials has been tested. This volume provides up-to-date information on new zeolite and related materials and composites, their applications, testing of new processes and techniques, and promising laboratory results as well. A vast amount of work from a fundamental aspect is incorporated. In particular, the combination of science and application offers useful information for readers interested in molecular sieves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in zeolites continues to grow, making it vital to keep up to date with recent findings. These proceedings include some of the latest discoveries in the zeolite field. Four plenary lectures provide in-depth coverage of key topics, namely the influence of diffusion on catalysis, recent advances in synthesis, modification of zeolites by alumination, and quantum chemical studies of acidity. These are followed by nineteen papers written by contributors from all over the world covering a wide range of material of current interest. Several synthetic studies are presented, including the introduction of heteroatoms to induce higher catalytic acidity. Acidity and catalysis are probed by solid-state NMR and discussed through theoretical calculations. Two papers are concerned with the growing interest in using zeolites to catalyze shape-selective organic reactions. There are specific studies of zeolite characterization by NMR and electron energy loss spectroscopy. There are also a number of quantum chemical papers on zeolite stability and on the location of adsorbed species. The material presented is particularly up-to-date and will be of considerable interest to all research groups involved in zeolite sciences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings reflect recent developments in the field of zeolite chemistry and catalysis with an emphasis on the role of a modifying component on the properties of the molecular sieve material. The plenary lectures and contributed papers concentrate on the problem of isomorphous substitution in a zeolitic framework; on the occlusion and the structure of metal, metal oxide, and metal sulphide clusters and complexes in the intracrystalline void volume of molecular sieves and zeolites as well as in the interlaminar space of layered compounds. Catalytic applications are discussed, not only in regard to traditional hydrocarbon transformation, but also in such areas as: reduction of SO2, decomposition of NO, reactions of sulphur containing compounds and conversion of CO, CO2 to hydrocarbons or of alcohols to oxygenated products. Because the book provides valuable data and information on new achievements in the zeolite material science and application, it will be of considerable interest to all research groups involved in zeolite science.

Book excerpt: Zeolites have been the focus of intensive activity and growth in applications over the past 25 years in ion exchange, in adsorp tion and in catalytic process technology. Beginning with the syn thetic zeolites A,X and Y, continuing into the emerging ZSM series, and including selected natural zeolites, applications span the range from large-scale purification and separation to such major petroleum and petrochemical processes as catalytic cracking and aromatics alkylation. The future promises several new areas of signiciant use as our energy resource base is expanded. As a result, a NATO Advanced Study Institute on Zeolites was held in Alcabideche, Portugal, May 1-12, 1983. Its purpose was to summarize the state-of-the-art in zeolite science and technology, with particular emphasis on recent developments. This summary is intended to complement presentations of the latest research results at the 1983 International Zeolites Association meeting in .Reno, Nevada - USA. Both the fundamentals concepts and industrial applications are addressed in the lectures of the Institute. Individual chapters cover historical development, structure, crystallography and synthesis techniques. Basic principles of adsorption, diffusion, ion exchange and acidity are reviewed. A section on catalysis addresses shape selectivity, transition metals, bifunctional catalysis and "methanol to-gasoline". Included in the section on industrial applications are chapters on reactor and adsorber design, catalytic cracking, xylene and n -paraffins isomerization, as well as ion exchange and adsorption.

Book excerpt: Zeolites and related molecular sieves have quickly become important pathways to new opportunities in the fields of oil processing and petrochemical synthesis. The signs of intense activity in both industry and academia are evident: burgeoning papers and patent applications; increasing numbers of industrial zeolite-based processes and their rapid expansion into organic chemicals manufacturing; recent progress in zeolite accessibility range, matrix behaviour, lattice components and satellite structures; and the recognition that zeolites, which are stable and can be regenerated, may be incorporated into new, environmentally friendly processes. This volume offers a thorough, up-to-date introduction to zeolites and such related materials as crystalline aluminium phosphates and clays. Its 16 chapters, each written by specialists, provide detailed treatments of zeolite theory (including a review of major developments), zeolite laboratory and research practice, and zeolite industry applications. Students and individuals entering the field will find Introduction to Zeolite Science and Practice a thorough guidebook. Experienced researchers will appreciate its in-depth coverage of the zeolite spectrum, including the latest views on zeolite structure, characterization and applications.

Book excerpt: In view of the substantial progress made in the last decade in the fields of zeolites and related materials it was decided to go for an extended 2nd Edition of "Introduction to Zeolite Science and Practice". Unfortunately - as often is the case - this process took more time than expected by the Editors. In the mean time some new texts on zeolites were issued. Nevertheless, the combination of data, discussion and dedication provided by the present book is a unique coverage of the field, in the opinion of the Editors. In the present Edition the number of chapters rose from 16-22. The contributions can be divided into three categories: updated chapters by the original authors, updated chapters by an expanded or new team of authors and completely new chapters. This 2nd Edition also contains new chapters on "Zeolite-based supramolecular assemblies" (by Dirk De Vos and Pierre Jacobs, experts in this area) and on "The use of bulky probe molecules" (by Paul Kunkeler, Roger Downing and one of the Editors). Finally, the super large pore zeolites and the fast growing area of ordered mesoporous materials are dealt with by Eelco Vogt, Charlie Kresge and and Jim Vartuli. The latter two authors belong to the discoverers of the M41S family of mesoporous materials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zeolite is a mineral that consists mainly of aluminosilicate, and its major commercial use is as a surfactant. Over the last decade, significant efforts have been devoted to the development of micro-mesoporous zeolite materials, which are also referred to as mesostructured zeolites. Zeolites show potential as heterogeneous catalysts for terpenes valorisation into fragrances and flavours, replacing the homogenous catalysts. The results of research on of zeolite catalysts for selective reduction of nitrogen oxides by C1-C4-hydrocarbons and ethanol are demonstrated, in particular, the selective reduction activity of Ag/BEA catalysts. The authors also explore the synthesis of hierarchical zeolites uzing green templates such as natural polymers, surfactants and biological agents, as traditional templates are expensive and toxic. The recent developments in dehydration of organics, organic/organic separation, desalination and gas separation using zeolite membranes are reviewed in detail. Studies on the synthesis of zeolites in alkali-activated materials and the physicochemical changes of alkali-activated materials induced by these zeolites are presented. Due to their stability, form selectivity, non-corrosiveness, and environmental compatibility, zeolites are suggested as a suitable option for the thermal catalytic cracking process. The authors provide fundamental research data on the Cuban zeolite in Detoxsan®, including its different medical applications in comparison to the available literature regarding the medical use of zeolites.
