Book excerpt: This report describes the results of a study of maximum likelihood receiver structures for direct sequence spread spectrum communications over channels with multipath distortion and narrowband interference, and several methods of assessing the bit error probability performance of bit-by-bit receivers and maximum likelihood receivers. This work is a continuation of work which focused on the performance of various methods of suppressing narrowband interference using spectral estimation. The previous work gave performance results in terms of SNR improvement provided by interference suppression. The previous results are extended in this report by deriving a receiver structure based on the maximum likelihood (minimum probability of error) principle. Error probability results given include simulation of a bit-by-bit receiver operated in conjunction with dispersive and nondispersive channels with narrowband interference. Also, a technique for assessing the error rate by averaging conditional probabilities is stated which applies to both fixed nondispersive and fixed dispersive channels, and bit-by-bit and maximum likelihood receivers. Probability of error results obtained using this approach are given. (Author).

Book excerpt: This report describes results of an investigation of narrowband interference suppression in a pseudo-noise (PN) spread spectrum digital communication system in which the signal is also distorted by channel multipath and fading. Techniques for determining the coefficients of a linear, interference suppression filter are described, which are based on linear prediction and conventional spectral analysis methods. Numerical results are presented on the effectiveness of the linear filter in suppressing the interference. Error rate results, obtained via Monte Carlo simulation are presented for a receiver that employs interference suppression and equalization for a fading multipath channel. (Author).

To combat this threat the GPS JPO initiated the Tactical GPS AntiJam Technology project, which yielded a prototype Digital Excision Filter (DEF) to remove narrowband jammers. This research describes the work performed to get tht DEF hardware operational and extends the previous research performed in this area. Comdisco's Signal Processing Worksystem was used to examine the effect of the DEF on the probability of bit error. This research uses peak to average correlation value, probability of bit error, and percent jammer power removed to examine the performance of the DEF. Fourteen jamming scenarios are examined using CW, pulsed CW, and broadband noise jammers. The DEF effectively rejected all of the jammers except the broadband noise jammer. In scenarios other than the broadband noise jammer, the DEF removed over 98% of the jammer power. The bit error rate curves show that the DEF significantly enhanced the performance of the system in extreme jamming environments. The results presented in this research show that the DEF is a viable, robust option to remove narrowband interference.

Book excerpt: This project is concerned with signal processing and coding techniques, which can improve the performance of spread-spectrum multiple-access systems. Specific topics investigated during the course of this project include: (1) Reduced-rank interference suppression; (2) Combined coding and interference suppression, (3) Joint transmitter-receiver optimization in the presence of multiple access interference; and (4) The effect of limited feedback on the performance of joint transmitter-receiver optimization schemes. The theory of large random matrices has been used to analyze the performance of both interference suppression and interference avoidance schemes. For example, we have used these techniques to analyze the performance of adaptive reduced- and full-rank least squares filtering for interference suppression with limited training. This analysis shows the effects of algorithm parameters, which determine the initialization and data windowing, along with system load and noise level. Other contributions include optimization of the ratio of pilot-to-data power and code rate with adaptive linear interference suppression, and signature optimization for combined interference avoidance and pre-equalization of multi-path. Transmitter optimization with limited feedback has also been considered, and bounds on the achievable performance as a function of feedback bits per dimension have been obtained. This project has resulted in a patent application for an adaptive reduced-rank filter, a paper award (for work on reduced-rank filtering), and numerous journal and conference publications on the preceding topics.

Book excerpt: This report presents research results focused on the mitigation of both narrowband and multiple access interference in direct sequence spread spectrum communication systems. Both linear and nonlinear adaptive algorithmic approaches are developed and reported. Specific attention has been paid to making the algorithmic practicable. In addition to the algorithmic development, a software simulation for a code division multiple access system is developed using a commercially available programming environment.

Book excerpt: A representation of nonstationary narrowband random processes in terms of nonstationary quadrature components is proposed in a form analogous to that used to represent wide sense stationary narrowband random processes. The representation is then applied t a specific case in which the nonstationary narrowband random process is generated by the product of white noise and a deterministic periodic signal and then is processed by a narrowband filter. This representation is used in the modeling of a bi-level pulsed noise jammer which is assumed to be present in a communication channel. The effect of such a jammer on a direct sequence, binary phase shift keyed (DS-BPSK) spread spectrum communication receiver is evaluated and characterized interns of the error rate performance of the receiver. Families of performance curves are plotted to demonstrate the effect of various parameters, namely signal-go-noise ratio, jammer power to signal power ratio, and processing gain, on the error rate of the complete spread spectrum receiver. The analysis carried out differentiates between two cases, namely fast jammers and slow jammers. However, the analytical tools developed make it possible to consider either one of the two cases without resorting to quasi-stationary arguments as has been done in the past. (Theses).

Book excerpt: The performance of a spread spectrum receiver preceded by an adaptive interference suppression (AIS) filter is determined for various CW jamming signals. An analysis and simulation of an AIS filter, covering the band from 200-300 MHz, implemented with a SAW device is presented. The simulation includes modeling of the SAW device, filter tap weights, Applebaum and power inversion adaptive control algorithms, and filter fabrication and circuitry errors. Both desired and interfering signals are generated in the simulator, passed through the AIS filter, and demodulated by a simulated matched filter. System performance was determined by measuring the improvement in pre-detection signal-to-jammer ratio (SJR) and post-detection signal-to-jammer plus noise ratio (SJNR) provided by the filter, and by computing the AIS filter convergence rate. To validate the AIS filter performance, the following additional simulation data was acquired both before andafter filter adaption: the filter frequency response, the receiver corrrelation response, and the pre-detection signal plus jammer plus noise spectrum.
