Book excerpt: The desire for precise knowledge about the location of a moving object at any time instant has motivated a great deal of scientific research recently. This is owing to a steady expansion of the range of enabling devices and technologies, as well as the need for seamless solutions for location-based services. Besides localization accuracy, a common requirement for emerging solutions is that they are cost-abstemious, both in terms of the financial and computational cost. Hence, development of localization strategies from already deployed technologies, e.g., from different terrestrial radio frequency sources is of great practical interest. Amongst other, these include localization strategies based on received signal strength (RSS), time of arrival, angle of arrival (AoA) or a combination of them. RSS-AoA-based Target Localization and Tracking in Wireless Sensor Networks presents recent advances in developing algorithms for target localization and tracking, reflecting the state-of-the-art algorithms and research achievements in target localization and tracking based on hybrid (RSS-AoA) measurements.Technical topics discussed in the book include:Centralized RSS-AoA-based Target LocalizationDistributed RSS-AoA-based Target LocalizationRSS-AoA-based Target Tracking via Maximum A Posteriori EstimatorRSS-AoA-based Target Tracking via Kalman FilterRSS-AoA-based via Sensor NavigationThis book is of interest for personnel in telecommunications and surveillance industries, military, smart systems, as well as academic staff and postgraduate/research students in telecommunications, signal processing, and non-smooth and convex optimization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, advances in signal processing have led to small, low power, inexpensive Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). The signal processing in WSN is different from the traditional wireless networks in two critical aspects: firstly, the signal processing in WSN is performed in a fully distributed manner, unlike in traditional wireless networks; secondly, due to the limited computation capabilities of sensor networks, it is essential to develop an energy and bandwidth efficient signal processing algorithms. Target localisation and tracking problems in WSNs have received considerable attention recently, driven by the necessity to achieve higher localisation accuracy, lower cost, and the smallest form factor. Received Signal Strength (RSS) based localisation techniques are at the forefront of tracking research applications. Since tracking algorithms have been attracting research and development attention recently, prolific literature and a wide range of proposed approaches regarding the topic have emerged. This thesis is devoted to discussing the existing WSN-based localisation and tracking approaches. This thesis includes five studies. The first study leads to the design and implementation of a triangulation-based localisation approach using RSS technique for indoor tracking applications. The presented work achieves low localisation error in complex environments by predicting the environmental characteristics among beacon nodes. The second study concentrates on investigating a fingerprinting localisation method for indoor tracking applications. The proposed approach offers reasonable localisation accuracy while requiring a short period of offline computation time. The third study focuses on designing and implementing a decentralised tracking approach for tracking multiple mobile targets with low resource requirements. Despite the interest in target tracking and localisation issues, there are few systems deployed using ZigBee network standard, and no tracking system has used the full features of the ZigBee network standard. Tracking through the ZigBee is a challenging task when the density of router and end-device nodes is low, due to the limited communication capabilities of end-device nodes. The fourth study focuses on developing and designing a practical ZigBee-based tracking approach. To save energy, different strategies were adopted. The fifth study outlines designing and implementing an energy-efficient approach for tracking applications. This study consists of two main approaches: a data aggregation approach, proposed and implemented in order to reduce the total number of messages transmitted over the network; and a prediction approach, deployed to increase the lifetime of the WSN. For evaluation purposes, two environmental models were used in this thesis: firstly, real experiments, in which the proposed approaches were implemented on real sensor nodes, to test the validity for the proposed approaches; secondly, simulation experiments, in which NS-2 was used to evaluate the power-consumption issues of the two approaches proposed in this thesis.

Book excerpt: The applications of positioning in wireless sensor networks include patient monitoring, asset tracking, and intelligent transportation including air traffic control. Popular methods are: received-signal-strength (RSS); time-of-arrival (TOA); time-difference-of-arrival (TDOA); and angle-of-arrival (AOA). Estimation is based on nonlinear equations constructed from measurements and knowledge of the anchor node geometry. In this thesis, anchor-based line-of-sight TOA and AOA are reviewed, and new techniques, namely DAOA (differential-angle-of-arrival) and hybrid TOA/DAOA are proposed for rotating laser implementation. For the TOA approach, a nonlinear Least Square Estimator (LSE) is applied to one- and two-dimensional systems, then the equations are linearized and solved by unconstrained/constrained LSE. This LSE procedure is also used for AOA. For DAOA, all the anchors are placed on a circle in order to simplify the solution, and then LSE is used to estimate an unlocalized node. The statistical accuracy of these methods, from simulation, is presented graphically for simple read-and-use application.

Book excerpt: Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have been implemented in a variety of scenarios, including tracking, smart grid, and equipment monitoring. Often times, devices in WSNs are required to know their locations with respect to other devices in the network. This act, known as localization, is the art of predicting the location of a device using anchor devices with known locations in the same network. Localization is essential for many critical industrial applications including underground mines, as the location of devices and employees is vital in helping to guarantee the safety of mining personnel. To the best of our knowledge, existing works have not yet performed extensive research into the use of numerical lters for localization accuracy enhancement. Other works have looked into the use of a speci c numerical lter, however none have covered all of the lters used in this paper. In this thesis, a WSN system that performs localization in an underground mine is proposed. This system uses the Zigbee communication protocol, received signal strength indicator (RSSI) measurements and the trilateration algorithm. The focus of the system is to maximize the accuracy of the predicted location by minimizing the radial error, which is the distance between the predicted location and actual location of a node. Point-to-point tests are performed to determine the best choice of hardware and RSSI model. These were determined to be Texas Instrument's (TI) CC2538 devices and the Piecewise RSSI model respectively. Next, trilateration experiments were performed using nodes containing the CC2538 devices positioned in a star topology. The localization results showed that the system was able to predict the location of a node with some error, which can be improved. Lastly, this thesis discusses the use of numerical ltering algorithms to enhance the accuracy of the predicted location by decreasing the radial error. These lters are as follows: the Statistical Average (SA) lter, the Gaussian lter, the Gaussian and Statistical Average (GSA) lter, the Kalman lter, the Kalman and Statistical Average (KSA) lter, as well as the Alpha-Trimmed Mean (ATM) lter.

Book excerpt: Data structures are essential principles applicable to any programming language in computer science. Data structures may be studied more easily with Python than with any other programming language because of their interpretability, interactivity, and object-oriented nature. Computers may store and process data at an extraordinary rate and with outstanding accuracy. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance that the data is efficiently stored and is able to be accessed promptly. In addition, data processing should take as little time as feasible while maintaining the highest possible level of precision. Advanced Applications of Python Data Structures and Algorithms assists in understanding and applying the fundamentals of data structures and their many implementations and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of various data structures. Covering key topics such as Python, linked lists, datatypes, and operators, this reference work is ideal for industry professionals, computer scientists, researchers, academicians, scholars, practitioners, instructors, and students.
