Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collected proclamations ascribed to two little-known post-exilic prophets, Haggai and Zechariah, represent a bridge between the traditions of classical Israelite religion and the dramatic changes essential to the preservation of the fragile Restoration community. Carroll Stuhlmueller's section-by-section, verse-by-verse analysis and exposition focus on the prophetic word as addressed not only to Israel in this "time of small beginnings" but also to the Church today. His primary concern is the theological message of the prophets, yet ever with an eye toward their historical context, literary form, and cultural setting.

Book excerpt: You stand at the altar and repeat the wonderful words of the marriage vows. As you exit the church, a congregation of loved ones and friends send up cheers of congratulations. But now, the marriage has fallen apart; here you are separated, perhaps even divorced. And instead of applause, you hear the sound of your tears and the footsteps of fear. You feel hurt, broken, empty, abandoned. The shame of failing is so overwhelming that for a while, you do an Oscar-winning job of faking for the loved ones, even the congregation, that all is well. All the while, the enemy is grabbing at your self-esteem and grabbing at your hope. But with God, there is no faking it. He sees and knows it all, even the thoughts and feelings you would like to pretend you don’t have. The congregation may no longer be cheering for you, but God is. Rather than letting you spiral into hopelessness, he cheers you on to hope again. He heals, he fills up the empty places in your heart, and he comforts. He restores hope. No one rebuilds hope like God. “Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God” (Psalms 42:11 KJV). This book includes poetry, devotionals, and encouragement to strengthen you as you partner with God in rebuilding your hope. Tears, fears, and jeers—he hears them all and responds with cheer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The photograph of three men spattered with red paint, their arms linked, marching to protest the Vietnam War, is an icon of the 1960s movement for social justice. David Dellinger is on one side, Robert Moses on the other. In the middle is Staughton Lynd, chairperson of the first march on Washington against the war, and former director of the Mississippi Freedom Schools. Thirty years later, Staughton Lynd here reaffirms ideas central to the New Left of the sixties: nonviolence, participatory democracy, an experiential approach to education, and anti-capitalism. In essays written between 1970 and 1995, he passionately defends the intellectual contribution of a movement often dismissed as mindlessly activist. In addition, he advocates direct, sustained involvement in meeting the needs of the working class and the poor. Each section of the book identifies major influences on Lynd's life as teacher, historian, lawyer, and organizer. In the section entitled "Accompaniment", Lynd suggests the relevance to the United States of the concepts of liberation theology which have revolutionized Central America. In "Socialism with a Human Face", he expresses continued allegiance to the socialist ideals exemplified by Simone Weft and E. P. Thompson. The final section, "Solidarity Unionism", deals with the self-activity of rank-and-file workers. Living Inside Our Hope will reach out to everyone who remembers the Meals of the sixties with nostalgia and to those, too young to remember, who are seeking a foundation on which to build their own social activism.

Book excerpt: When Crowley becomes the Zenith his Kindred was born to love, their enemies will learn that there’s nothing more dangerous than fated mates. Holden Bancroft was born with a better than average brain and not much else. Often described as strange and sickly, his attempts to conform only made him look foolish and a life-long diet of pills hasn’t provided a cure. Deciding to strengthen the only tool in his arsenal was liberating and learning became his greatest joy. But each episode is another reminder that his time is limited, and Holden intends to use everything he’s learned to help the small town of Hope before he dies. Alpha Crowley Lomond, Zenith of the Americas, isn’t exactly happy with his ascension. Leading isn’t the problem, it’s acting like he’s somehow better than every other shifter that chafes. But while living and working beside them may seem noble, Crowley is more than just an alpha. As Zenith, he’s their example, their teacher and guide, and the one they will turn to when their way of life is threatened. Meeting changes them in ways they never could have predicted and unveils a web of deceit that began long before they were born. Together, they will have to unravel the lies and reconcile the consequences if they are to protect the shifter way of life. Along the way, Crowley will become the Zenith his Kindred was born to love and their enemies will learn that there's nothing more dangerous than fated mates.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new book by Syrian architect Marwa al-Sabouni, seeks to understand how cities and buildings—scarred by conflict, blight, and pandemic—can be healed through design and urban mindfulness. When Marwa al-Sabouni published Battle for Home in 2016, she was a little-known architect, living in battle-ravaged Homs, Syria, unable to practice her profession. She turned her fierce intelligence to chronicling how her city and country were undone through decades of architectural mismanagement and mistakes. Once published, Marwa al-Sabouni’s book and story attracted the attention of international media—CNN, The New York Times—and received critical acclaim worldwide. The United Nations called on her for insights and expertise. She became a TED fellow, was invited to speak to audiences around the world, and some suggested she be nominated for architecture’s highest honor, the Pritzker Prize. Al-Sabouni’s deep understanding of Middle Eastern heritage and architecture gives her insight into a wide range of cities, informing her views on how cities work best, how they might fail, and what can be done to harmonize the lives of all their inhabitants. In this compelling new book, al-Sabouni draws together several narratives: her personal and professional observations of some of the world’s most fascinating cities, from Detroit to Helsinki; the lessons that Western societies might learn from Islamic culture and design; and philosophical reflections on how our personal and communal spaces can provide the basic foundations for happiness. Through this tapestry of personal experience, unblinking perspective, and insight, al-Sabouni offers real-world solutions—and hope—for how peace might be created through mindful urban planning.

Book excerpt: While working in construction in the mid-2000s, Nancy Welsh observed what struck her as a strange phenomenon: well-built homes were being demolished left and right, based on their modest size or prime location, to make way for million-dollar dream homes and high-end commercial development. In 2006, she decided to do something about it¿she founded Builders of Hope. Builders of Hope rehabilitates urban housing using their Extreme Green rehabilitation product and then sells or rents the revitalized housing to low and moderate income families. In the process, the organization saves millions of pounds of construction materials from landfills annually; turns unwanted or undesirable homes into attractive, affordable, and energy-efficient housing; develops and revitalizes neighborhoods; and provides construction job training and mentoring for at-risk youth, ex-offenders, and the homeless. Funding comes from home sales, private donations, and grants. The Wall Street Journal stated that Builders of Hope¿s first community, Barrington Village in southeast Raleigh, ¿might be the most politically correct housing development on the planet. Builders of Hope continues to redevelop neighborhoods in Raleigh, Fuquay-Varina, Durham, Cary, and Charlotte and now reaches beyond North Carolina to New Orleans and Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas. In Builders of Hope Wanda Urbanska chronicles the story of the organization, from inception to realization, while explaining exactly how the nonprofit works. Impressive before-and-after photographs and floor plans help show how Builders of Hope is different from other affordable housing organizations and how Nancy Welsh's original model of social entrepreneurism offers a timely, environmental, sustainable, and economic solution to rebuilding America. Published in celebration of Builders of Hope's five-year anniversary, proceeds from book sales will go toward funding the organization. Sustainability advocate Wanda Urbanska is the host-producer of Simple Living with Wanda Urbanska. The New York Times described Urbanska as "a spokeswoman for a phenomenon known as the simplicity movement," and O magazine called her "the de facto Martha Stewart of the voluntary simplicity movement." Wanda Urbanska is a graduate of Harvard University and has published widely in several national magazines and is the author of seven books, including Simple Living and Nothing's Too Small to Make a Difference. She is the "green and simple living" monthly blogger for the American Library Association's "@ your library" website. She makes her home in Raleigh, North Carolina. Nancy Welsh is the founder and CEO of Builders of Hope. She was recently selected by Governor Beverly Purdue to serve on the North Carolina Street Safe Task Force and has since been appointed as Chair of the Housing and Transportation subcommittee, a member of Urban Land Institute and the Homebuilders Association. A graduate of the University of Tennessee, Welsh worked in advertising and development for Coca-Cola and Leo Burnett before finding her life-calling in the affordable housing sector. Welsh lives in Raleigh, North Carolina.

I had to learn to understand it and muster the strength to fight it on a daily basis. I would get confused when Kartik would tell me that he is stuck. Stuck? I could not understand. Sometimes the medicine worked well and at other times I have seen him in immense pain. According to me, medicines should always work then why would they not? Every dosage he took, it was like fighting for his life because it takes forty-five minutes to one hour for the medicines to work, then the body cramps and slowly releases His strong will power helped him to overcome and fight against this cruel disease. I often wondered from where does he get the spirit and energy to keep pushing himself day after day. I realized that he keeps pushing himself because I was the driving force. I always asked myself a question, ‘If something happened to me, would Kartik leave me and the answer is, never’. He gives me so much respect, love and freedom. Life is NOT always full of roses. I chose to live with Kartik and walk by his side through this journey of life. LOVE, RESPECT, COMPROMISE AND UNDERSTANDING are the ‘Keys to the wonderful journey called marriage’. Arti Singh
