Book excerpt: Meena Sakwa: A Rebel Reloaded is a fictional political thriller, which presents hope to the reader despite gruesome wars, corruption and despair in Azimbra, a fictitious Country in Africa, which embodies all of the African political, economic and war saga. Meena Sakwa is thrust into revenge when government soldiers massacre civilians at Zotab Market. He is determined to join forces with rebels to overthrow the president. He is successful with the help of mercenaries. He shocks his generals and aspiring soldiers who anticipate working alongside him in the new government by announcing that he would not interfere with the democratic process by declining to run for the presidency and bans all his generals and commanders from participating in any electoral races. His mission is to transfer power peaceably without the threat of militarization. His generals and commanders are disappointed and resentful and have made it obvious in their attempts to get him out of the picture through countless efforts to have him killed. Meena is vigilant in his decision to take his beloved country into the realm of freedom. He faces new challenges when he tries to get funds to compensate his disgruntled soldiers. Meena Sakwa attempts to trace the late president's stolen money but all his funds are untraceable in overseas, western banks. He petitions the International Court to have the country's money returned. It is an uphill battle finding where these monies are stashed away. He soon realizes getting his hands on Azimbra's money may not be possible without insider help. Meena Sakwa takes on other challenges as head of the African Rebuilding Alliance Agency, as mediator between warring factions, investigator and advisor to presidents, and challenges African leaders to turn from corruption and self-conceitedness to becoming visionary leaders who are legacy-oriented. Filled with suspense, thrill, war casualties, and hope, this novel exposes the reader to the African political and economic saga.

Book excerpt: An astonishing trilogy of books, collected in one volume, documenting the tumultuous first half of the twentieth century in Spain 'One of the great autobiographies of the twentieth century' New Republic 'Moving and dramatic' New York Review of Books The Forging of a Rebel is an unsurpassed account of Spanish history and society from early in the twentieth century through the cataclysmic events of the Spanish Civil War. Arturo Barea's masterpiece charts the author's coming-of-age in a bruised and starkly unequal Spain. These three volumes recount in lively detail Barea's daily experience of his country as it pitched towards disaster: we are taken from his youthful play and rebellion on the streets of Madrid, to his apprenticeship in the business world and to the horrors he witnessed as part of the Spanish army in Morocco during the Rif War. The trilogy culminates in an indelible portrait of the Republican fight against Fascist forces, in which the Madrid of Barea's childhood becomes a shell and bullet-strewn warzone. Combining historical sweep and authority with poignant characterization and novelistic detail, The Forging of a Rebel is a towering literary and historical achievement. Arturo Barea (1897–1957) was born in Badajoz and raised and educated in Madrid. For most of the Spanish Civil War, he acted as head of the Foreign Press and Censorship Bureau of the Republican Government in Madrid and was also the radio broadcaster who spoke as the 'Unknown Voice of Madrid'. Eventually forced out of Spain, he sought temporary asylum in France before crossing to England just before the outbreak of World War II. He and his wife Ilsa settled in Eaton Hastings near Faringdon in Berkshire. From 1940 until 1957 he transmitted a weekly broadcast for Spanish Radio to South America known as Juan de Castilla. He published novels and short stories as well as books of criticism, including Lorca, the Poet (1944) and Unamuno (1952), and his great autobiographical trilogy The Forging of a Rebel first appeared in English between 1941 and 1946.

Book excerpt: In this thrilling sequel, Gemma continues to pursue her destiny to bind the magic of the Realms and restore it to the Order. Gemma and her friends from Spence use magical power to transport themselves on visits from their corseted world of Victorian London (at the height of the Christmas season), to the visionary country of the Realms, with its strange beauty and menace. There they search for the lost Temple, the key to Gemma's mission, and comfort Pippa, their friend who has been left behind in the Realms. After these visits they bring back magical power for a short time to use in their own world. Meanwhile, Gemma is torn between her attraction to the exotic Kartik, the messenger from the opposing forces of the Rakshana, and the handsome but clueless Simon, a young man of good family who is courting her. This is the second book in Libba Bray's engrossing trilogy, set in a time of strict morality and barely repressed sensuality, about a girl who saw another way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1994, almost one million ethnic Tutsis were killed in the genocide in Rwanda. In the aftermath of the genocide, some of the top-echelon Hutu officers who had organized it fled Rwanda to the eastern Congo (DRC) and set up a new base for military operation, with the goal of retaking power in Kigali, Rwanda. More than twenty years later, these rebel forces comprise a diverse group of refugees, rebel fighters, and civilian dependents who operate from mountain areas in the Congo forests and have a long and complex history of war and violence. While media and human rights reports typically portray this rebel group as one of the most brutal rebel factions operating in the eastern Congo region, Hutu Rebels paints a more complex picture. Having conducted ethnographic fieldwork in a rebel camp located deep in the Congo forest, Anna Hedlund explores the micropolitics and practices of everyday life among a community of Hutu rebel fighters and their families, living under the harshest of conditions. She describes the Hutu fighters not only as a military unit with a vision of return to Rwanda but also as a community engaged in the present Congo conflicts. Hedlund focuses on how fighters and their families perceive their own life conditions, how they remember and articulate the events of the genocide, and why they continue to fight in what appears to be an endless conflict. Hutu Rebels argues that we need to move beyond compiling catalogs of atrocities and start examining the "ordinary life" of combatants if we want to understand the ways in which violence is expressed in the context of a most brutal conflict.

Book excerpt: Already a young adult, Jesus devoted himself to the task of easing the health problems of his fellow men in Galilee, probably influenced by the Essenes. He was taught about the healing effects of plants and herbs, and thus the easing of the sufferings of people in the villages became his first mission, often accompanied by preaching on right and wrong, on the end of the world, and on how to prepare for the new kingdom. Gradually he earned for himself the name of prophet—one among many. He was born into a country occupied by the Roman Empire, a country whose Jewish population lived in degradation and poverty. In Galilee, where Jesus was born and where he lived most of his life, the occupation and the oppression, also by rich landowners in Jerusalem, caused social unrest and deep anger. More and more farmers lost their land, became homeless, or were forced to work as slaves on their own land. Rebellion smouldered. From time to time, rebellion leaders attacked the Romans, but they always ended up on the cross, a punishment reserved for political criminals. But the spirit of rebellion spread in Galilee. He too became a leader, Jesus, but his weapon was the word rather than the sword—a weapon often far superior to sharp metal. And as the preaching became ever more aggressive, and even political, Rome listened. His life was formed by the circumstances of his birth and by the social and political situation in the land of Galilee. Though basically unknown during his lifetime, by curious circumstances he became the spiritual focus of millions long after his death.
